I was the gardener at the hotel Russell was staying at, the Grand Millennium, up until the moment we had our first lockdown. I am genuinely thrilled to see the plants alive and relatively healthy, especially in that balcony area. Thanks for the unexpected moment of happiness Russell.

The very name strikes horror into my soul. On a ski trip many years ago ago with the kids; they were allowed one bag of lollies of choice for the trip down from Auckland. My 6 yr old boy saved his until the last minute and gobbled the lot as we reached the motel. We were sharing a bed. During the night, he reared up, burped, and puked up the whole lot on my head. Since then, I've had to avert my gaze when I pass them in the supermarket.

I was advised to shield last year - 3.5 months alone in a one-bed flat with no garden access and no family nearby. Weirdly I coped ok, mentally, at the time (as tough as it was). It’s now that I feel like I’m struggling, as I try to make sense of the fact that some people view having to wear a mask for a 20-minute bus journey as being an affront to their human rights. People suck. A fortnight in a hotel - with the ability to get out for 40-mins a day - would’ve been much preferred to my experience last year. On the plus side, though, I haven’t had covid and my friends and family are healthy so I’ve lots to celebrate. Not everyone is as fortunate. This pandemic has really shown people’s true colours. That’s another blessing, in a way.

Coping with isolation is a bit of an art form. I’ve had a chronic illness for 18 years. I was so bored when I first stopped working. Now I can kill time like a master 😂😂😂 Really the only difference in my life from the pandemic is that I stopped going to my doctor fortnightly and had calls instead. I go to him again now but less often. I still go to my chiro. It averages out to leaving the house once every 4 weeks. I’m fine with that. The part of it that I’m not fine with is the inner ugliness of people being displayed proudly. You are absolutely correct. People suck.

@@SamTheManWhoCanTwice ah yes, a very minor illness that kills 1 in 10 men it infects over the age of 70 in the US... more over not all can get vaccinated, including anyone undergoing cancer treatment, on immunosuppresses or have a compromised immune system so we can all just exclude them from society from now on... also being compounded by people refusing the vaccine... anti-maskers... misinformation... society is only as strong as it's dumbest link after all. I'm still having to shield. I've not seen anyone since Covid started apart from my wife & the nurse who's been to take blood 6 times. It's still not safe for me to meet other people. If I catch Covid, it's game over, so my GP & hospital consultant say I must stay at home (not difficult because I'm bed-bound) but I can't have visitors, which is the hard part. I've had both vaccinations & am due a booster, but the first 2 haven't worked because I have a very poor immune system. I'll be glad when it's all over.

But the initial flows of virus across the US borders were south to infect Mexico, and I imagine north to infect Canada. The US infection sources are known from DNA tracing. It was heavily from Europe especially Italy. Not much from China, which was targeted by the non-citizen ban at the same time as NZ did it. The US initial response was astoundingly anti-managed. I would like to agree but we’ve developed quite a qlutch of Qurious people out being angry and threatening violence. We had more than our share of white supremacists and incels, about 1.5% but now they’ve gathered in all the pandemic’s fearful and confused people, persuading them that immigrants and China-owned commie government and media are all lying to (that part’s never really clear.). Still under 10% but there are pockets of kookery where scarcely half the people have had a shot. Since the national rate for all eligible people is about 82%, you can see these outliers are quite far out from most places. Unfortunately, the prairie provinces are run by stubborn white guy conservatives who did the trumpy thing so people there are in trouble and the rest of us have to hope they just stay where they are until the hospitals can let in cancer patients who need tumours removed and other “optional care”
