Point of order: we DID get the e-Reader and these level cards in North America, but not ALL of them. Nearly half never left Japan, making the Wii U release the first legal chance we had to play many of these levels as well.

When I was a kid I grew up in Canada. The neighbour across the road had a father who worked in Japan. I played Super Mario Bros 3 at his house for the first time in the summer of 87' which sounds crazy considering the game didn't even come out in Japan until October. However the reason I am leaving this comment is because the first level of Super Mario Bros 3 was different. The level was the same, only you started on a tall platform and had to jump off it. I remember my friend and I trying to get back up there jumping but couldn't. Crazy right? When I got my copy in the summer of 88' the game was like it was today and I never understood why his was different. I've tried for years to find them online and ask but no success. This video made me think of it.

Unfortunately, we here in the U.S. and Canada didn't get all the cards. The most we got were either half of what Japan got or just a handful for the various titles that took advantage of the e-reader.

I completely forgot about these. When I initially clicked on the video, I thought it was going to be about one of the two NES ROM hacks that contained levels not seen in the cartridge release. One that I know will come up in a search is called "Mario Adventure." I only had the first series of cards, so I missed out on a bunch of content.

I never knew about this even back then when I worked and ran Game Stop and now I HAVE to replay this masterpiece as a whole because that means none of us had ever truly beaten SMB3 because we did not play these super secret levels that were locked away! Let the fun begin this weekend tomorrow! I hope everyone here smashes that "LIKE" button and gives our lovely Lady a high five for being super sweet, super awesome, and super entertaining for teaching us something new each and every episode! Funny. I am from Dominican Republic, and I got a GBA SP with a copy of the game that surprisingly had the e-Reader compatibility. I just remember how confusing it used to be for me to see that weird "e-World" and not know what it was all about. Surely as you can imagine, e-Reader cards were never for sale in my own country either so that's that.

I kinda completely FORGOT that the GBA e-Reader EXISTED (with the cards that unlocked stuff in certain GBA games). Really sucks, too, because it makes these games essentially have “sectioned-off” content that you can’t access unless you can get ahold of the actual cards (which I’m sure aren’t easy to find or cheap) or are able to hack into the software itself.
@benjaminvlz

What I find more interesting than these levels, the original SMB 3 for NES has 15 unused levels that are in the game's code and inaccessible through normal means, but can be accessed with Game Genie codes. Some of the levels appear to be earlier, unfinished versions of levels, while others are unique.

It's funny that they added so many new features to the game that ended up not being seen by most. With all of these things and the amount of levels mixing things up they could have essentially made a Super Mario 3.5 with 4 of it's own worlds and story. I also believe the shoe is the most underused item in Mario 3 so I'm glad to see that it got some more usage in the extra levels.

I was fortunate that the e-Reader was released just after my birthday and got the thing with my birthday money. Originally that Christmas they had released the first of three waves of the e-reader levels. They were fun and cool. It was also neat that the e-reader had released power up cards. With those you could use the hammer suit anywhere in the game. Like my cousin did in World 2...... Sadly I was supremely disappointed they never released the remaining cards. I read though I think in 2007 some guy from another country downloaded them on his computer and used a laser print to print them out and have them work in his eReader. But I couldn't get that here. Finally in 2017 the Nintendo WiiU shop released the game with all the extra levels and I played them thoroughly enjoying thrm.

I felt obligated to provide a correction but these new levels were not locked on the cartridge. The thing is they were never on the cartridge to begin with! The e-reader levels are essentially DLC on a physical cards. The dot codes on the cards are actual code containing the new level structure. Really, the only thing on the cartridge having to do with the e-reader levels are the new assets taken from previous games in the Mario Advance series so that they would be at the ready for when a level got scanned in. Hell, there are some assets at the ready for the e-reader levels that just never got used but can be if someone were to create a dot code card with the correct code on it to put said asset into a custom level. The last thing I can mention is the version of the GBA game on Wii U and Switch is actually modified a bit. Normally the cartridge could save 32 e-reader levels before having to delete some to add more room for new levels. This was modified for Wii U and Switch so all the levels that were ever created could be included.

The main selling point for me to get an eReader was to play the classic NES games that at the time were not available anywhere else outside of hunting down the cartridges. I did get the Super Mario 3 card packs that were available, but with one GBA, how would I use them? Then I got the Game Boy Player and the link cable to connect my GBA to the GameCube. That worked.
