My favorite German phrase when it comes to „locker“ is „Immer locker durch die Hose atmen“ which translates to „breath relaxed through your pants“ and is used in the sense of you need to stay calm or should calm down. 😊

Locker seems to have a cognate in Afrikaans and Dutch which is the very popular Lekker with the identical meaning of (cool, pleasant, fantastic) learning little things like that is super satisfying to me, thanks Svenja! ☺️ (This is a classic example of a "false friend" in linguistics when you consider the meaning of locker in English)

Hi Trixi, I'm glad to see you are back to posting. I have a request, my grandmother use to make sauerkraut and spareribs with a miniature dumpling, which she referred to as spaetzlits. I have searched my German dictionary and the internet to no avail. She said she spoke low German as a child (c. 1890s), and my German teacher (1970) said that the way I pronounce Ich is low German. So my question, is spaetzlits the same as spaetzle? Is it a regional pronunciation? Or is it a completely different dumpling?

The German case system and declensions. I find it so weird and fascinating how Germans are able to mix up / jumble different slots of a sentence and the sentence still means the same thing . the thing with prepositions mostly depends on the ending of the following word. For Example: Words ending with -ie (like Demokratie, Anarchie, Idiotie) are mostly feminim. An idea for those learning on their knees with no fortune of being successful through financial commitments, the scenery of location and the name of those common furnish names that are at the location. For example the cinema, the fair, the swimming pool or the shopping markets. You could also write a book and have an online publisher make so many copies at a decent price at some exceptional standards, hardback, softback...That sort of thing. I just have one remark: please allow us a bit more time to read the captions when you speak German! Having the brain switch from hearing English, then to hear German, but look for the text of the German to try to understand what we just heard (when we're not fluent), and then read the English translation, and then try to connect it back to German, is really kinda hard.

Here's an idea for a episode topic, what are the names of different music genres in German? For example, I know what Schlager is, but there are subtypes within it such as Partyschlager, Volksmusic, Kultschlager, & Kuschelschlager. Sometimes the meaning is not what you might expect; for me "folk music" includes people like Joan Baez and the Kingston Trio, or in German someone like Klaus Hoffmann, but Volksmusic seems very different. I think there is a, perhaps not completely undeserved, stereotype of German popular music using lots of accordion, an instrument that's been out of fashion in the U.S. for half a century; perhaps you can dispel that stereotype a bit. Partly I'm interested because I want to know more about what types of German music exist. German radio stations are a good way to practice German listening skills. Aber Heino möchte ich nicht die ganze Zeit zuhören müssen.

i would argue that Volksmusik is not part of the Schlager music family. Volkstümliche Musik on the other hand is. Volksmusik is traditional music, volkstümliche music is Schlager using instruments and elements of traditional music in Schlagermusik form. There are german musicians that make other genres of music you could listen to, like die Ärzte, Rammstein, JBO... But they can (due to the speed) be less easy to understand for non native speakers than Schlagermusik. Of the 3 J.B.O. are the most versatile i think, as they for the most part parody famous songs with somewhat funny german texts. I would however recommend EAV for their sheer amount of songs over the last almost 50 years (not just out of patriotic reasons) but sometimes there are austrian slang words withing the lyrics. Just for a little taste: A song about the intention to change ones life in pretty good high german, as this concert was in munich: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y4rRcqaol5t7ftk Or the Banküberfall song form the 80's: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qIm4naCGarKppKc If yo not already guessed it: Palmers is a lingerie company, Puffn (for english antive speakers it sounds like Poofn) is the slang word for a gun. "Marie" is a slang word for money. (They did sing it in english too, but the lyrics are not the same)

@@nirfz Thanks. I've noticed that regional dialect (I'd hesitate to call is slang) often appears in music videos. It can be a challenge to look up the words since they're often not covered in dictionaries, but I don't see why dialect should be less "German" than "Standard German". There are quite a few songs that have both English and German versions, and yes they do change the lyrics completely. One that comes to mind right away is ""Ich bin von Kopf bis Fuß auf Liebe eingestellt"/"Falling in love again" Then there's Connie Francis' "Everybody's Somebody's Fool" which became "Die Liebe ist ein seltsames Spiel" in German. There's also Bobby Vinton's "My Melody of Love", which was adapted into English and Polish from "Herzen Haben Keine Fenster". Until the '60's many pop songs were translated into German for the European market. The Beatles have two songs released in German, but apparently after that they'd had enough and decided that you either listen with the original lyrics or not at all. I don't think many artists had the clout to do that at the time, but once they did it the custom of translating pop songs into other languages became the exception instead of the rule. Kraftwerk often compromised by doing lyrics in both English and German, and sometimes other languages, in the same song.

Another song well known in both German and English is "Die Moritat von Mackie Messer"/"Mack the Knife". Brecht's recording, with its heavily trilled 'r's, sounds unusual to American ears, but apparently, given the time, place and subject matter it was the expected style. The song is from an opera so the lyrics are actually not that different in the two languages.

Sadly the Banküberfall video you linked is (in my view) missing the flair of the original musicvideo they made in the 80's and while the lyrics are the same, the music has changed a bit. With the dialect/slang: yes it's not less german in a general outside look, but it's less "german german". Most non native speakers have a hard enough time with standard high german. Sometimes we austrians get mocked by germans that what we speak shouldn't be considered german. :-D

I like to guess new vocabulary meanings before looking them up. For example, it took me only a handful of times hearing “Grund” before I correctly guessed it meant a reason or a purpose. “Genug” took me much longer. When my brain finally honed in on it meaning sufficient or enough, I properly slapped my forehead. “Locker”!.. (pause for exasperated sigh and eye rolling).. Locker.. Trixi.. that word has been sitting in my brain’s guess basket for MONTHS. A few times I’ve said to myself, “Oh, just get the bloody dictionary and look it up already!” My only guess was that it must mean “cool” or “flatulent” or “sensitive”.
