im a 33 year master auto tech and watching the pressure you use to pick these locks terrifies me to the point where im pretty sure i cant ever do what you can. i work with fine objects and i know what bends and binds metal or destroys precision tools. youre a legend 👍
@Lilith-Rose

I remember Bosnian bill once making a remark about lpls gorilla grip style of picking being very unusual but highly effective. He must have a really good feel for things to be able to exert such pressure without destroying tools and still being able to feel for counter rotation etc. I'm a hobbyist jeweller and restorer (focusing mainly on old tools) so I also know the struggle of riding that knife edge between just enough and too much force
@herseem
@herseem Жыл бұрын
I know that of which you speak. As someone who has been fixing things since I was very young, I understand the relationship between force and success or damage very well. I took my sons to an escape room and the one thing that prevented us getting further was a lock for which I was sure we had the right key, but I was certain that putting more force than I was prepared to put on it would have bent or broken the key. Sure enough, it was the 'correct' key, but the amount of force the operator showed us that was required to open the lock was probably why it was bent already.
@Fyrefrye

@@Lilith-Rose I don't remember the video, but there was a colab that LPL did a while back and the others involved tried to pick a lock or two. He told them he could tell they were struggling or doing something wrong by the color of their knuckles or something like that. It might look like he's using a ton of force, but his control and knowledge of what's going on inside those locks is *stunning*
@Lilith-Rose
@Lilith-Rose Жыл бұрын
@@Fyrefrye yes that's actually something I pay attention to myself when watching him pick, your skin whites out under pressure because the blood that gives it a pinkish colour is squeezed out of the capillaries (there's good first aid technique for checking if blood flow is restricted to a limb or a patient has drastically lowered blood pressure which can indicate internal bleeding, called the capillary refill test, which works because of this phenomenon). The more force the larger the area of whiteness around the pressure point

I hear you. Growing up the phrase "Locks are there to stop the opportunist, not the determined" was said a lot. Since in the real world most theft is done quickly to avoid being caught or even seen if possible, even a mediocre lock can be enough to convince them to move on to another target. The local signs now say "lock your doors AND hide your valuables" in public parking areas for that reason.

I’m here because I’m always looking for topics I know nothing about. I like practical things in my “old” age. But I’m a little concerned at how many followers you have! Of course, your audio is clear and so is the rest of your presentation. So not surprised. Thanks for making a good channel.

"There's no denying that the company is making far more effort than most." Give that Toledo engineer a solid bonus. That is almost a wedding request from LPL... :)

High praise from LPL. I'm impressed by their level of quality and though in the design of this lock.

You can send them, but I believe his policy is that he doesn't eat anything that someone sent him, which is sensible IMO.

And yet more proof that yes, you _can_ make a buck off selling locks with half-decent security measures in the cylinder for less than 20 bucks! And it comes in snazzy colours, too! Heck, even if someone does break the lock via a snip or twist, you can still get that cylinder out and use it for something else, like as a practice lock or just stick it into a somewhat more heavy-duty body for your next bike. Also, a proper taking apart & examining the pins video! I feel like we haven't had a lock worthy of one of those in ages!

I Always like to see a full teardown with your thoughts- not only is it more interesting, but it makes it easier to learn what one may be doing right; or wrong. Also it's nice to see what makes the lock click.

You know, this gets me thinking. A lock like this doesn’t look much harder to manufacture. Master Lock is a huge company and they can’t make something like this? It seems so simple and shows a little thought goes a long way. My impression of this is that most lock companies really just don’t care. Great video!

I was actually thinking of replacing my gate lock (a Master lock similar to this one). So glad I found this vid. I've been following for years but haven't watched any LPL vids this year.

Now that's a lock I'd be comfortable using for a garage or barn door. Good enough deter the casual thief and cheap enough to replace if you lose the keys.

That would be a perfect lock for the type of inset padlocks many big toolboxes use in construction.

LPL, I love your videos. Short and sweet and packed full of information. Might I suggest an "extras" channel for a more in depth look at what could be added (or removed) from certain locks to make them better and then the effect those changes would have.

Not bad. Indeed, I was surprised LPL used his special device instead of his usual freehand picking method.
