You dont edit out your errors, and some of your slightly sarcastic comments are hilarious. Thanks Charlie for producing worthy interesting videos. Martin.

Good job on the repair, like your layout and engines. We are of an age, the Westerns, Warships, Hymeks and Brushes were all standard fare for me at age 12. I used to spend an hour at Reading station most evenings, on my way home from school, crossing off train numbers in my Ian Allan Diesel Locomotives booklets. I still have them, I am looking through them now. Brings back great memories, love the sounds of those engines. Thanks for the Memories, Cheers, Kevin.

I loved the HST and the Leyland National. Although for the period I intend to model the buses will be Leyland Tiger Cubs and Bristol LS as standard fare, and the trains Webb Coal Tank, Super D and 0-6-0 PT

Excellent tutorial. I have the EM1 which decided to jump the track and land on the floor! Bogie hanging off etc. Went to work on it and the gear tower and shaft were adrift. One end of a cardan shaft had one of the (notches?) broken off. Shoved it back in with just the other side doing all the work. I guess it will break eventually. Had a Bachmann 10000 plastic shaft collar slip in the brass motor weight and glued that. I have about 40 Heljans and dreading this. Currently got a sick railbus awaiting re assembly after blowing a motor ( available from Lendons who also did a gear pull swap on it). The nylon gears on these tend to split causing the inevitable. More brass is needed in these parts.

Another grand master class in hands on repair! Charlie, I'm constantly amazed at all the tasks at which you excel! You can do absolutely everything! But seriously, isn't that what we all as model railroaders need to be able to do? I've found often all that is needed for me to take on a challenge is to see someone do it. Then, we're back to Charlie Bishop showing us how! Thanks, Charlie, for the great lesson! I'm now off to take on that GP 30 that only moves one end!

Excellent again Charlie I must admit I do like Heljan but am a bit disappointed with similar problems With arthritis I can't do fiddly work as demonstrated in your latest video. My Western had done very little work and failed in a similar fashion but I had it stored For quite a while and could not claim for any warranty. My Hymek is now doing silly Things. Luckily I have supported My local hobby shop for years and they are very supportive And repair at very reasonable rates. I do think for money spent it is disappointing to have Common issues That are obviously quality related in their locomotives.. I have had very good experiences with Bachmann and Hornby and must admit I May Hesitate to go Heljan again as much as I do like their appearance. Thanks for another excellent presentation and I do know now my Heljans are put Together. Regards Howard

Hi Charlie another great video. May I offer an "old school" tip regarding the cracked plastic drive end. Whilst gluing it to the brass shaft is fine another method is to use a piece of brass tube, with a diameter that is a close push fit over the collared (bogie end) of the piece, and cut a small length of the brass to fit over the cracked collar. A little glue to secure the brass over the plastic and it should last forever! The brass acts as a strong compression fit over the plastic. I had to use a similar method on an aircon unit vane which had a brass drive bush driving a plastic connection. The plastic, of course, was forever cracking! A small length of brass collar and it has lasted for a decade. Have a great weekend.

An interesting option Pat, many thanks, Charlie.
@Steve.M

I was going to suggest something similar too. I’ve had success recently with tiny 3D printed collars to reinforce or repair push-fit plastic parts. You can tune the fit quite precisely, add a chamfer to help it go on, and there seems to be just enough spring to hold really tight, usually without glue.
@aeroearth
@aeroearth 3 жыл бұрын
To prevent the plastic hub splitting again you could try wrapping a small piece of carbon tow around the boss. Tie a knot in the tow then whilst holding the knot tight with your third hand apply the cyanoacrylic resin to the tow. It will wick in and cure. If very thin cyanoacrylic resin, the cure will be about 2 seconds. Excess resin can be mopped up with paper towel. Cyanoacrylic resins set by curing by reacting with water molecules on the surface, they do not set by solvent evaporation. For the thicker cyanoacrylic resins there are accelerators that you can buy which will force fast curing. An Ophthalmic surgeon told me once that whenever he had to remove cyanoacrylic resin from eyes it always caused scarring of the cornea, so I ALWAYS wear glasses when working with those resins.

Nice one Charlie very well explained, didn't know it was a common problem (read as design flaw). Learnt the hard way, my Hymek on testing by supplier in UK to here the cardan shaft had detached on one end and the top bogie clip on the opposite bogie had come off; result loco sat there stationary wurring away - seems prone to vibration and transport shock. Had to add plasti - card shields to both ends to stop the light bleed from the route code at the gap body to chassis, ditto on my Heljan class 26 - another irritating design flaw!! Best regards and happy repairing Stephen

Wow Charlie, what can I say ! Perhaps I should start by saying that I enjoy all of your videos and they’re all helpful in one way or another. But this one, just excellent ! I’ve got many Heljan (yes pronounced Hellyan because it’s a Danish word - I can assure you I’m as far from upper class as you can get 🤣) locomotives, quite a few have never been run but have been bought second hand from EBay. One such loco is the prototype Deltic, a beautiful model, but it makes a squealing noise which slows it down. I suspect one of the bosses or maybe the worm gear is dry and needs lubricating. I’ve been putting it off but know eventually I’d have to do something about it. Your video has just given me, not just the confidence to do so, but the knowledge of what to expect and the methodology of how to do it. A fantastic video Charlie full of very practical help and advice. Great job ! P.S. I’ve also got a Falcon loco in the pale Green livery that I love. Not that I remember it in real life, but I always though it was a very nice looking loco.

Hi Charlie, another interesting video, Heljan certainly don't have the monopoly on this issue, I've seen it on Bachmann and Hornby locomotives. Good to see that you take great care in realigning all the items of the drive chain and checking for trapped wires. You also tested drive to both bogies. I also check each pickup set is working while testing as I've had the odd wire disconnect during reassembly due to the excessive movement/flexing of the wiring. Regards, David.

Same problem split couplings on bogies. I made a brass collar that was a shrink fit over the couplings and used Loctite bearing fit to fit the plastic to the shaft. I also replaced the the Heljan slot car motor with a Mashima motor. With that Zimo decoder those blue and grey wires for the stay alive capacitor I would fit a bit shrink wrap over the ends as if you haven't disabled the stay alive feature those wires are live.

Common issue on the Heljan 47s too. Make sure when taking bogie apart that the wheels go back right way round to avoid shorting the electrics. 15:57 the centre wheel is wrong way round for example.

Good video Charlie. I've repaired a number of these joints on Ozzi made locos. Unfortunately it is a little too common a problem. It always seem the favourite loco is the victim! But the worst is a split gear, now that is a challenge., especially tracking down a replacement part!

A good job, well done. You have to wonder how they come up with the designs for the drive mechanisms in model locos: so many different ways to connect the motor to the wheels! Regarding the three connectors at each end, I think a small dot of three different colour paint on each of the three male and female connectors would make reconnecting it all a bit simpler - a bit like the Xs scribed on the motor and chassis. I wonder if there's an issue with the plastic Heljan use that's a bit too brittle. You'd sort of hope it would need a heck of a lot of force to crack those whatever-they're-calleds. Maybe the other takeaway from this is don't make your Heljan locos struggle too hard.

Charlie, since not everyone has your success with cleaning oily metalwork and then super-gluing the bits back together. Might I recommend either A43 Threadlock or A70 Studlock, both of which are oil-tolerant, and so not so sensitive to residual oil.

I think that you can get the tail lights to turn on/off independently of the headlights by plugging the tail lights into one of the accessory sockets on the PCB - that certainly works with the Heljan 00 gauge class 15. You may find that preferable to having the head lights permanently disabled on one side.

Thank you for another excellent video. I think if I had paid serious money for such a model I would have been most disappointed on opening this one up to find the nasty plastic mechanics. I can't imagine Binns Road ever thinking this was a satisfactory way to build a drive chain. Plastic universal joints just pressed onto plated/polished shafts is no way to ensure any kind of longevity or proper transfer of power, on yours now entirely reliant on a drop of superglue. It's the sort of arrangement you find in a Christmas cracker toy. Not a single screw to hold anything together, just feeble plastic clips that in time will break off. It looks as if Heljan have gone for lots of nice detail on the outside, and nothing on the inside (what the eye don't see......)

Interesting video Charlie. On the subject of the disconnected tail light, is there a spare output on the decoder that can be connected and you can simply set the output on when you want the tail lights on. I know it’s manual faff but if you are making a video you will have at least the lights on when you want them on. I noticed it was a sound decoder and looked like an ESU, unlike most general 8 pin where you have a floating violet wire which would be another function. Regards, Geoff.
