It's actually pretty crazy how much has been accomplished here, dude lived in a tent all winter and continued building and has now almost completed an entire cabin while living out of said tent. And he also did EVERYTHING himself. Crazy amount of dedication.

He's a strong and healthy young man that had a good training and took some opportunities well early on, so that he could gain some capital to invest in his own vision at the right time. He has also read a lot of good quality literature.

Hint: When using screws or nails on a horizontal surface (walls, etc.) try to angle the screw or nail slightly upwards from horizontal. This will leave any entry hole created by the screw or nail angled downward slightly and allow any water that might get in to drain out and down the surface rather than sitting in the hole and eventually rotting out around the screw or nail.

Hi James, just a suggestion for water run off on the bottom of your window "cladding". Put a small groove along its entire length and it will prevent water from creeping back to the wall via capillary action. It provides a "drip" point. If you look at stone/concrete window sills, they have a small relief cut along the bottom for this purpose. Place is looking great! All the best from over in the Bruce Peninsula, ON

The method for installing "old timey" flashing was to cut a groove and insert the metal edge into the groove. For the flashing you installed above your windows, cut a straight groove at the desired height about 1/2" -3/4" deep across the top (use your circ saw). It doesn't matter if the log is not flat as long as the the shallowest point is greater than 1/4" deep. Bend your flashing at a point that is slightly deeper than the slot, caulk the slot and insert metal into the caulked groove. Secure with 2-3 small screws (1" #8 or a little longer ) straight into the groove to pinch the sheet metal into the groove and then caulk the top. Gives you a water tight drip and a very clean aesthetic.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest, I think it was called a ragglin joint. Was taught this many years ago by a older coworker that was the best metal roofing guy I ever met. I spendt 25+ years in construction as a carpenter.

@Building_the_SHACK 7 күн бұрын
You've got a good memory @R_B62. Typically used in masonry but equally effective in wood it's called a REGLET joint. There isn't a more bullet proof way to install flashing that lasts a long time and is aesthetically pleasing. I'm also getting into "old timer" territory so remember with pride the execution of good techniques.

Greetings from the land of Thor and Odin! While I haven’t read all the comments, I have some advise on the use of sprayfoam and adhesives vs oakum. Use oakum wherever you can. If moisture gets in through it or around it, it will dry again. Plastics and foam will deteriorate over time an eventually let water in and then it will be trapped and not dry. Oakum is also waaay better for nature. If the Vikings could cross the ocean from Norway to Newfoundland without any plastic in their boats, you can build a cabin without it too - and you are doing great!

Hey James! Love your videos! I think you should consider redoing your door so it swings inside instead of outside. The two benefits are in winter when you have a big snowfall, you’ll be trapped in the cabin and also, right now the hinges are on the outside, so anyone can enter the cabin by simply removing the hinge pins. Keep up the great work!

Good morning James, you asked about a better scribe. There’s a tool similar to a child’s pinboard called a contour gauge that’s made to help with difficult cuts. It’s essentially small slats that you push against the thing you want to cut and it gives you a perfect pattern. When you were cutting that small piece with your sawzall, I kept thinking, he needs a jigsaw! And then you bought one. Love the changing colors on your trees. The tree with the red berries, I believe they make white flowers in the spring. We had these in Anchorage and here in Utah as ornamental trees. I’ve seen them in the city. You can mark the changing of the seasons with these trees. I’m glad you’re putting up security cameras. There’s nothing wrong with a neighborhood watch to ensure safety even if it’s the 4 legged vs the 2 legged variety. Looking forward to what’s next. I watched a bushcraft channel with a guy from Siberia. He made a tool shed out of live edge overlapping lumber. It was cool looking. A different technique from his cabin. Whatever you do, it will be great to see.

The 🐻 would have made me reevaluate my entire life! 😳😬 Your bravery is ever-impressive, Sir James! I agree with strapping bear spray EVERYWHERE - I have a similar strategy in my home. Weapons and laser-guided sprays hidden, literally, EVERYWHERE! You might also consider strapping a handgun to your chest.. the spray may not be enough, especially in a worst-case with multiple threats of whichever species. On a lighter note (pun intended), the shower singing brings me ALL OF THE JOY!!! 🚿🎶🥰 Please don't ever stop!! I will share the berries and cherries fertility method far and wide! It may very well slow down some of the procreation of the less-intelligent breed!😆 Loving the progress on the cabin as well as your continued humility in the learning-as-you-go process! Hi James, The timber profile you have cut for the side of the window so far will not work for long, due to the profile points cut into the oakham restricting the shrinkage of the timber logs and when this happens the logs move down and the window moving upwards. When this happens the timber will be pulled away from the window.

Also I think the top could have just been shimmed to make an incline, didn't need to drill it into the log as the overhang is covering it anyway, so I reckon just an inch incline would have done it. He could've cut the metal so the step down is in the middle too which would have ensured no snow build up. I do worry about all the holes he's putting into pretty integral parts of the cabin. Should probably go around and fill all the random holes with sealant.

James I keep telling you it’s time to move into the cabin. The bears are getting ready for winter eating everything they can. That bear was a beauty, it looked nice and healthy.

The best part of my week is your channel, and the channels 'Cabin River Outdoors', and 'Gettin' Off Grid'. I love watching industrious hard working individuals forging their way in the wild. Great work- Your cabin is looking amazing! did you test those frames out to ensure that your windows. will still open with those frames in place? You'll need to make sure you still have fully opening windows. Also, was thinking that, in addition to your bear spray, you may want to invest in some bear bangers and/or ab air horn. Don't want those bears to get too used to walking through your immediate camp. That's future trouble right there.

I firmly believe in your hypothesis about homesteading, farming and living off the land. It is hard work, but I feel humans were meant to do these things. It gives a daily sense of purpose, something tangible you can be proud of. Also the fact the winters months were for going inward, reflecting, tending to the home and spending time with your family. Lack of purpose is really hurting people now. Humans just can’t mentally/spiritually/physically keep up with the tech we have created. Still jealous of all your Rowan berries! Enjoy them this winter by making Rowan berry jam/jelly.

I had a hard time getting up this morning but then I remembered it's "Wolf Milk" time and I hustled to get the dog out, coffee and smokes. Excellent job on the windows. Nice and tight. Already anxiously waiting for the next episode! Made me laugh with the Berries and Cherries comment! 😂 you got so much done, be proud of your work.

Look forward to your videos every Saturday and I must say they are never a disappointment! Cabin coming along nicely. Can't believe the big black bear you had come into your camp to check you out and give his seal of approval on your build. 😂 Sorry to hear about your neighbor and the attack by local dogs! Yikes that is worrisome. From what I have seen with other KZbinr homestead builders, the security cameras are a very good idea as is your safety and security pact with your neighbors. Hope you never have to enact it but sadly these days you just never know. Keep up the good work and looking forward to next weeks build! Strength and Honour!! Ooga Booga!! 👍😎👍

Great work, as usual. One consideration. Try a hand-held electric plane to even out the logs around the windows to assist with attaching the trim work. Lots of other uses for a plane too, as you consider your build.

For someone that working an office to building a home with minimal tools is inspiring but also frightening as to how much bloody hard work it is. You can see why houses cost so much, the effort it requires and doing it by yourself is rather spiritual imho. Enjoying the videos. Thanks

I'm glad that you added some more bracing to the gables, I noticed it shook when the chinking/daubing was hammered in. If you do end up hunting a turkey, I'd personally prefer if the cleaning of the carcass wasn't shown on camera. I don't have any functional suggestions for the window, but for aesthetics I would have cut the vertical pieces that conform to the logs first (the ones you spray foamed behind, I believe you called them scribed endcaps), cut them a bit smaller (so they stick out from the wall less), and then mount the trim on that to hide the seam. (I hope that makes sense) I love the progress on sealing the cabin, I can't wait to see you move in!

We ended up cutting grooves in the logs to accommodate the Sheetrock or frame boards to slide as the logs shrank🤷‍♀️just an idea you may want to think of. We expected our green logs to shrink a half inch per 12”. Anyway just a note before the next windows😊much love for your vids

Regarding window frame-out suggestions you requested; I’d use pressure treated 2x’s. You could use cedar too (liked you did for scribed ends), but 2x expensive; pressure treated not much more $$ at all. Even stained or painted, regular pine will rot sooner or later. Awesome job … as always, wife and I love your channel!

Hey James. There are adjustable "contour" or "scribing" tools that will conform to any angle or round situation. Exactly what you need. The ones I saw were 5" or 10"; You just unlock it, push it against any object you need to get the contour and then lock it and go scribe it on whatever you need to. Once you find them online you will see the process to use it and how easy it is to use. The ones I saw were $7- $36. ' '

At 17:30 how about dill a hole through the middle of both, connect the two pieces with a 12” spike. Bond it with some type of glue and plug the end with a dowel. That would be more aesthetically pleasing

It's just a ges but I think your Crow might have been drunk, berries can over ripen on the vine and I've seen drunk birds before hanging out on the vines. Hey there hey bear. The hitch on your meal can easily be disassembled and stuck underneath the mill or hide it somewhere so nobody can take off with it.

Sir James, for your "ridge beam" log with the metal brackets, if you don't like the look of the metal gussets you used to extend the ridge pole, you could cut the timber flush with the gable end and add another log from the gable to the fascia with no seems, this would give the illusion the ridge pole is full length. And from a structural standpoint that part of the pole is not needed as your 2x10 ridge above will pick up that one rafter (the fascia). Just thought it may be more esthetically pleasing. Also for scribing we use a compass with a built in pencil, very cheap and effective (20 year builder/carpenter).
