Everyone complaining about the virtual instruments doesnt see the workflow utility of it; pros can still use it as a temporary stand in to fill out other parts until youre ready to record the full thing. Been doing that with the drummer for years: lay down something simple while i track to help give me the feel/groove and stay on beat, then when its ready to map drums or record them, do it then.

Hey Chris, at 39:09 the new bounce feature is awesome! Bouncing Synths when wanting to use Midi was an extra pain, and this now solves it! But, a lot of times I want to perform a filter sweep, or some kind of pitch bend or modulation when bouncing to audio. The fact that it brings the volume down of the focus track and solos it, makes it not so fun or musical to do this kind of thing. Anyway to stop that behavior that you know of?

That said I will no doubt update to Logic 11 just for the Chord bar and streamlined external instrument routing!

This is great! Thank you for giving us such a thorough explanation of these new features. I have to say though, for myself, I liked the old drummer better. The new session drummer, I find harder to control and it's a lot easier to just play directly into a midi drummer for the purpose of a temporary placeholder to be tweaked later. As for the "session" bassist and piano, they may be a good start for initiates but if you are a seasoned musician you can get better results playing the parts yourself, even if you have to do a lot of editing or quantizing. IMHO Although, I have to add that the articulations of bassists is a nice touch. (pun intended!) Meanwhile, the best thing in 11.01 is probably ChromaGlow! What a great feature! I may have to re-do some of my mixes now lol . . .

The drums themselves are the same, but it looks like they may have been mixed differently (which of course can be changed). I was playing around with the retro rock producer kit this afternoon to see what they did. It was interesting to see how the stock plugins were used in a way I don’t usually approach drums. Chromaglow definitely is used on the drum presets now. The only thing i changed was using little labs ibp on each producer kit channel to do some phase adjusting, and there was an improvement to my ears. Subtle, but definitely an improvement.

Drummer Ghost Notes: I noticed that those 16th-note ghost notes (that “slow down” the groove of a straight-8th-notes beat) can be eliminated by turning Ghost Notes to zero (7:35). So many computer-generated drum patterns want to add those ghost notes for some reason. This control may not be brand new to Logic Pro 11 Drummer, but it is a good thing. It means overplaying Drummer-track drummers can be reined in (otherwise, you’d need to convert the track to MIDI and weed those 16th notes out manually.)

Thanks for this VERY informative video. I'm still a relative newcomer to Logic Pro (and DAW's in general) so please excuse me if I'm asking a question with an obvious answer. But I just wanted to confirm that by finally enabling internal routing of MIDI between tracks, one can now EASILY record the MIDI output of chord generators like Scaler 2 or arpeggiated rhythm generators like Native Instruments' Session Percussionist, rather than just record the simple trigger notes, correct? My understanding is that up until now, the only way to accomplish this was by resorting to using Logic's IAC, environment and/or MIDI stacking capabilities. But doing that was a fairly complex and cumbersome workaround and - from what I've read - prone to instability. So correct me if I'm wrong, but with this new internal MIDI routing now built in, recording the 'true' output of such VST's should be significantly easier to accomplish, as it has been in other DAWs like Ableton and Cubase? I wanted to be doubly sure, as I have actually been tempted to switch to one of those competitive programs because of the lack of this built-in capability in Logic.

Except no one has any control over what those do. So they are essentially just sample makers, they can’t actually be guided or directed at all. All you can do is keep rephrasing what you want and realistically it only has so many samples it even learned from. This is a way to “orchestrate” the entire composition and every single note and beat. Combing the two strategies is the actual future, where its fully human driven, and still actually accomplishing the goals of the human artist.

Logic 11 gives the option of converting the existing Logic X track to MIDI or translating it into a new '11-style' Drummer track. However, note that the Drumkit will have changed to one of the revised kits for both the MIDI and Drummer tracks, so if there are 'tweaks' in the Logic X kit, they won't be retained in the new versions of the track. I recommend 'bipping' the Logic X Drummer track before opening in Logic 11.
