In this video I explore the idea of creating custom Mid/Side Instruments by layering two software instruments Left and Right, and converting to Mid/Side with the Direction Mixer. Like I say in the video, it's not that one version is better than the other, it's just a way to change the overall texture and "space" of layered instruments. You can also try playing with different effects on the different instrument channels for more variation.

@Mason Dylan i really appreciate your reply. I found the site thru google and I'm in the hacking process atm. Looks like it's gonna take quite some time so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.

I have book marked most of your videos pertaining to Logic Pro x and have thoroughly enjoyed every one of them. I started with Mixcraft 9, then Abelton Live 10 and now with Logic Pro x for maybe the last 6 or 8 months. I have no doubt Logic Pro x is my go to DAW from now and in the future. Being a retired Marine and Civil Engineer, I can appreciate your education and skillful presentation of your videos. You're definitely the man to go to learning Logic Pro x.

Nice one again Josh! Was thinking I'd just double the strings and pan them left and right while leaving the Retro Singh in the middle, but I can't process them separately as you said! Great one man! Cheers!

Great video !!!! Had a thought though...wouldn’t we need to put the pan pots from Balance to Stereo Pan mode to achieve a truer stereo imaging ?? With the balance mode, tilting the knob would select only the L or R channel & not collapse them together for a true stereo panning ?

Yeah this is a great idea, I think there's a massive difference here for clarity; it means your less likely to instantly grab an eq and hack your song to bits with this method

I’ve had countless control room arguments with producers and engineers that I want the jangly and rhythm guitars pushed to the sides and they never got it right. This will help when speaking to them. The hardest part of being a song writer is not knowing the language of the recording technology.

Mind that any sound encoded _exclusively_ in the side channel will be absolutely silent when the audio file is reproduced in mono. In this case, all S-instruments will be missing in a mono version of the mix, which will only contain the M-instruments.

Muito bom, meu amigo. Parabéns pelo vídeo! Mas ele não transforma o L em Mid e o R em side não. Ele processa o Mid/Side antes e independente do panorama. abraços

Cool trick! If you listen to this on the smartphone though, in the MS version strings are pretty much compared to layered version. So I'd say this isn't so good for mono compatibility

Any signal encoded exclusively in the S channel is never reproduced in a mono downmix.

Hi MTHG! Question--can you then save this as an actual instrument in Logic Pro, that can easily be selected again in another track? This is a very cool, and very helpful technique. Many thanks!
@MusicTechHelpGuy4 жыл бұрын
I believe you can save the entire track stack as a preset in tbt Library. There’s an option in the lower right of the library to save.
