It's so odd and honestly sad how when people think something is childish they automatically go to sexualize it. Like they see Lolitas, think it's childish and then sexualize it. Why is the automatic response to seeing something cute and childish to sexualize it?? I don't understand. Oh well Adorable coord btw! Absolutely love it 💞

it's really concerning because people will claim lolita is a f*tish because it's child-like... but also go out of their way to s*xualize children. I had to correct some guy the other day because he accused literal high school girls of wearing "s*xy school girl outfits". I had to tell him I've worked with kids and those are CHILDREN wearing their UNIFORMS. why was his first impulse to say that? how come everything associated with kids gets turned into... THAT? people are really weird.

alternative communities can be so over-sexualized across the board... reminds me of the "big titty goth gf" stereotype projected on goth women as well, and the harassment that results from that. it's just repackaged "manic pixie dream girl" shit & it's so weird. some of us just want to express ourselves!

Something I noticed is that the assumptions people make about other alternative styles often overlap with what people assume about lolita. Like the assumption that people wearing gothic fashion are into kink/bdsm stuff even if they don't incorporate items in their look that are inspired by fetish wear, the same assumption is made for lolita fashion. All the styles are accused of "doing it for attention" which I suspect is projection and the people who say it would only wear alt fashion for the attention so they assume everyone else must also think the same. Mainstream people seem more open to dating alt people now compared to the 90s, but perhaps that's due to the "big titty goth gf" trope so not progress at all. Whether I wear gothic fashion or gothic lolita fashion a lot of people still think it's scary and weird and make assumptions about my lifestyle, and then they are surprised that I like a lot of the same things as they do including having a good laugh. I'm honestly glad I don't love contemporary sweet lolita because that would mean a different set of misconceptions to deal with.

I think that paragraph serves to highlight how the protagonists impression of Dolores is solely created by his own mind and desires, and that he values it over reality and Dolores's own opinion of even herself. Which is adequate to put at the very beginning of the book since the major theme with Lolita is Humbert being an unreliable narrator and everything from the reader's perspective being conveniently wrapped around his worldview.

(No thanks to the people out there who aren't in the subculture but use that particular look to further the misconception so they can get attention and "edgy girl" points on the internet 🙄) re the video itself, when Drama Kween said, "not a lot of people take Lolita fashion seriously," I understood her to mean people outside the community not taking it seriously. It makes me sad to see the book dismissed as gross without any more depth (even though I will be the first person to tell you it's a nauseating read in many parts). Nabokov himself was a victim of CSA, and the story is not meant to paint Humbert in a positive light. Unfortunately, people have been wildly misinterpreting the book for decades now, including every major adaptation of it, so it's kind of a lost cause. I recommend the Lolita Podcast, which goes in-depth to the book and its legacy, including interviews with people in the first group that Drama Kween mentioned. The podcast host acknowledges but doesn't discuss lolita fashion since it's basically unrelated to the book. It's pretty great, if you can handle the heaviness of the topic.

Tbh yeah. I feel like society has this notion that as an adult you can't really 'play' around. You're supposed to work, get a house, have a family, and then retire/die. Maybe a small kick back or vacation every now and then. And so I think the notion of having a hobby that isn't productive ( In that it literally produces something, music, art, clothes) is foreign to a lot of people. So they see someone enjoying something for the sake of enjoying it and can't wrap their head around it so they jump to it having an ulterior motive.

This fake meaning we've placed on a word that is purely someone's name also affects lolita fashion as people think it has some sexual definition. Moral of the story, it's just a name.

Absolutely, that's where I first heard the term. When I was first diving into anime, there was both "Lolita dresses" and "lolis" or "lolicons." Nobody could blame me for conflating the two. Now I have no idea where the term "lolicon" came from, but I wonder if it's a play off of the nymphet nonsense stemming from the book. What I'd really like to know is why the fashion is also called Lolita.
@temp_unknown
@temp_unknown 2 жыл бұрын
@@NoiseDay Lolicon is a compound word like siscon, brocon, which just means 'X complex'. In sis/brocon (I've even seen the term momcon/dadcon too) it's usually a relative who is overbearing and cares a lot about their relative, and doesn't want to see them hurt by other romantically or platonically. It definitely wasn't always sexual, but it has unfortunately taken on that sexual meaning since people who use it now are referring to actual incest. Lolicon at one point was just lolita complex, meaning a liking/affinity for cute girls, it's taken on a sexual meaning just like siscon/brocon has. Sadly I don't think the words can or should be reclaimed because of how they're seen by wider audiences. Also the lolita in lolicon has nothing to do with the fashion, though I can't say for sure it's referencing the book. The name of the fashion also gets brought up a lot but I haven't seen any actual historical literature (i.e. firsthand accounts from japanese wearers) tying it back to the book, so I don't think it's modeled after the character Dolores. Kinda like how gyaru has taken on a meaning other than literally just 'gal' through the fashion, lolita isn't just a book about grooming and exploitation, it's also a literal nickname in use for centuries and a name of a jfashion subgenre.

tbh i do kind of take umbrage with the idea of "we should call people out for wearing children's clothing" posited by Drama Kween because like... where do we draw the line? children wear child sized versions of adult clothing all the time! that's normal! it's clothes! we're going to keep going on weird goose chases if we "call out" every woman we see "sexualizing children's clothing" because at the end of the day they're like... usually not wearing children's clothing? this goes for both lolita dresses or tennis skirts or overalls or whatever? this is largely a perception based on misogyny, that women are "asking for it" based on what they're wearing, and that women aren't in control of their own sexuality. pedophiles aren't interested in adult women wearing "childish" clothes! if pedophilia is what we're concerned about, say that. and another minor nitpick: the idea that Lolita & Vladimir Nabokov are not relevant in modern culture is a bit strange- Nabokov was hugely influential on modern literature, and the idea of an "unreliable narrator" presented in Lolita is still largely important today. i think a lot of people haven't read Nabokov's Lolita (not encouraging ppl to read it if it will trigger them or if they are uncomfortable with the content) but it's important to remark that it isn't an ENDORSEMENT of pedophiles, although the Kubrick film does do a lot of aestheticize and sensationalize the story, which is perhaps why it holds such a contentious position in modern culture.

i’m gonna say it because it needs to be said people need to stop labeling everyone as a predator over clothes/aesthetics. it really hurts victims more than it could ever help. misusing charged and specific language really waters it down and makes it harder for all of us to know exactly what they mean and what to look out for (ntm how often they are used as dogwhistles against a lot of unrelated communities like queer people). it would also help if people stop using words like “kink” or “sexual-“ in these topics because they too are used as dogwhistles! it makes less sense with fashion but a lot of people don’t understand the damage this language has done to people and their communities. it’s the same antagonism i got when i came out, or when people i know or know of came out. it’s not helping anyone to try to monitor and police levels of sexuality in fashion, and i feel it’s important to note how this same language is used against queer people and other groups.

I like how you mentioned Lolita is just a name out there and he did not invent it. I have an aunt named Lola which Lolita could’ve been used as a nickname for her maybe when she was younger cuz Mexicans normally add -ita to someone’s name if they’re young or for a nickname as a form of affection. For instance myself, I’m Claudia but people will call me Claudita lol idk if other cultures do that. But that was my first experience with the name and that’s what I thought, it’s just a name and then later on I found Lolita fashion and still just related it to just a name and considered it a cute name for a cute fashion. I found out about the book 🤢 after discovering the fashion.

Aside from that song she did which literally has nothing to do with the fashion and just romanticizes the novel version

what women wear is so often seen as something they're only doing for the attention of men, to the point where even when the clothing they wear is clearly non-sexual and childlike, the conclusion isn't "oh she's not doing this for a man"," it's "oh gross, this is what she thinks a man will be into." (not that only women wear lolita, but it is a fashion that society at large sees as being for women, so the conclusions society draws from it are based on its view of women and their clothing)

7:15 I remember that video and as someone very open minded and someone who’s listened a lot of of people, I think you did a fairly good job. It was fairly neutral in my opinion and the main point was things like don’t use other peoples pics w/o permission and the separation of certain spaces + appropriate behaviors in said spaces. It felt very much like “everything has its place/time, please keep things to their place/time” which is something I wholly agree with

there was this really amazing podcast series i listened to about how the nabokov book has been misinterpreted forever especially in film , when the actual book is supposed to have an unreliable narrator who youre supposed to realize is an abuser and the villain of the story. i think it was just called the lolita podcast? they briefly gloss over how the egl community doesn't have anything to do with the book and a more thorough dive on the fashion aesthetic that actually was derived from the (once again, inaccurate to the book and sexualized) movies

Mentioning the acceptance of children dressing "adult" makes sense to me, I was being shamed for not being dressed for my age in middle school for wearing scottie dog print shirts, now I'm being shamed for wanting to wear frilly dresses with scottie dog prints. People just want people to not act like kids, even kids themselves. This is actually part of the reason lolota fashion got started, rejecting the idea that the second you hit puberty you have to start presenting yourself as an ideal wife and mother to attract men.

I'm totally with you as far as the frustration that people see Lolita fashion as sexual. As a passive, casual part of the community, I've never seen (on KZbin, Twitter, insta) anyone in Lolita trying to get sexual attention. Where I disagree is on furries. Literally every time Fursuit Friday is trending, at least 50% of the posts are furry thirst traps. Not saying all furries are sexualizing it. But it's quite apparent a large part of that community do. Maybe it's just a vocal minority. I'm not in the community so I don't know. But there's a reason people outside of the furry community think it's a sex thing. It's because for a seemingly large amount of furries, it is a sex thing.
@koikat6638
@koikat6638 2 жыл бұрын
Meanwhile I will have to disagree with you. I believe that your experience with the furry community is similar to how when people first look up lolita, they see the book. I am personally not part of community but I do see more stuff related to the community due to my connections. I won't say that it's necessarily an extreme minority for the NSFW side of the community, but it is still a minority of which most of them make the fact their works are NSFW very clear and out of the way of people who don't want to see that. The majority of Furries in general though go about their hobby as you would see in most fandoms.
@brees3
@brees3 2 жыл бұрын
@@koikat6638 I see your point but I guess my experience has just been different. The frustration the lolita fashion community feels makes a ton of sense to me because they have done nothing to bring it on. I've literally never seen an actual lolita try to sexualize the fashion. On the other hand, I have seen actual furries sexualize themselves pretty often so when I hear furries say "Oh my god why do people think it's a sex thing?" Well... because it is for some of them. That's the difference for me but I see your side.
@Tiny_Koi
@Tiny_Koi 2 жыл бұрын
The difference is that ppl wearing EGL who try to make it sexual get shut down pretty quickly and a large aspect of US lolita comms is all ages community. It's obviously not appropriate for ppl who don't want to be included in kink to be forced to be especially if they are kids. Many asexuals also have found a home in EGL. Nonsexulization or the idea that your body isn't inherently sexual is a pillar of this community. Vs furries who see no need to shut down this behavior since it's all in good fun and I'd say that they use sexuality as a form of expression. Sex also just sells which is why the most popular posts being seen by outsiders are that of say a fursuit thirst trap. Sexual expression isn't necessary a pillar of furry communities but I'd say it appears to be important to most furries to express their sexuality like being LGBTQIA! Even today there isn't many places for queer ppl to be openly themselves so I think of furry communities as more of a place for that expression than inherently sexual. Thus why you will find so many furries are queer.
@Tiny_Koi

Perhaps as well when fursuit Friday is trending 50 percent are sexual because it confirms a bias that outsiders already have.
