I used to drive the 43's out of Kings X up the ECML... With 4500 hp under the bonnet ( 2250 hp ) one up front and one up the botty there was plenty of power on tap... Pulling out of the station on notch five with the Paxman Valenta turbo's screaming their little heads off and clouds of exhaust smoke ( sorry Greta Thunberg ) was something to behold with more excitement to enjoy... 125 mph here we come although they would top 148 mph... Now there is food for thought but as I did not fancy tea and biscuits with the Boss well need I say more...

Shame the weather was so grim, as this is one of the more scenic main lines in the UK, with quite a lot of famous landmarks and that cool stretch along the coast near the border. How did it compare to an intercity in Australia?
@Voyagerthe2nd3 жыл бұрын
I prefer these intercitys over Australia's trains since I have a preference for high speed, even if it's not as fast as the Mainland Europe

It is sad that BR did not straighten any of the speed limiting curves north of Darlington. More 125 mph running would have made much improvement, and an indefinite payback period.
@Voyagerthe2nd4 жыл бұрын
I would also add that a bypass through Morpeth would've significantly reduced travel times considering that it's notorious for many derailments on the ECML due to its steep curve

What makes up for slower speeds than some railways is only having few stops on some of the long distance routes.First stop York would be 4.5 hour drive from central london.

I'm glad it's not just the U.S. that has terrible passenger rail service. C'mon England, these speeds are ridiculously slow.
@cwaggs43394 жыл бұрын
Andrew Stephenson UK rail has broader networks of rail than the USA, safer trains, faster trains, cheaper trains and with the new LNER Azuma, train trains that go up to 125 mph. Mostly good customer service that I’ve expierienced and almost all American that see UK rail networks realise it’s just better
@zetch9724 жыл бұрын
J Vlogs the HSTs went up to 125mph too. Andrew is right, which is why HS2 is being built currently.
@cwaggs43394 жыл бұрын
Zetch ik 125mph isn’t exclusive to the uk. However the UK has much broader railway. It’s much more normalized and wider. In the US people don’t even tend to take the train and the ones that are available , I mean don’t get me started about Amtrak 😂😂😂
@James-gc5if4 жыл бұрын
The UK doesn't have a terrible passenger rail service. It's slow compared to much of western Europe, but slow doesn't automatically mean "terrible". On the whole, the service is reliable, modern, frequent and comprehensive. It is possible to travel from virtually anywhere to virtually anywhere else by train. Could it be improved? Absolutely, especially on local routes outside of the main urban areas. But unlike the U.S. (which is rich enough to have the world's best railway network if it really wanted it), the UK is investing billions into the railways, including making the network larger and faster, replacing vintage stock with new trains, increasing capacity on certain lines, improving signalling etc, etc. Other improvements could be implemented just by looking at what our neighbours in Europe do right and copying them, however unfashionable that might be at the moment :P BTW, this video doesn't just show England, but also Scotland.

Uk train service is actually quite good

Unless and until the awful 800s get serious comfort and refinement mods, BR's IC125, IC225 and loco-hauled versions of the Mk3 coaches will stay the standard-bearer for quality InterCity travel. That won't change for 20? 30? years!! What an obscenely-expensive, wasted opportunity the 800s are.

Yeah but this is Britain; the land of muddled thinking where the government knows the cost of everything and the value of nothing. It never allowed enough cash for overhead wires to be strung up in a coherent rolling national programme, so in 1972/3 BR came up with this brilliant diesel second-best. Of course the power cars and carriage slam doors look 'old and cheap' today, but the HSTs were only intended as a stopgap to be replaced in the 1990s with wizzo futuristic electrics. Instead they survived on London's mainlines until 2019. Their replacements are plasticky crap and the government recently chopped off HS2's northern half, so the misery continues. Nuff said.
