🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 01:15 🤔 Social liberalism is often defined by the "harm principle," which means individuals can do what they want as long as they don't harm others. This principle is commonly used to justify various personal choices, such as LGBTQ+ rights. 02:59 🌍 The landscape of social liberalism has changed significantly in the last 60 years, particularly after the civil rights movement and the rise of feminism. The DSM register, used to assess mental health, has evolved to be more accepting of homosexuality. 05:32 💔 Incestuous relationships have not received the same level of acceptance as homosexual relationships, despite both being consensual activities between adults. This inconsistency raises questions about the application of the harm principle. 08:07 🤷♂️ Comparing homosexuality to incestuous relationships can be thought-provoking and challenging, as it questions the consistency of how the harm principle is applied to different situations. 10:28 🧐 Utilitarianism, which underlies the harm principle, suggests that actions should maximize pleasure and minimize pain. This ethical framework faces criticism and challenges, such as whether it can provide a universal basis for morality. 13:51 🤨 Utilitarianism, as presented by James Mill and Jeremy Bentham, raises concerns about predicated morality solely on maximizing personal pleasure and minimizing personal pain, without clear evidence or universal applicability. 19:34 🤔 The utilitarian principle of maximizing pleasure and minimizing pain may not be universally accepted, and the argument for its validity may not be convincing to everyone. Some argue that just because something is a certain way doesn't mean it ought to be the way. 22:38 🤔 The concept of altruism and whether it exists is a fundamental question, and it's not easy to assert definitively. 23:20 💭 Altruism is conceivable, where individuals may act for something greater than themselves, such as their country, religion, or family. 24:02 👥 Utilitarian arguments can be made against certain practices, like homosexuality, based on potential harm to society. 25:56 🌍 Individualism often prevails in liberal responses, emphasizing individual autonomy in decision-making. 27:21 🔍 Understanding the difference between validity and soundness is crucial in evaluating arguments. 30:34 ❓ The first premise in a utilitarian argument, "Utilitarianism is true if happiness is the one and only thing desirable for its own sake," lacks a moral element and is unjustified. 36:05 🔄 The second premise, "The only proof of desirability is desire," relies on circular reasoning and doesn't provide a valid argument for utilitarianism. 39:50 🤔 The syllogism attempts to move from "is" (desire) to "ought" (desirability), creating a cyclical or tautological argument.

I have been saying and believing some of these principles without being aware. I even was irritated when scholars condemn liberalism without explanation the root of this ideology. I now see how the concept of pain and pleasure and making them the parameters of social construction to the extent of making them as important as God is a clear contradiction with tawhid.

@MilitierTalksUncensored9 ай бұрын
@@botsneako Yes, someone might acknowledge the importance of honesty but not always desire to be honest in every situation. Another example could be someone acknowledging the importance of physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle but not necessarily desiring to exercise regularly or eat healthily.

Salam really enjoyed this discussion. I would like to put forward that the premise to why following Desires are the desirable are that they are fulfilling human nature and human needs. Thus humans are satiated when their desires are met, whilst not harming anyone else and also a benefit to society as a whole when they are in a state of happiness and wellbeing having their desires fulfilled as they please as long as they are not harming anyone. I would really appreciate a response from sapience institute regarding this as this is a principle that has been at odds with Islamic principles for me. I didn't pick up that this was fully broken down in the discussion.
@mindfulart26403 жыл бұрын
Salam, i'd say that the initial premise was quite ambiguous. You're doing the Author's work for him. I'd like to humbly and succintly deconstruct and highlight some of the complicated ungrounded assumptions it carries implicitly by asking questions: 1/Does need EQUAL desire? 2/What are those needs? Are they "needs" in the first place? 3/What desires are WORTH fulfilling? 4/Is the "no harm" principle sufficient to have an optimal outcome for all humanity? 5/Is happiness solely the ultimate goal in life? 4/What is the ethical way and criteria to fulfill the needs that are worth-fulfilling? All these beg the question: "What is a life worth living and what is the moral and ethical conduct to have in order to achieve happiness and goodness for the humankind? Philosophical books about ethics & morality help identify these problems as they've all been raised in Aristotle's time. As religion attempts to answer them.

The Basic Reasoning of Logic ! Logical reasoning, is the understanding which happenstance, by inferring a conclusion from a set of premises. For instance : Premises and conclusions are normally seen as propositions. These 'propositions' is a statement(s) which makes a claim (indicating), about the subject matter. Thus, the implication of the 'proposition'(s), act as truth-bearers. As a result the conclusion is either true or false. For Example Logical Reasoning ! A process of reasoning known as the 'logical reasoning' uses the existing, knowledge to draw conclusions or to make predictions. Also to construct explanations. They are Three methods of Reasoning : (as follows) : 1. the Deductive, 2. Inductive, and 3. Abductive approaches. In addition to Logic, which consists of : Five Principles : (as follows) : (a) proximal similarity, (b) heterogeneity of irrelevancies, (c) discriminant validity, (d) empirical interpolation and extrapolation, (e) explanation. So if I understood correctly, he admitted that there is no proof to prove that we should follow utilitarianism. But he then continues to say that we should follow utilitarianism because we all share the same end goal which is to maximize pleasure and minimize pain. But in conclusion, just because we have this desire (assuming that we all do) , that does not mean we *should* follow it. Basically the is-ought problem

Aristotle's Logic is Based upon the Kinds of Propositions which can be analyzed ! The Four Components of Aristotelian Logic. Consisting of the following 5 Areas : 1. Usually a quantifier, (“every,” “some,” or the universal negative quantifier “no”), 2. Subject, 3. Copula, 4 Negation, (perhaps or “not”) 5, a Predicate. Aristotle defined Logic ! A time when it was universally accepted by Western philosophers until, the nineteenth century. Aristotle, Logic was seen as the instrument (the "organon"), by means of which we come to know anything. His proposition of the formal rules applied for correct reasoning and, the basic principles of categorical logic. For instance : the 3 Principles of Aristotle ! Aristotle determined that persuasion comprises of a combination of three appeals. 1. Logos, (Anyone seeking to persuade an audience should craft his/her message with facts). 2. Pathos, (Tapping an argument's emotional aspect ), 3. Ethos. (Presenting his/her apparent moral standing). The form of a Principle, which tells us that a statement such as : For instance Two reference : (as follows below). Previous example of (Syllogism): All men are mortal; Socrates is a man; therefore, Socrates is mortal. Second instance : "If P then P." is necessarily true. For example : "if it is raining, then it is raining" must be true. On the other hand the 4 Principles of Logic ! According to D.Q. McInerny, (Book Being Logical) : Written on the Four Principles of Logic. (as follows) : 1.Principle of Individuality, 2, Precept of the excluded middle, 3. Principle of sufficient understanding, 4. Principle of contradiction. Therefore : the Logic in Philosophy ! is of a principle of the second kind, that logician study. Which tells us that Logic in any statement is of the form. ...

I believe the ayah is "enjoin" rather than "enjoy" it is talking about what you should do when giving advice or how you should live life in general, you are allowed to do THE GOOD (objectively set by Allah, not based on your Hawaa' i.e. desires) and forbid THE evil (again this set OBJECTIVELY). The Quran categorically prohibits the harm principal in numerous areas: 45:23 "Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah ? Then will you not be reminded?" and also 28:50 "And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people." are just two examples of many many more. Hope this helps.

BarakAllahou fikoum to Brother Hijab and the Sapience Institute team. I agree with the comparison with incest but incest is not considered acceptable simply because there are not thousands of people practising it wanting to "come out of the closet". Furthermore, the defenders of homosexuality want proof that it is harmful to society and the individual if we use incest, we are missing our target I believe. We believe that both practices are harmful to the individual both physically and mentally as well as for society at large. Anything that Allah swt has made haram is harmful. I think that this should be emphasized more and use the incest comparison to prove the incoherence of their position but not as a primary argument against homosexuality. What matters is the nocivity of homosexuality.

Selam Alaykum, These are some questions I have if someone wants to answer them, or if you want a video idea: 1. How does Islam measure value (in humans, animals, etc.) ? - How does Islam deal with the Trolley Problem? (if there are 5 men on one side and 1 man on the other side and the trolley will hit the 5 men unless you pull the lever and other similar situations, etc.) 2. How do we determine what we **should** do/follow? - Why **should** we follow Islam rather than Utilitarianism? Thank you :)
@khaledosama18363 жыл бұрын
Walaykum Al-Salam 1. In Islam the values of things are derived from Allah, its through Allah we know what is valuable and what is less valuable. And for the trolley problem I advice you to watch hijab's video on consequentialism in this series, he mentions the maslaha in the sharia and he mentioned very similar cases and how to deal with it. 2. We determine what we should do/follow through Islam (As Muslims we prespouse that Islam is the absolute truth) So what ever goes along with Islam its ok to do it, and whatever goes against Islam we don't do it. And the reason we should follow Islam rather than utilitarianism is that Islam is evidenced and proved to be the truth while utilitarianism has no proofs whatsoever. Hope you're satisfied with my answers.
