the thing with electric motors is you can infinitely control the motor.. you can have a button that makes the tires spin at any speed or rpm instantly. you can even have a lever that makes the car pivot. you don't even need a handbrake.. you can literally decide what control you need and what you'd like to do and have a button or a dial for it.. got to get out of your mind the traditional way to control it.. its new paradigm... start from scratch...design new moves,, design new controls...

Travis Reeder is rad & a good driver. I do not like EV. Many people do , because we live in an age where people prefer having an alternative opinion. First of all, the tech is not very new. What's possible now was also possible in 1990. Brushless has been around for 50+ years, EV cars for 110 years. Tesla's "breakthrough" was using more batteries to get more range. Which is no breakthrough, putting a larger gastank in a Hummer is the same thing. But why I really dislike EV , is because I'm from Europe. Here, EU governments are using insane amounts of tax money to push EV. In my country, there isn't even sufficient power to get 4% of all cars on EV. It would cost 50% of our GDP to change that (roughly 450 billion) and then its not even green energy (which is now 10% netto of all energry sold here). These governments use EV to outlaw combustion cars. They will use EV to cancel out motorsports. You can say "it won't happen" but it already is happening, with major manufacturers pulling out of rallying and endurance to do EV crap. Soon, racetracks will only be permitted EV cars. This way, people will swallow it. Banning racecars overnight would cause too much protest, so the coming years will be used to replace ICE with EV. EV is still bizarrely dangerous, with spontaneous fires caused by thermal runaway, turning entire parking lots to ashes, impossible to put out unless the car is submerged in a 20ft container of water. These problems will only increase. Also imagine, 250 of these cars charging in your neighbourhood. Even if 0.1% developed a problem, its serious. With America getting back on track with the ludicrous Trojan Horse Paris Climate Accord, this stands to happen in USA aswell. Alternatives such as biodiesel, LPG and ethanol are being laughed away and ignored, because governments have made their deal with EV. They love the idea of control; they can switch off your EV at any time if you don't meet their requirements. We must oppose EV and not be naive. This is a vessel that governments will use to outlaw Corvettes, S13's, AE86's diesel trucks etc.

I think Ford actually is the best positioned to make an electric drift car. They could partner with RTR and develop a car using the power train from the 1400 fiesta. All manufacturers stock price right now is driven off of the EV line up. Why not invest in an EV drift car in formula D? It would help show that Ford is committed to the EV lineup in the future. They have the budget and they have the team to help develop it on a championship platform. Re-engineering the suspension wouldn’t have to be done other than some spring rates. They also made that 9 second drag mustang so battery placement and management has been at least looked at. I love the concept. Great job Travis.

Pretty sure there’s no doubt it could be done with a modest motorsports budget and the right amount of ingenuity in drivetrain fabrication. If VW can make an EV racer go THAT FAST all the way up Pikes Peak for a little under 10 minutes uphill the whole way at high elevation that robs any cooling system of effectiveness, the 10 drift runs needed to win an event with the proper access to high-speed charging and requisite in-car battery management/cooling would be pretty easy in comparison.

I don't think it will be the future personally. The margin for error is massive. Take for instance the battery pack remember when the Ferrari crashed and exploded into a inferno but was able to be put out and got back under control and the driver was ok, it could have been a lot worse if it was electric, once one cell of the battery is compromised you got to bet every single other cell will become compromised with it which leads to massive fires that can last for days even with fire fighters trying to put it out. As an example the Rimac that took a tumble off a small hill in sweden the battery pack was compromised and within moments it was in flames and thank goodness hammond got out of the car in time, the car then continued to catch fire FOR 7 DAYS after this as each cell of the battery collapsed. You might think well a fuel tank can become compromised and that is 100% true but.... without a spark its just a fuel spill and can be cleaned up in a matter of at most an hour but the moment a battery pack is compromised its a danger and even if it does catch fire it can be put out relatively quickly and doesn't shut the whole event down. So for events especially formula drift events there is almost a wreck at every round so unless they can find a solution for that problem its to dangerous for the drivers and one bad wreck could shut the event down. Also even if they can put out the fire the toxic fumes from the burning of acids in the batteries and other materials released into the air is no good for anyone in the area neither is carbon dioxide but its not nearly as bad so events like long beach that is in the middle of a bustling city will cease to exist because of the danger for passers by. Also I might sound old fashioned but the sound is in the top 2 best things about motorsport and without it it can feel dull which is one reason why Formula E is no where near as popular as Formula 1. Also as someone watching you cannot hear what the drivers are doing listening to the different throttle inputs and variations shows the drivers different styles and skill with an electric car other than the smoke trail you have no idea what the driver is doing which is less interesting for the people watching but also much more dangerous for the person who is battling him. To me electric cars are cool and all in some ways but will never be as cool as a gasoline car nor as fun to drive. Another point I would like to bring up is that it will eventually kill off any variation in the sport, all electric motors for the most part other than different outputs and little things here and their are the exact same so eventually everyone is going to end up with the same powertrain because this motor and battery system works the best so then it will all be up to the drivers and it will just be more of a let down when they fail and there is no real hail marry drivers coming in with an upset because everyone will be so ironed out and progression in the sport will just cease. But where as now every motor is different and behaves different in each chassis and people can have a personal preference because engines have certain characteristics that some love and others hate and as new engines come out and new cars the progression will just continue and thereby move the multibillion dollar aftermarket industry forward to new and better things. And people can come in and do things that have never been done before, For example Ryan tuerck in his Toyota Corrola making over 900whp on the stock style motor and being a serious contender for the championship, or what about his teammate Fredric Aasbo with the MK5 supra giving us some of the best battles in the 2020 season and pushing the platform of the MK5 forward. So in conclusion no I do not think Electric is the future for formula drift

You need to drive 100k miles to equalize emission output of one 95kWh battery pack compared to diesel powered vehicles. And then recycling becomes an issue. There are no procedures to process lithium ion batteries and you can't overhaul them either. Don't get me wrong I'm all for eco friendly but imo synthetic fuels or hydrogen will be more sustainable than electric battery powered vehicles.
