Back in the 70's my school was one of the top schools in the province but we didn't have trained coaches. I was a long jumper and I had zero training so I just went out there and jumped. I wonder how much better I could have been simply by using techniques from these videos.

That's one of those questions we all ask no matter what experiences we have had. I reached nearly 26 feet in the long jump and represented Britain, but I do look back and wonder how much further I could have jumped if I was able to go back in time and coach myself with the knowledge I now have now! Are you involved with the sport now? I guess I'm trying to make up a bit for what I didn't know as an athlete by helping others to hopefully max their potential. All the best and thanks for stopping by.

Are you aiming for a high knee drive in takeoffs? Ps. Is this still the go to video for takeoffs or have you released a newer one?
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach3 жыл бұрын
Knee needs to go out and up and not just up. The out refers to hip extension ... we want a drive from the board a momentary pause before moving into the mid air action. This video has stood the test of time but I’ve added videos on the last three steps and take-off step, which of course all relate. May look at pulling a new one together as I’m always learning through experience. Hope this helps and thanks for passing by.

Hello John. Good morning. I'm field & track professor from Brazil. Can I use print of this video in my book? I need it to illustrate the drills. Thanks advance.

Yes, that’s fine. If you can send me a copy of what you’ve done. Johnshepherdfitness@gmail.com I’ve met Nelio Moura and we correspond from time to time 🇧🇷🇬🇧👍🏽

Good video again John. Can I ask what are the benefits of the mat under the penultimate step. Does this not naturally raise the hips slightly before the last step or are you instructing the athletes otherwise? Thanks in advance.
@Johnshepherdtrackcoach4 жыл бұрын
Hi, the mat on the pen step is there to add additional load (force absorption and return) from the take-off (it's not there for any real technical reason). Eccentric capacity is crucial for long and triple jumpers at take-off and this drill is very good at developing that. The slight drop of a couple of cms is enough to create considerable greater force .... we will only do around 6 efforts from 6-10 steps in a session. Hope that explains things. Stay safe
