I've always been an anti Sony guy and loved black magic and the C70 because the image outweighed the rigging and batteries etc. After a full on year of weddings and run and gun...just bought 2 FX3's and selling the C70 and pocket 6k lol. Love my FX3, Similar story here, Started out with Mamiya and Pentax in the film days. Then Canon for about 15 years digital, then for video Sony A7s because is was light years ahead for video but hated the colors. Then about 4 years ago went with Blackmagic, love it. Had the 4K then the 6K. Got tired of manually focusing and the weight all rigged out. The quality blows anything away in the price range, but sold my 6K and all the 100 accessories,batteries and such and jumped on the FX3 and have been totally happy. Much lighter and the Auto focus is stellar. I am in my 50's and can finally relax filming not worrying about focusing all the time now and the light weight set up...On my big paid gigs I use an Alexa mini and have focus pullers and all the bling bling bc I am only Directing. The C70 looks nice but I prefer the Sony FX3. My only "complaint" is I wish the FX3 allowed my Lut's and had False Color or waveforms.

This was appreciated. Thanks for making it. Sony has been enticing for a while, but given that my company is so vested in Canon cameras and glass, the R5 made the most sense. Especially as a hybrid shooter. The R5 is a phenomenal stills camera and an excellent video camera. We do most of our recording externally to an Atomos ninja v+, so overheating isn’t really a concern for us. Being able to shoot ProRes Raw externally has been dope. File sizes are huge, but worth it to us. Sorry for my lack of brevity. Blessings.

Thanks for watching and the comment! Yeah the key for me was that ability to shoot with zero rigging. That plus the fact that ProRes RAW still isn't supported by Davinci swayed me to Sony. I think I still dig the Canon "look" more but it's been a net positive for me with the FX3.

Wow, awesome review! This hit really close to home as I have never owned anything but Canon cameras for photography. When I got into video last year, I looked at every brand’s offerings. I basically wanted no rig and the best autofocus (because I am a DIY run & gun music video maker). I needed 10 bit 4:2:2 4K and overheating was not acceptable. I got an a7siii because it was cheaper and two Sigma ART lenses - the 24-70mm f2.8 and 85mm f1.4. Once I got the camera settings dialed in, it is a dream to work with! Suerp-quick to set up and discreet. I also edit on an intel Mac laptop. I use XAVC-S and proxies in FCP. I was thinking about an FX3 as a second angle for interviews, but will probably get another a7siii. Thank you so much for your advice!

Another great video, further solidifying my own confirmation bias towards this camera as i use mine daily too haha. Very interesting that your computer was able to handle h.265 better than h.264 422 considering the huge compression... I would love to use it but operate in a PAL area and h.265 only records 50 and 100p for me, not 25p, which is infuriating because it will do 24p if i set it to NTSC.

There’s a little spacer you can buy that will allow you to use other mics in the mic holder without handling noise. Also, regarding the white balance, isn’t there a button on the camera labeled white balance? Wondering what you meant when you said it was unintuitive.
@TheGlassEyeTV

I guess coming from a blackmagic it's many more steps. You click white balance, then you have to either pick a preset one or you go to kelvin, THEN you can scroll through different temperatures. I prefer dialing it in, and the shortcut I customized is one click then the rear wheel is your kelvin controller.

Oh boy I feel you. I'm mainly shooting stills... came from Sony but I cannot get Sony stills to look good. It was such a pain. The colors weren't even close to what I wanted. I'm so surprised not more people complaining about it. So after switching to the R5 I sometimes don't even edit colors at all since I like them that much straight out of camera. Surprisingly I'm not that bothered by Sony colors when it comes to video. Maybe SLOG handles that better i really don't understand this. Now I'm pretty happy that I'm in the Canon ecosystem so I can use the same glass for my BMPCC6K Pro and my R5. Really didn't want to have two different mount systems while traveling. Even tho you don't really need to rig the 6K Pro that much... but it's still a commitment especially when traveling. But the colors and image quality of the Blackmagic are one of the reasons I got excited about filmmaking at all. Well... Would love to only travel with one camera... but now I at least travel with less lenses. Got to say the quality you produce with the FX3 is incredible! Love your videos. Cheers

Hey Nima! I apologise in advance for all the questions in this comment, but I’m a big fan! So…1 Month and an R5C after this FX3 video are you considering consolidating back into Canon? I‘m actually selling my remaining E-mount glass. I switched to the RF system a couple years ago after owning an A7iii and just kept my Sony glass to hedge my bets, but I like where Canon seems to be headed enough to go RF exclusively...and the Sony menus and handling put me off lol…Also, I also watched your R5 video and 1) I love my Honda RV too! 2) What Canon are you shooting for stills? 3) Do you draw your own illustrations? (They‘re so entertaining). 4) Do you script your videos at all? You’re so smooth on camera. I want to do youtube and I’d be stoked if I could eventually present content like you do. Perfect blend of information and entertainment. Thanks for the fun.👍🏾

Man, I feel your dilemma. Let's just say I put a $50 deposit on the R5C. Mind you it's refundable so I'm not entirely committed but certainly curious. I have so many thoughts and questions about the R5C I probably can't fit it in this message but in no particular order 1. I think the R5C may have inferior dynamic range when compared to the FX3 and it all depends how much of a difference. 2. I think for fast paced work run/gun stuff like YT videos, the FX3 will still be more convenient with regards to size and the AF. 3. I currently have an EOS R but was considering switching to Sony to share lenses - but now I'm leaning back towards Canon for stills. 4. My thoughts are perhaps trying it out when it's released to shoot an actual thing with it before making any decisions. And yes, I do the drawings myself - I find them enjoyable and they can often help achieve the "don't just say it, show it" approach to making videos. I do script them to a certain degree but things often change once I hit record. There's SO MUCH fumbling and terrible takes that hit the cutting room floor. The edit may come off as smooth but the recording is anything but! And DO IT! If you have the time, I say it's worth trying KZbin out. Just think, you and I wouldn't be chatting had it not been for me starting a channel.

Would be a tough one. I like having my camera with me when I’m out and about the C70 is a bit chunky. Ever since I got into the Sony world with the FX3 I’m growing more and more fond of that camera. The R5C would be more of a consideration but I haven’t tried it yet

To be honest, probably for reasons that didn’t ultimately matter. 1. Because of the top handle (didn’t end up using it much) 2. The mounting options built into the body of the camera (I don’t mount anything to it) 3. Internal fan to combat overheating (from what I’ve seen, neither of the two really overheat so probably a non issue) 4. Slightly smaller body 5. Looks a lot cooler than the A7Siii (subjective aesthetic taste)

I use the top handle on just about every shoot I do and its one of the main reasons I bought the camera. Almost every shoot I do I use a boom mic and I want to be able to to go LXR into the camera with some kind of passable preamp.The handle gives you that. Why you would put a shotgun mic on the top of a camera is beyond me as you won't get usable sound like that anyway. It doesn't do 24fps.The actual corresponding frame rates are as follows: 24p: 23.98 fps, 30p: 29.97 fps, 60p: 59.94 fps, and 120p: 119.88 fps.

I have an FX3 since 6 months too and I do not agree with the top handle.. What's that idea of putting tape? There are rubber spacers specially made for that but you can also use a piece of old bicycle inner tube .. I know its weird to have to do that on a 4000 box camera, but it works! No noise.. And other than that, to me, its the opposite, I've never used my FX3 without the top handle, although I was convinced I would take advantage of the modularity and compactness of the system (and I therefore even purchased the Sony ECM-B1M shotgun mic to use without the handle)

Surprisingly my biggest complaint is the screen. Not the brightness of it but the swivel joint. I actually find myself preferring the screen on my a7iii to the one on my a7siii/fx3. I thought I missed the swivel screens my Canons used to have but the grass isn't always greener on the other side. The swivel screen is a lot less practical when rigging the camera out imo. I like the way I can easily tilt my a7iii screen up, and that would work so well with the awkward joystick whateveryoucallit that the fx3 has on top instead of on the back. Oh well. Great camera.

Agree with the weird joystick placement. I don’t think I’ve ever used it. But I’m a fan of the swivel screen especially on a gimbal.

Love the video but will disagree on white balance. Maybe because I set my buttons up as if it was a hybrid camera but the custom white balance tool is the best I’ve ever used. It’s so intuitive and being able to move the little box to your gray card, wherever it is in your scene, and you’re set.
@TheGlassEyeTV
@TheGlassEyeTV 2 жыл бұрын
Fair enough. But I’m not a fan of the card thing as it’s just not practical for the way I shoot. I prefer just dialing it in Kelvin as I go about my shoot

@@TheGlassEyeTV not sure if you e tried one but the A1 has a cool auto white balance lock that you can program to a button so you can leave auto on, then lock it in for specific shots where it could shift and make grading difficult. I hoped it would come to the fx3 in firmware but I doubt t it.

Have you considered the new Sony A7IV as your next camera. Alot of people are selling there FX3 and A7SIII for the A7IV. Even though it has a crop at 4k 60 it's oversampling from 7k makes the FX3/A7S3 footage look like 1080p.
@TheGlassEyeTV

I’ve considered it as an addition but certainly not to replace it. It seems to be a great hybrid camera but the rolling shutter alone is reason not to get rid of the FX3. It all depends on what you’re shooting.

“You can only use Sony (microphones). If you’re using like a Sennheiser or a Rode it’s too big”... Not true; this shock mount perfectly fits the Sennheiser MKH 50 and the like. And please don’t wrap tape around your mic like a tard; if you get handling noise from that it’s your own fault. You can buy rubber o-rings specifically for this purpose from B&H Photo for under $10. Or go to your local Menard’s/Lowe’s/Home Depot; they have them there for under a dollar. Just search for “rubber o-ring gaskets”. They come in many sizes.
