I find the food of Ikaria, tempting and tantalizing. This "Blue Zone" place is often touted as ideal by proponents of the so called "Whole Food, Plant Based Diet," but they tend to gloss over the fact that these people, along with nearly all the peoples who inhabit The Blue Zones (and China, re The China Study) *do* consume animal products. Furthermore, they tend to completely ignore (with their insistence on eschewing oil, in any form) that the people of Ikaria are apt to slather Olive Oil over practically every thing. Amen to that, say I! 😉 On the topic of heating Olive Oil, I would point out that, while espousing the benefits of drizzling (to put it mildly) Olive Oil on their food, they're also heating/cooking with it? Again, just an observation, not a criticism!
@Daniel-pr4uk2 жыл бұрын
They repeatedly mentioned olive oil and it is featured predominantely in the video, they didn't say to eschew all oil!! They also didn't say that they avoid meat but that Ikarians use it in small amounts, and that is true in my experience (as someone who lived on Ikaria for three months). They definitely do eat some meat, but nowhere near as much as they eat in the US (and when they do eat meat, the plate is also full with many vegetables..). Beans seem to be a more common choice of protein than meat on Ikaria, by the way. And the meat they do eat is of a very different quality than what most people eat in US. It is from animals grown on the island by the people themselves and are free to eat wild plants their whole lives. The goats are grown by your family or neighbors, rabbits are caught wild, chickens run freely everywhere (beef is almost unheard of on the island). But in my view, as importsntvas the food is, it isn't even the main factor. The main factor, in my view, is the psychological factor. People are just a lot more relaxed than in tne US. Much much less stressed out. It is NOT a culture based around money, NOT a culture of constant hustle for money and all the stress involved in that. People are relaxed, the smiles are not fake, the talks are genuine, people share many things with each other (for example, many of the plots to grow vegetables are communal/shared) and there's a feeling of comraderie and kindness and caring among the people. In my view, that's what makes the biggest difference.

in sardinia and nicoya bluezone they eat more animal products then americans but mainly through dairy, these ppl that run the bluezone idea are undercover vegans who want to push their agenda into everything

Does heating olive oil turn it into saturated fat? ...a bunch of chemical changes do occur (which vary depending on the composition of the olive oil used and the heating time and temperature), however turning it into saturated fat, Doctor?

It’s an American Documentary after all, it could be a product placement! 😜 Frankly those Ikarians are famous of not giving a f@ck & “snobbing” time (the buses on the island take off when they are full or half full & don’t have a time schedule for those who don’t know it!)...So they can care less for a bit of Coca Cola or some shots of wine (if you watch the whole documentary)! 😉 + Check out the importance of >100 kind of spices & herbs growing over there + The Levels of some “Strange” Physical (not man created) Radioactivity detected on the place!

Quite, well said. I've heard a few of these Whole Food Plant Based purists relating that they "fry" food in non stick pans. That way, you don't need oil, apparently! Never mind the fact that the people of the med slather their food with Olive Oil, a fact that they tend to overlook!

But in my view, as importsnt as the food is, it isn't even the main factor. The main factor, in my view, is the psychological factor. People are just a lot more relaxed than in the US. Much much less stressed out. It is NOT a culture based around money, NOT a culture of constant hustle for money and all the stress involved in that. People live in modest simple houses (and everyone has a home, there are no homeless people and no destitute people) and don't have a lot of possesions, but seem content. People are relaxed, the smiles are not fake, the talks are genuine, people share many things with each other (for example, many of the lands to grow vegetables are communal/shared) and there's a feeling of comraderie and kindness and caring among the people. Maybe the Coke on the table is related to a concept called "Journalistic Honesty", rarer than centenarians. Stop being puritan health buffs - what represented 95% of their diet and what represented less than 1%?? Nothing worse than picky perfectionists and the perceived dream kitchen layout!!
@bluezones8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Rhodes Very true. The inhabitants of the island of Ikaria may occasionally indulge in a sweet treat or a Coke, but the vast majority of their diet is full of hearty vegetable and bean dishes.
@peterrhodes70018 жыл бұрын
+Blue Zones, LLC 100% agree. The core diet, which generates the substantial health benefit, is loaded with fresh vegetables and vegetarian proteins (95-99% of overall intake). Food or beverages which represent 1% or less of the overall consumption, have little impact on physical health but may add benefit to emotional health through celebration. I praise the video editor for leaving the soft drink in the shot around the dining table. It's modern day realism and just shows you don't have to be a puritan or perfectionist to succeed with dietary health. Consider: "Freedom to Choose" promotes positive health attributes while "Imposition of Guilt" often has negative effects on mental health.
@aedefreitas8 жыл бұрын
+Blue Zones, LLC They eat way more meat than given credit for. Okinawa is known as the island of pork. Sardinia's signature dish is the roast pig... Nicoya also eats a ton of meat. And the individuals in Lomo Linda, California who eat Fish, Dairy & Eggs live longer than the vegans.
@bluefernlove8 жыл бұрын
+Peter Rhodes agree, Coke is not bad, but people want to pick their food-villain every decade or so, and this time sugar is evil.
@bluefernlove8 жыл бұрын
+Anthony DeFreitas They never said they didn't, they just don't eat it all year round, being Orthodox Christians, they usually avoid meat and ALL animal proteins (including dairy) for the duration of lent, not just in small islands, but in all of Greece. It's common practice and who knows, maybe that's key. From a biological point of view, that would be a much needed brake from excess iron.

this is fresh raw virgin olive oil rich in polyphenols, they consume it a lot and live very long. You are confusing with refined oils that are really harmful.
