My grandad lived on little Diomede as an elementary school teacher with my grandmother. He lived there during the cold war era so he had a lot of great stories. He said that he could see soviet spies looking at him if he used binoculars from across the ice, and that the natives sometime traveled across the ice and talked to the Russians, and they would sometime bring messages to each other. There was also once a polar bear that lived underneath the elementary school that needed to be driven out.

Something I was wondering about: Do the residents of Little Diomede ever visit Big Diomede for any reason? Like to hunt, for instance? I realize the Russians have non-permanent residents stationed somewhere over there for at least part of the year, and that the indigenous inhabitants were forcibly relocated by Russia to the Russian mainland. I also wonder what happened to that community, btw.

@JaysWorldTravels2 жыл бұрын
There are flights everyday as long as weather is good. Flights in the winter with the ice runway l and helicopter in the summer on the pad. Diesel is shipped in by boat for the generators. They earn their income from various jobs. I didn’t use internet there. They have cell towers at the top of the mountain for phones. They have a public shower in the laundrymat since there is no running water in the houses: only outhouse style toilets.

@@JaysWorldTravels yessir no kidding, I believe 6 -8 days on a fishing boat that would be very tough, one of the most difficult places on earth to get too. But thats also why no other youtuber has been there. You can be the first man! Just think about what Neil Armstrong had to go thru, can't be worse than that lol

Are there any jobs on the island?
@JaysWorldTravelsАй бұрын
No, there are just 100 people there. Some of their jobs are just catching seals to eat for dinner. You don’t need much money to live up there since it’s subsistence living. You go find your food in nature.

how/why do you travel around the world? are you still traveling now?
@JaysWorldTravels Жыл бұрын
Yes, I’m still traveling. I was in St. Kitts, Antigua, St. Barth and now in Puerto Rico. Next will be Bolivia. I travel by plane, bus, and hitchhiking. Why? Because I’m curious to visit places I’ve never been to before. New airports, new towns, new islands. I especially like to discover something I’ve never seen before.
