It's amazing that at some point, even now, some good looking amiibos were considered common and were going for dirt cheap. Amiibos like Palutena, Lucas, Ryu, Waluigi (all like $10 or less on Ebay) and the Splatoon 1 pack amiibos ($20), and how the most sought after amiibo like Corrin P2 and Tiki in some regards, plummeted in price due to their restock, from $80 to $100 to $25 or $30 at most.

I put this on while playing my Switch, and it was incredibly comfy. I am one of the madmen Ant refers to, who has a near complete amiibo collection... all still in box. You posted this only like a week after the Splatoon 3 and Tears of the Kingdom Zelda/Ganon amiibo released. They had quite a long run

When Smash Melee was released with its opening cutscene, it set a burning desire into me to own little figurines of each and every character. Years later, it seemed as if my childhood dream had come true, and while I managed to snag a lot of them, the ongoing scarcity of Amiibo in my part of the world frustrated me to the point where I eventually lost interest. It was a lot of running around, going to every store time and again, being massively disappointed constantly, spending hundreds of dollars on ebay... And now they sit in a box in my basement. Like, I kind of get the limited supply with the original wave, but I mean, we got one Alm/Celica for the ENTIRE city... ONE. And that's also just one for every adjacent city and town within a 50 km radius. And there was never a restock. And that wasn't the exception, that was the rule. We got one to three of most of the Amiibo's that wern't Mario or Pikachu. At some point, they should have figured out the supply issue, but they never did. Now years later, I find it annoying that games like TOTK get new Amiibo that unlock in game items exclusive to that specific figure, when I already have not one, not two, not three, but FIVE Link Amiibo already... And 3 of them pretty much do nothing in any game. There's no reason that a Link Amiibo can't just be a Link Amiibo and be usable in future games. Oh well, at least the quality of the figures have improved... Very disappointed when I got my Shulk Amiibo and the design on the back of his pants were smeared. Good luck getting a replacement because there weren't any.

Honestly, those are the ones that have gained interest the most too. Just look at the prices online. For reference, these were $3 random gacha balls from like GameStop and I think the Pokemon Center. Now they run anywhere from like $20 for Lucario to $80 for a Piplup and the full set sold together without the shiny or Japanese collectibles is like $200-400. Which... as a weird Pokemon fan who wants these, very much hurts me. Especially as I had a decent time playing the 3DS Pokemon Rumble free-to-play game when I had absolutely nothing else but a pre-installed copy of Yokai Watch to play on my 2DS.

Man, the Amiibo craze was one of my most stressful but favorite memories as teen to look back on. I initially was going to pass on these when they were revealed, but once I saw how great they looked in stores I just got my collector's mindset to get them all. I was a bit late on the draw and by that time the rarity scarce and rumors of discontinuation started to get into me so I had to get them. I am not proud in the slightest of how some of how much I had to spend to get the ones I couldn't find anymore on eBay like Fox, Captain Falcon and Pit and for Wave 1's Holy Grails I remember setting up an German Amazon account and had those shipped to me in the U.S. once they restock there. I got lucky ordering a Little Mac from Gamestop's website. That was one of the rare ones down that I didn't need to buy from a reseller. One of my favorite memories from this was having my mom drive me around to several Targets and Toys R Us's looking around for any of the ones I was missing and eventually ending the day with picking up only Diddy Kong from a Gamestop. I only went for the Smash Bros. Line. I drew the line there and wasn't interested in anything else (besides Amiibo cards for Animal Crossing 9 years later). Now I have nearly all of them from Smash Bros. with any amiibo I bought after Smash Ultimate keeping them in the box rather than opening them up as soon as I got them. I even kept all the original packaging after my third one with the plastic blisters and it's all displayed on one of the walls in my room. Also got an in package Mario and Yoshi (my first two) to fill the space my original boxes would've been had I not thrown them away) and the Retro 3-pack in box because I had already ordered them loose from Amazon de.

I didn't get into amiibo until Best Buy had Peach, Donkey Kong, and Yoshi for $9 and it felt too cheap to let pass by. And that was the start of my addiction because I really loved collecting amiibo from that point. I got them at the perfect time because at the time, GameStop wanted out of the pre-owned Toys to Life market and amiibo was included in that. Their sale was Buy 1 Get 3 Free and my local stores were FLOODED with amiibo figures and I remember getting about 30-35 of them for about $75. Rare ones at the time like Charizard, Shulk, Sheik, and many others! To this day, I'm only missing one Smash amiibo with Terry Bogard and I haven't paid more than retail for any amiibo excluding Mega Yarn Yoshi since it never got a reprint but I got 2 of them for $200 and sold the sealed one for $140 to recoup those funds. My favorite memory from my amiibo collecting was I walked into Best Buy on my birthday just to see what deals they had when Gamers Club Unlocked was still going on and they had 20% off new games and about 10 minutes to closing in the game section, I saw a cart full of stuff to put back on the shelf and right on the top was a PRISTINE Smash Meta Knight amiibo, which at the time was still a Best Buy exclusive but was sold out 9 months past its release and was going for almost $100. I picked it up with super speed and was shaking while my brother was confused as to why. It was my holy Grail at the time.

I remember when Marth was rare and I found a bunch in a salvage store for $7 each brand new. I bought 1 like a civil man and kept it sealed for awhile. I did eventually cave and open because I wanted to use it, not to mention the value isn't really there anymore anyways. I was probably 13 or 14 at the time, so it's not like I had the funds to buy them all and resell them for some crazy mark up if I wanted to.

Regarding the Japanese eShop and paying through the NFC reader, on Wii U and new 3DS you used to be able to make a purchase with NFC train cards. One of the most well known ones is the Suica card as it’s what is used for an area such as Tokyo. You can prepay for a set route/period of time and also put cash on the card where you can use it on any supported train line and even some vending machines too. And if you have cash on it, you could choose to use it on a purchase if you have enough money. I still have a “Manaca” card from Aichi which has ¥90, but since it’s roughly less than a dollar, I never had a use for it myself as I could only use it for purchases and not adding more funds.

this video made me realize that the new version of Mario RPG could have given us a Gino amiibo so we actually have Gino merchandise since right now we do not at all have anything for this character. They even released a line of plushies when the original Mario RPG came out and that set excluded Gino. so we've never had official Gino merchandise this means we could have had one if we remembered that amiibo existed at all.

I went all in on Amiibo. I think, for me anyway, it was that they instantly felt classic. Like they were ripped right out of Smash Bros Melee (as they sorta were), and they had a secondary function, aside from looking cool, (though truthfully I never planned on opening them., the boxes seemed like the perfect place for them.. Keeps them free of dust, they are flashy, and have their names on them, for the obscure ones). I have to also admit that I bought some doubles of them so I could open and display/use them. So I have complete, and minty boxes, which wasn't easy when I had many of them shipped! It took a lot of returns and repurchases. Complete until Wave 7, plus the SMB line. But then I had ENOUGH!.. I was running out of space, and unfortunately I don't even have the place to display them. I have them all carefully packed in totes.. I even have soft tissue paper between them to keep any of the clear plastic from getting scratched. I'm a bit OCD when it comes to my collecting. I would be lying I'd I said I didn't enjoy some of the thrill of the hunt. 😁 -MattH

1:20:59 for those who are curious about what the Dark Souls Remastered amiibo is and don't know their Dark Souls 1 (don't worry, I understand, these games are absolutely not for everybody)... the Dark Souls amiibo is of a guy called Solaire (it might be spelt differently, but it's pronounced "soul-air"). in the game he worships the sun and is "looking for his own sun," whatever that means. that pose is called "praise the sun," and people usually use it when they succeed. you also learn it from Solaire. I think the only reason people praise the sun is because Solaire is a nice person in a game where you can count the number of nice NPCs on two hands (one depending on who you ask). anyways, unless you do a few very specific steps that are, in retrospect, pretty easy to achieve (just killing a hard to find passive critter that won't fight back), he gets corrupted by a creature similar to a Half-Life headcrab and you have to kill him. because Dark Souls. he's also just like, a normal enemy, and not even a boss. as for the... emote? people liked it so much and it became probably the most memorable symbol of Dark Souls to the point that it's now in Dark Souls 2 and 3. It's not in Bloodborne or Elden Ring though. tl;dr: that guy is Solaire, and he's praising the sun, which is like a wholesome version of the Fortnite Default Dance. oh, and also: the loot goblins in Diablo don't even look like that! that goblin is so much more cartoony... kinda wish they looked like that in the actual game

Great retrospective. It’s interesting to me to hear all that happen in the US. Here, in Switzerland, we didn’t have shop exclusivity and stock was okay-ish. There were some shortages, but didn’t last too long each time. By the way, about the Squid amiibo, it was also bundled with the game itself (maybe only in Europe, don’t know about the US). Okay, the 8-bit Mario Maker amiibo sold only with the system is ridiculous! We had it sold as a stand-alone or with the game.

Ah, amiibo collecting... those were the days of blowing out money to get a cool Nintendo figure that barely did anything! Yeah, believe it or not, my brother and I were a part of the amiibo craze back when Smash 3DS and Wii U launched. Since I got five of the N64 Crew (Mario, Link, Kirby, DK and Pikachu), I was waiting for what other kinds of 'miibo we could get. After getting the Mario Party 10 amiibo bundle and Smash Luigi, i think my big bro started to go a bit hog wild with getting many amiibo! He got me Shulk, Bowser Jr., Diddy Kong, the Super Mario versions of Peach, Yoshi, Bowser... Smash Pit came detached from his base... got the green Yarn Yoshi amiibo along with Wooly World. Splatoon amiibo were a big get, as well as the Smash Retro fighters. Me and big bro were getting amiibo left and right... and that meant we got into some right bull-honky. One time, my brother ordered the collector's edition of Mega Man Legacy Collection for 3DS that contains the gold Mega Man amiibo... but the shipment got hacked and brother had to cancel it. It took me till 2019 to get a Mega Man amiibo. Speaking of buying games just to get the amiibo, I was one of the poor saps who bought Chibi Robo Zip Lash just for the amiibo. It was so cool and adorable that i just had to have it... i really should have just gotten the amiibo alone on Amazon. In addition, we bought Zelda Twilight Princess HD for the awesome Wolf Link amiibo, got Pokkén Tournament's first run copy for the Shadow Mewtwo card... and that was about it really... afterwards, i got Waluigi, and Daisy back in 2016... and that was honestly it. Like i said, i got Mega Man in 2019, Waddle Dee in 2020... yeah... Nowadays, I'm not really that into amiibo collecting as i was back then. A lot of them just don't interest me these days. As of this writing, my lastest amiibo i got was the Super Mario series version of Donkey Kong. I don't have any interest in getting any of the DLC characters outside of the two I have... i might get Piranha Plant, K. Rool and Banjo and maybe Terry and Sora... but that would be it honestly. That and the fact that amiibo support has been a joke in some games also killed my interest. Like for whatever reason, Kirby and the Forgotten Land's amiibo function is just a pathetic bonus of healing item and star coins, which was a massive downgrade from Star Allies' function, which itself was a massive downgrade from Robobot's function. And the worst thing is... they regurgitated it for the Return to Dreamland remake! The nerve of Vanpool and Hal labs!

I've never really cared too much about the in-game functionality for amiibo. They're relatively high-quality figures for a reasonable price. Yes, the first couple waves of Smash were rough (especially the faces on more realistic characters), but nowadays the quality is great and they're fun collectables. Smash and Splatoon series are stand-outs, with the Zelda and Monster Hunter series also being extremely good.

one of my favorite amiibo memories has to be back in 2016 i passed up callie and marie amiibo in favor of buying zelda triforce heroes. i regretted that descision for literal years, cus i barely played triforce heroes. but last year around thanksgiving i went to new york, and when i was in the nintendo new york store i saw callie and marie on the shelf and knew i pass it up a second time cus id regret it forever. also got pearl and marina and steve and alex amiibo. i dont really collect amiibo since the college town i moved to doesnt really have any amiibo or anything but the nintendo ny store was crazy for amiibo

The only amiibo I went hard to get was the Mega Yarn Yoshi amiibo which came out on my 21st birthday. I was living at San Francisco State at the time. The nearest Toys R Us was in Emeryville across the Bay. I woke up at 5AM on the morning of my 21st birthday to take multiple buses to get to the Emeryville Toys R Us before it opened. I was the first person there because everyone else who got there before me decided to stay in their cars because it was cold. I got all those people to get out of their cars and brave the cold with me for about an hour until the store opened.

I honestly miss the early days of collecting Amiibo. I was a year out of high school and dropped out of college after my semester because I was dealing with severe depression. For months I barely even got out of bed but because of my love for Nintendo and Smash Bros, Amiibo somehow hooked me. I bought every figure I possibly could and did some crazy things to get the difficult ones. Drove 2 1/2 hours to pick up a Captain Falcon, camped put in front of Target 4 hours early for Rosalina, spent hours and hours refreshing websites (and set up extensions that notify you when a webpage changes) to get Lucario, camped outside of Gamestop for hours to be first in line to pre-order wave 4, etc. After getting gold Mario and a yarn Yoshi, I started slowing down and stopped caring about collecting them all. Amiibo were basically my life for a year and a half because it was the only thing that gave me any happiness and joy lol unfortunately I lost my job and sold a ton of them a few year back (which I regret) but I still have around 15 of them and I'd like to start picking up some of them again

I always thought amiibo should be an alternate way to download an actual DLC pack for a game. Like instead of paying $10 for a DLC pack, you could buy the $12.99 amiibo instead. They could even track if an amiibo key had been used before in their store to make sure the same one wasn't used twice to download the content on multiple consoles, hurting their resale value, but it would've been a great implementation, I think, to get the DLC you would've bought or were considering getting anyways, but you also got this physical figure almost as a sort of bonus for the slight premium

They're just fun. The small perks in games are nice, and admittedly while I don't like *having* to have a figure to do something in a game, I do think it adds value to the figure itself and makes it all the more worth collecting, but overall the figure itself is the main reason to get it. I just feel extra incentivized by the NFC functions. For me, my collection is primarily Skylanders. I have so many of them and I hope to increase my collection some more some day. But I do have some amiibo, and I love them. They're mostly the Animal Crossing amiibo, which I got because I'm a fan of the series and the quality of them is *astounding.* In my opinion, they are among the most well-designed and detailed figures out there. KK's guitar has a texture to it, Cyrus and Reese have ridges on their overalls, and the base of the figures is a cut-out of the terrain from the games. All-around *incredible* figures. But I also once picked up a Robin amiibo because I liked the design, long before I ever played and beat Awakening (by that time I was only a fan of Fates as it was my first and only FE game). It was one of my earliest amiibo, in fact. Now I have quite a few, but they're all safely tucked away with most of my stuff after a big move until I can get my living situation... well, _situated_ a bit better and find some room for them. I just wish I had a cheap and affordable display option for them. I want to have like elevated platforms so that the amiibo and Skylanders in the back (separately displayed, of course) have a height advantage over the ones in the front instead of just sitting in a crowd of figures next to each other, which doesn't look that great. But yeah... I treasure all of my figures. Unless I knew I could get a quick replacement, like I did with Nightfall when my nephew wanted it, I would never part with them. And not just because Skylanders have even *more* utility where they are actual playable characters with their save data stored on them outside of the Imaginators and 3DS games (where they let you save to the game/system).

In the 80s they released a Mario/Zelda cereal where the box was split in the middle with two skinny bags of cereal on either side. It was okay. For some reason they marketed both together like that for a little while. I had Mario/Zelda bedsheets, a comforter, and the most uncomfortable sleeping bag I've ever encountered with those designs on them.

As someone who owns like 80 amiibos although they are a neat collectible, they are sorely underutilized by Nintendo. Nintendo could have made a free to play game that required amiibos to use, they could include amiibo functionality in every Nintendo published game that offered some kind of item or reward, and they most certainly could have produced more for customers to buy instead of every new one selling out within minutes or hours!

Fire Emblem always had pretty big content locked behind Amiibo. Fates had 4 DLC characters and weapons all from previous games (hell it was the first time Marth had English voice acting), each with their own small side quests. Echoes had 2 unique dungeons with unique weapons, and the unique spell to summon a bunch of characters that were also in Smash. Warriors had two of the best weapons early-mid game in the game locked behind Amiibo (Specifically Chrom's Training Sword due to it's unique trait being a stronger version of the best skill in the game) Three Houses had the ridiculous Amiibo Gazebo which gives you overpowered items in New Game+ like a unique spell for Byleth and stat boosters. Even Engage will give you an extra Relay ticket every day, which on Maddening mode is one of the only ways to consistently grind if you want to. So ya, as a series it's definitely one of those that tends to lock some pretty big stuff behind Amiibo, I will say none of it is really required or limits the experience though (Three Houses' NG+ mode is SO much more broken with the Amiibo Gazebo though, it's one of the few ways to get stat caps in that game without hacking)

Code Name Steam still has one of my favorite uses of Amiibo; unlocking up to 4 new playable characters in that game, that are very different from the characters from the base game. Both Robin and Lucina are great playable characters there. I wished they re-released Code Name Steam n the Switch and added more Amiibo support for the others Fire Emblem amiibos.

As someone who recently researched Fire Emblem amiibo, I was hoping they’d mention Fates. THAT was arguably the best amiibo implementation; playable units (that were okay in-game), clothing, weapons, and unique dialogue. Unfortunately, Intelligent Systems got less innovative until Engage where it’s kind of coming back with costumes and music? Also, I agree! I wish more third-parties did stuff with amiibo. Immediately when Joker got announced for Smash, I was hoping that his amiibo would unlock something should The Royal get ported at the time. We eventually did get the The Royal, and nothing… could’ve added the “Beneath the Mask (Smash Remix)” as alternate music. The costume DLC already does that and The Phantom Strikers gave you “Take Over” for having a Smash save file. Lastly, I’m happy they at least mentioned Code Name: S.T.E.A.M’s compatibility cause that was both impressive and unnecessary early on in the amiibo lifetime! That and Style Savvy’s stuff was pretty cool alongside stuff like Yoshi’s Willy World and Mario Maker!

I wonder if Mario Odyssey's copious number of costumes were ever considered to be NFC unlockables. A downright strange amount of work for the developers for cosmetic rewards with no gameplay impact. If the Switch had performed more like the Wii U, where only a handful of games sold well, I could see them propping up the few safe bet titles with more NFC merchandise like amiibo and cards.

Been collecting them since day 1. I am a freak and keep the packaging for every one of them I’ve gotten. Just got the new totk Ganon and Zelda. Started reflecting and thought to myself “if you had told me 9 years ago when an bought Mario, Fox, Samus and Link along with Smash Wii U that I’d still be collecting them almost a decade later….” I know materialistic things like this aren’t eternal or anything, but the big collection I now have of them has been with me through multiple moves and tons of life changes, enough that I do feel an emotional connection to some of these lil guys. Early 2015 was a wild time to collect, the local GameStop was swamped constantly. I do miss that simpler time in my life sometimes.
