As someone who did the DigiPen Project Fun program almost every summer, (as well as being accepted into the college this coming fall) I can confirm it was pretty cool. I started doing it well past the point where they offered the Nintendo of America Tours, but it was a very fun program. They taught you basics of game development from a variety of different angles, like programming, art, etc. Also, almost all the counselors working there were Digipen students themselves, so you were able to learn and talk to people who were also learning stuff like this.
@TopMashu
@TopMashu 14 күн бұрын
I remember I did one of those Digipen summer programs when I was a kid. It was a bunch of university students teaching us basic game making and animation with the school software which I remember being decently sophisticated. We also got to tour NoA and buy discounted merch and games from the employee store which was neat.

33:55 The story behind this change is actually pretty sad. Jools Watsham is perhaps the most well known of the Renegade Kid devs, he's the one who dreamed up Mutant Mudds. There was another dev named Gregg Hargrove, the one most interested in making FPS games on handheld. He was actually working on an FPS for 3DS called Cult County, but before RK could fund it he passed away of pancreatic cancer.

I collected Nintendo Power throughout the early-mid '90s and one of the wildest things that I REALLY wish they'd kept up with was: they used to have short, single-chapters of comics starring Nintendo characters. There was a Mario, a Legend of Zelda, and a Metroid comic that all told a long-term story over the course of several months, and as a kid who used to read manuals for lore, it was SO COOL to have a more in-depth story to go with them.

when i was younger, i had a bunch of old nintendo power magazines from the second design of the magazine (around 2001, before the launch of the gba) all the way to 2007, so i have a lot of nostalgia for that era of nintendo power. i find it’s the main reason why i have such nostalgia for the gamecube and gba despite not really growing up with them.

My first issue of Nintendo Power I got from my friend was the October 1992 with Super Mario Kart cover, it was the magazine that made me want to get the SNES console! But I got my subscription of Nintendo Power around late 1995 when my school had Reader’s Digest fundraiser with yearly subscriptions of popular magazines at that time. I think it's really weird that he literally SAYS why this was his first one; his mom subscribed him to it because she saw it and thought he'd like it; but because Scott fans have this weird parasocial vibe to them, they have to make up a reason why he picked this specific issue out, because for some reason ya'll think he's fucking nuts for Sonic. Like yeah he has a lot of nostalgia for the series but ya'll act like he's keeping up on the modern IDW comic he loves Sonic so much when really he just likes playing the first level of the first three games as a kid (because he couldn't beat the second ones).

Review of an unreleased Gauntlet DS game reminds me of the N64 version of 40 Winks which Official Nintendo Magazine reviewed before N64 version was cancelled. It was released years later trough Kickstarter though. PS1 version of 40 Winks even featured a quote on the cover from the Official Nintendo Magazine review "Move over Mario."

I never read Nintendo Power, because we didn't grew up with Nintendo back in the day and I don't know if they ever issued them in Australia. I grew up with PC gaming, so I was more familiar with PC Powerplay back in the 90s and 2000s. I even remember when they used to have demo discs at Newsagents. One demo disc I remember fondly was the Xtreme Sports disc from 2003, which introduced me to a number of cool racing games, with one being a combat driving game, made by the same people who would later make the Bionic Commando remakes.

DUDE this was my first Nintendo power issue as well! My brother got the magazine from 2002-2005, then I decided to get the magazine starting in 2008 until about a year before the magazine ended. Still had a lot of fun reading NP each month

37:53 I actually ordered one in 2005 or so from the Nintendo Power ads. I have the Fairy Ocarina, but they also sold the Ocarina of Time as well. The one I own is Zelda-themed, as there is a triforce logo on the top just like the design in the game. I think the ones they sold years later might have had a different design. It came with a songbook that had a bunch of different tracks, some from Zelda, but then it had stuff like The Simpsons theme. It's unfortunately covered in dust, so I don't think I will play it, but it is neat to have. I don't remember if I ever got all that good at it, I think I was too young at the time to take it seriously, but I did try some of the songs.

God, I miss Nintendo Power. My first issue was volume 215 (I think), the one with Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. If it wasn't for them, I don't think I would be as into gaming as I am now. They introduced me to games I never would have played on my own. I would love to collect every issue someday. My mom scored a huge collection of some of the oldest issues from a former church pastor, who gave it to us when they moved, but I still have a long way to go. Also, I'm insulted you confused Professor Layton and the Last Time Travel, or the Unwound Future, as the former was its name in Japan, with the Last Specter. Those were two completely different games.

I read that magazine cover to cover tons of times back then - especially since, if I recall correctly, I didn't get a second issue until a few months later. i started getting the NP at volume 2.... and man that was COOL and what a time to be alive. i couldn't wait to get the next issue, read the reviews, new gameboy games, nes games, snes games, seeing the maps and tips and stories. i loved the cartoons and couldn't wait to get the next story. NP was fantastic because internet didn't exist and it was the only way to get maps and tips and secret. So sad that this will probably never happen again. but to be honest, i could really see a new console that combines 8 bits, 16 bits and 64 bits with real cartridge and hardware limitation (in otherwords, every console is not emulated but rather its own real hardware, clearly separated and NOT more powerful since limits is what creates creativity) and then release a new set of NP magasines as games come out with the same maps and tips

STL Ocarina has said a few times that a majority of their sales come from zelda fans, I've even ordered from them myself. It makes me smile to see that ad, and it definitely makes sense its there. I was so heartbroken when my ocarina broke during a move, maybe I'll grab another one, inspired by seeing that ad 😂

Did yours have the triforce design or did the later ones look more like in this advertisement? Because I don't know anybody else who ordered from them outside of me and my folks lol

I played Ninja Town when I was a kid. It was surprisingly a tower defense game where u battled demons. I remember beating it and having a lot of fun with it

Thanks. Now I feel old, because the SNES was the current Nintendo console when I was 5. I never had one, unfortunately.
