The gamepad was the best Nintendo controller ever. Fight me 😤 Too bad the console itself was kind of garbage. It was hard to develop for and it was way too underpowered for the amount of money they asked for it. The design is also very forgettable. Whenever you think of the Wii, you'll imagine the Wiimote, sure, but also the sleek and angular box with the disc reader LED that accompanied it. But nobody remembers the actual Wii U box, it really lacked any kind of personality.

I was just hanging out with my roommate, and for some reason I saw an opportunity to bring up the Wii U. Now, I'm getting over a cold, but I was so desperate to explain how it failed and the gamepad and the exclusive games that I kept talking and talking about it, even though after talking about it for long enough, my throat was in pain and I started breaking out into coughing fits and I could barely speak, BUT I JUST NEEDED TO KEEP EXPLAINING THE WII U, and I thought, "Is this what Scott feels like all the time?" This might just become my favourite video on KZbin. Wow, what a treat! I can't express how much I miss the Wii U and the 3DS/Wii U era. It will forever be my favourite console and era of Nintendo of all time. That time felt so warm, cosy, exciting, magical and wonderful. Nintendo put their heart and soul into this console - to this date, the Wii U has the greatest UI of a Nintendo console, period - and it breaks my heart that it never got the love it truly deserved. I suppose this will be perfect while I paint. Edit: I painted my living and dining room, waited for paint to dry, peeled the tape and put the curtains and furniture and there’s still 2 hours left 😂 I can’t believe it’s already been over a decade. I remember all of those E3’s.. 2010, 11, 12.. I bought the deluxe version first day and played the heck out of Nintendo Land and NSMBU. Even though there weren’t many games I was interested in launch, I used my Wii U gamepad as a tv remote, used it for Netflix (also watched shows on the gamepad from my drafting table and bathtub lol) and used the hell out of Wii Street U! I was SO sad when they shut it down. Overall, I still use my Wii U. It had a lot of fantastic first party and indie games. Now that I’ve hacked mine, I use it more than my Switch!

Honestly I love the Wii U. Along with the Wii, it was a huge part of a childhood. The marketing was terrible, but it’s still a console that I love. As a kid I was so excited for the Wii U and I absolutely loved it when I received it. I have so many memories playing it with my family. I never really realized how poorly it did as a console until many years later.

I have more nostalgia for the Wii U than the day my dad brought home a NES and the day I first played the Super Mario World demo at ToysRUs as a kid!! Due to really hard times and bankruptcy, I never got to grow up with an N64, GameCube or Wii. One evening I was telling the wife how nostalgic I was feeling about Super Mario games and the great memories. Soon after we picked up a pre-owned Wii U and some games! For the first time in years I was playing Mario Kart games, Super Mario games, I was playing great party games like Nintendo Land, Wii Party U, Wii Party, Mario Party 8-10, and having a truly remarkable time with my wife and kids!!! The entire library of Wii and Wii U games were in my hands. I went from Kirby Epic Yarn, to Yoshi's Woolly World, from Kirby Return to Dreamland to Pikmin 3, from Mario 3D World to Mario Galaxy I and II!!!! It was the Hooly Grail/Big Bang of gaming for me!!! I can never relive such a remarkable experience. I loved Mario Party 10 and still do!!!! A lot of the same charm from Nintendoland is on Wii Party U!!! I still play these great games with the kids and the wife!!!! I have every current gen console in the house, 7 Switches and 7 Wii Us too!!! I love the Wii U!! There are still games and experiences you cannot get on the Switch that the Wii U provides!! I love the gamepad, wish they brought back that unique style of gameplay!!! The Wii U is an amazing console with a lot of Nintendo charm!

To be fair to Nintendo being super adamant about the name Wii U and refusing to hear any criticism, they happen to do that a lot. Like more than you probably realize. Nintendo of America's marketing division begged Nintendo of Japan to let them market the black or silver Gamecube as the primary one with purple as an alternate color and NOJ completely refused. The Gamecube got mocked about being a "stupid purple lunchbox" its entire run here in the US. Reggie also tried really hard to not have Donkey Konga released in the US because he was convinced it would damage DK's brand if they didn't also have a core DK game for the Gamecube but NOJ denied him and forced it to release. The company just makes really stupid decisions and stands by them to an unwavering degree. They are very good at "The Emperor has no clothes" scenarios.
