80's VHS were really pricey across the board, not just Wrestling. You'd expect to pay $99 for Top Gun. This made the rental business look attractive.
@megamangamer9222
@megamangamer9222 2 жыл бұрын
VHS were not initially intended for sale to general public. In fact, Disney fought it for the longest time, as they feared piracy if that were to happen. This is why, as you mentioned VHS were so expensive initially. It was intended to be bought by Blockbuster, for example, and then rented to the end consumer. Over time, like any tech, it became more accessible, they realized the home market, and the prices came down. So yeah, it probably was $60 for WWF video at one time, and then eventually you could get them for $10.

2:35 - There was a time when VHS tapes were crazy expensive. It cost around $80 USD to buy movie releases on VHS in the early to mid 80s. It wasn't until around 87-88 when the prices got below $30. Not that crazy if that ad is from during the time when the prices were really high all around the industry. Based on the matches I bet this is from 84 / 85. so the price makes sense. Also, fun fact, Bruce Prichard mentioned in his podcast that the tapes were being made by a single company that just did porn and WWF videos.

In the 80s a lot of videos were that expensive and more so that only Video Rental Shops would be able to buy them, in a roundabout way making them rental store exclusive.

That and it was just a lot more expensive to make quality VHS tapes then. A whole different world than burning information onto discs. Unless u truly mass (And I mean mass, like tens of thousands or more) produced them, it was really expensive. They didn't mass produce their first several ventures, but once they did, and of course technology improved, the prices came down.

That was definitely action figure Snuka getting kicked in the balls by action figure Piper. Also that Hogan painting ad was a "Right Guard" deodorant campaign. The tagline was "Anything less would be uncivilized". It was a big campaign in its dad. Hogan, former NBA basketball player Charles Barkley and a few others were all spokesmen for this advertisement

This video is BRILL, mate. Those autographed photos were prints. I know because I ordered the Ric Flair one. Many years later, I saw him at a studio I was working at... I believe he was shooting a commercial for something WWE related. I walked up to him during a break in the shooting and told him that when I was a kid, I ordered that picture and was disappointed with my purchase. We both laughed, he made some cracks about Vince and signed an autograph for me and we got a photo. Like many of your subs, I'd as well, love to see more vids like this. Keep up the smashing work!!!

I purchased that "autographed" 4 pack at the second WWF show I ever attended in May 1992. They are 100% scanned autographs but I had them hanging in my room anyway lol. I also got that Columbia House WM video. I watched it and returned it because my mom didn't want to pay for that monthly service lol. The video didn't have anything special on it. WM 1 main event and the WM 2 battle royal are the only things I remember from it.

There was a time when all Video tapes were very expensive to buy because, mostly, tapes were rented back in the 80's. It wasn't until the late 80's, early 90's that tapes started being cheap to buy. When I first bought a movie, it was The Shining and my dad bought it for me as a kid and it was 50 dollars. Then movies started being marketed for, not only rental, but sales too; then the price dropped dramatically, so I can see WWF tapes costing this much at one point in the 80's for sure.

When wrestling companies released tapes of PPV shows they charged as much as it was to actually order it on PPV. I think they thought they had to because if they charged any less people might just wait for the tape release instead of ordering PPV. Back in the '80's, VHS tapes were EXTREMELY expensive to buy! That Steamboat video was actually pretty cheap for the time. They tended to average close to 100 bucks! By the mid-90's, they got down to closer to twenty bucks, since they were producing them cheaper.

Stephanie and Shane McMahon were used to model items in the WWF catalogue, Stephen H Taylor and Tom Buchanan did the photography.

I got a hulk and savage autograph photo from wwf magazine way back when. They were legit (from what I got at least. I also live in upstate NY; a 3 hour drive from Stanford) but man. I spent so much birthday and Christmas Monday off that rag....
