Wrestling Bios Presents - The Story of Papa Shango in WWF
While Charles Wright would eventually become the very popular Godfather character in the WWE, he had a few bumps along the road. Before becoming the Godfather, Charles portrayed Kama, and before Kama, Charles was known as Papa Shango.
Papa Shango is well remembered among wrestling fans but sometimes not for the right reasons. During the character's active years, the WWF was producing family friendly entertainment, and the character of Papa Shango was like a real life cartoon villain. While we may laugh at the segments featuring Papa Shango and The Ultimate Warrior, the fact that the segments are still remembered speaks volumes.
Papa Shango didn't capture a single title during his WWF run, and Charles Wright would get repackaged twice over before finding success, but Papa Shango still holds a place in wrestling history. This mini documentary from Wrestling Bios looks at Papa Shango in the WWF.
Topics covered include:
Charles Wright working as The Soultaker in USWA
Sir Charles in the WWF
The Papa Shango WWF Debut
WrestleMania 8 and Papa Shango's involvement with the finish
Ultimate Warrior vs Papa Shango and "The Curse"
Bret Hart vs Papa Shango
The end of the Papa Shango gimmick and what was next for Charles Wright
Much More!

I completely disagree with everyone who says that “cartooney” like characters ruined WWE in the early 90s. It was these goofy like characters that attracted me to wrestling as a kid growing up. I was legitimately scared of Papa Shango and bought in to his entire gimmick. All of the super hero / super villain characters are what WWE is missing today. Steroids, huge muscles, face paint, costumes, larger than life, circus freak show type characters is what made WWE get over in the 80/90s period. Wresting is fake, therefore so should the characters be. There needs to be a fine balance of goofy gimmicks and pro wrestling characters. I thought the warrior papa shango angle was incredible and again bought into it as a kid, I thought it was a good angle. I loved his gimmick when I was 5 and love it even more now that I’m 35.

Why can't a black man play a scary wrestler and it's corny and a white guy (albeit I love love love Undertaker) can play a wrestler and everyone loves it. Papa Shango was scarier than the Undertaker. I just didn't personally think he was as good of an in-ring performer while playing that gimmick. Undertaker also entertained during his matches and kept up aspects of the gimmick. Shango kind of did the character during entrances and dropped everything once he performed in the ring.

BRUH! I don't know what the hell you were watching but Papa Shango was one of the best characters during his time in the wwf. His matches with the Ultimate Warrior, Tatanka, Bret Hart, and The Undertaker were LEGENDARY! Those characters made the WWF GREAT! The WWF compared to the WWE now there's no comparison. The WWE is absolutely TERRIBLE now. You can see it jus in the ratings and fan reactions. I've seen lately where the wwe has to edit out complete sections of arenas that are empty. Back in the day WWF events would sell out in an hour. Now they have to discount tickets jus to get rid of them.

Thinking back, I have fond memories of Papa Shango.. I was 5 in 1992, so when he cast a spell on the Ultimate Warrior and he started throwing up, I almost sh*t myself.. I was deathly afraid of Shango cause at that age I figured, if he can do that to the Warrior, wtf can he do to me?! Lmao.. From that point on, any time my Father would look for WWF tickets, I made him make sure Papa Shango wasn't wrestling 😂 90-92 were my first real memories of wrestling and I was OBSESSED! So all of these storylines were great to me lol.. I recorded Summerslam 1991 and Wrestlemania 8 and watched them a million times.. Now I see the Hogan Warrior vs Sgt Slaughters crew with Sid Justice as special guest referee ripped apart.. Same as Sid Justice vs Hogan, but I love them because I was obsessed with them growing up.. I guess it's all about age and perspective at the time 🤷🏻‍♂️ Anyway, just came across this channel today and I've watched 10 videos already.. Amazing content!

I loved Papa Shango's character. I do agree that the WWE shouldn't have jobbed him out as much as they did. I mean Vince loves monsters and giving them pushes. And at 6'6 and 330lbs Charles Wright was just that. I do feel they dropped the ball with this character and the reason the Godfather go over so well. Is because Charles actually runs a string of strip clubs out in Las Vegas. So this was FAR more in his "element" and him being himself. Just like Mark Calaway did when he portrayed his "American Badass" Undertaker gimmick. That was the closest to his real life character and he even went on record stating that as a fact. Whatever the case, i always loved Papa Shango but they could have done A LOT more with that character.

Exactly. The character gimmicks and crazy angles are what made wrestling interesting. We had clowns, barbers, rock stars, the undead etc. Now everyone just goes by their regular plain old character name with no depth at all. They look like default characters from a video game! No crazy haircuts or off the wall attire. They look like a bunch of jobbers out there and about as memorable. At least Bray Wyatt is doing something outside the box with his fiend character.

He actually scared me at the time, I really was scared for the Ultimate Warrior I remember. He just looked so real, that's credit to Charles Wright for using authentic props and stuff. I was a kid so I bought into everything wrestling back then. I liked Papa Shango, and I've never met anyone who didn't so I don't know who these fan are that he didn't go over well with.

Love the channel. This video had way to many opinions that werent really an actual recounting of the events. Hindsight is important but the idea of a bio is far more unique than random thoughts on wrestling gimmicks which are a dime a dozen.

actually papa shango was great and i loved this gimmick. a huge powerhouse brawling around, creepy looking, skulls, smoke... i mean, such a badass idea for a character. tbh, papa shango is my fave gimmick out of all the charles wright stuff.

The New Generation Era was one of the best in wrestling. The Papa Shango gimmick was cool, but McMahon used him as cannon-fodder for the other superstars.

True new generation attitude era of wrestling were raw as hell. This guy was creppy and buffed up as a kid it scared me more than undertaker or sting or kanes gimmicks this character reminded of the roger 007 live free or die this wrestling gimmick

I loved this character! Okay, I was a kid. But the thought that someone could make Warrior sick, when he was pretty much an invincible character, was scary! The promo with black liquid coming out of his head was genius. The crowd went silent!

To this day, I LOVE the Papa Shango character. I really find the direction wrestling went, and especially now, kind of... boring. I LOVED the outrageous comic book feel of wrestling. The more goofy and comic book it got, the more I loved it. But unfortunately, wrestling moved in the direction of fans who, "Just want to see people fight rather than gimmicks or storylines." in order to retain that portion of the audience. This is one of the reasons that I really didn't like WCW. They, for the most part, didn't have comic book characters, and everyone wrestled under normal names. I didn't want to see "Mark Calloway vs Mick Foley". I wanted to see "The Undertaker vs Mankind". Nowadays, wrestling is in that exact place that bores the hell out of me. They moved in the direction of fans who wanted to treat wrestling as a sporting event, and not as a comic book, action show. Boring. This is why indy wrestling, like Chikara is such a breath of fresh air for me. Frankly, the days when The Undertaker flew around the arena like Peter Pan, or when Paul Bearer opened the Urn and light and smoke came out, summoning the Undertaker. And of course that time when Kane was able to summon lightning, from the sky, to blast and set fire to that camera man at ringside, was, in my opinion, the best things I had ever seen in wrestling.
