People forget what a great swimmer Armstrong was as a youth before he ever got involved in triathlon around age 15. That feel for the water and basic technique doesn't go away, which is why he was able to resume training and come out of the water here within seconds of the lead.

Lance is beast!! He is probably the greatest athlete of all time. The haters calling him a fraud have no idea just how ridiculously strong you have to be to win one Tour de France, never mind seven!! I raced bikes for 10 years and I've never come remotely close to hurting as much as I did to hang on to some blistering breakaways since I quit racing. So here you have it, he can handily beat everyone 'clean' in a world class triathlon as well as doped (as they all were back then) in arguably the most gruelling professional sport in the world.

It is easy to forget how talented and driven this guy is, even at 16 Lance was beating 25 and 30 year old pro triathletes. He was unlucky to be in an era of cycling where everyone doped, it overshadowed how good he really was because people think that he won only because he cheated. If everyone including lance were clean he still would have won and people that know pro cycling well all admit that Lance is still an all time great if not the greatest of all time.
@Big_Island_Boi
@Big_Island_Boi Жыл бұрын
Uh... no. I know pro-cycling plenty well and I do not consider Armstrong either great in any way--aside from perhaps the greatest cock-sucking douchebag cheating pro cyclist in the history of the sport. He is a quintessential narcissist, a liar, a bully, a fraud, a thief. He's a legend alright... but the legend is about how NOT to act as a professional athlete... or as a human being. He didn't cheat to win just once... he did it over and over and over again--robbing the Tour de France of SEVEN years of winners. That scar will be on the sport forever.
@howdyl6456

I mostly agree, but I doubt he would still win without doping. The reason is his natural red blood cells level was low which made him a hyper responder to blood doping. Blood doping gave him a bigger advantage than the others

Livestrong is a positive message. It's personal. It's the day to day. This is the true gift of Lance Armstrong. He is not responsible for how you play the game or the expectations required of the endorsers or the bar that the sport itself raises on each individual athlete. The blame should be shared by all.

That's my point exactly. That's why the law is so important here. The law is the standard and the standard was the drug test which all cyclist were required to take. According to the law, every cyclist that didn't pop positive was clean which included Lance Armstrong. Just because he confessed doesn't change the fact that he met the standard. The standard needs to be looked at, not the athletes who work within them. The problem is with the anti doping agency. They need to get their crap together

I used to be a die hard fan of Lance. Not anymore. I don't talk down on him as I don't have the right to do so. When he was doping, all the other top riders were on drugs so it was a level playing field in that respect. But the biggest difference is that Lance really did wage a brutal war on anyone who questioned his honesty. Many of those people were no saints either and were just looking for their 15 minutes of fame by trying to pull Lance down, I'll give you that. But still it was a very nasty business from him indeed, he pretty much tried everything to ruin those people's lives. I still regard him as an exceptionally talented and amazing athlete, nobody in their right minds would question that. I just lost my respect for him as a decent human being.

Richard Serban Good summary. I would add that when a lie has gotten as big as it did (almost considered a god amongst men, fighting cancer, livestrong etc) it becomes almost impossible to tell the whole truth, and you would do almost anything in order to maintain the lie. Cant say most men wouldn't have done the same, although it takes a "sociopathic" personality to get to that stage in the first place.

Carbon, I get what you are saying, but as TheSteninbitt wrote, he was a sociopath who tried to stop his lie from getting out, so he actively tried to bully those who were trying to tell the truth. I cant say who started their side first, Lance being a bully and trying to destroy lives or those who were telling their story, but the thing of it is, he was in the wrong, so he should have just admitted it and used "EVERYONE was doping" as an argument. I already knew that everyone was, so I would have supported him, and other people like me, if he would have simply said "Yeah, you got me. I doped like a MFer, and this is how I did it."

Armstrong clearly has some great genetic advantages. His oversized heart can beat over 200 times a minute and thus pump an extraordinarily large volume of blood and oxygen to his legs
@BeanyOwns
@BeanyOwns 4 жыл бұрын
Correct me if I'm wrong but surely having a larger heart would mean less beats per minute, as each heart beat is more efficient and can pump more blood around the body? Isn't that why endurance athletes tend to have extremely low resting heart rate?

For LA it was all about him first team last and sure he cycled but was he truly into cycling like the other guys were as most of them would only do cycling. I think Lance was a triathlete and to be a great cyclist at the pro level he had to resort to drugs and boosting to win. Until he got cancer and lost weight he was not really up there in the top end. I believe that the loss of weight and the drugs gave him the edge in pro cycling.

Lance Armstrong legendary regardless of what went down, the fact that some racers did not dope shows that he does not deserve his accolades but his work ethic and drive should be appreciated from one athlete to another. If it takes an edge to beat the elite, so be it...because on those dates he was the very best amongst the cheating elite. livestrong and carry on. SUPER.

Armstrong also harmed the careers of those who would not take steroids, like Frankie Andreu and Filippo Simeoni, by publicly impugning their integrity, and also behind the scenes, by discouraging sponsors and investors from supporting their careers. He wasn't just quietly cheating. He was also actively attacking anyone who tried to tell the truth.

The true gift of LA? It's to teach that one can accomplish great things while being a lesser human being; it's to demonstrate that one can both unfailingly inspire some and viciously malign others; it's to reveal that one can be both amazingly selfless and selfish altogether. Everything on a grand scale for Lance. Doesn't make him a bigger man though.

Alright, haven't you all (commenters) beaten this to death already? Ok, Armstrong doped, but let's put some things into perspective: 1) You and I probably weren't professional cyclists in the early 2000s. We have no real bearing or gauge on the scale and pressure of doping in this time other than the testimony and confessions of the riders and teams which experienced it. 1b) There is good ground to assume most cyclists in this era were doping, the best example being 1998, the 'Tour du Dopage'. 2) He doped in cycling. Here we are now in triathlon, and I, despite never supporting Armstrong, am quite disappointed in the way some people are reacting. Unless or until there is some kind of proof that Armstrong is doping still, his tri results are completely valid and respectable. 3) A kind of double standard is being set in the Armstrong hate comments, in that nobody really had or has much argument about Ullrich, Vinokourov, Contador, E. Merckx, and many other famous cyclists who doped in their career.

The difference between Armstrong those other guys was he used his position to intimidate and damaged people lives. I liked Armstrong, until I read about how he treated the people trying to tell the truth. You should read how he fucked over Greg LeMond, the only American to legitimately win the Tour de France. The man is a national disgrace, not as much over the doping, as to his unethical behavior and conduct toward others.
