Ok Loomers! It's time to dive into the surprisingly complicated topic of when to get loom. Besides just looking at how large of an effect it has against a variety of animals and units, I ran the numbers on how big of an effect getting it too early can have on an early economy. It was a surprising amount!

I would recommend always building a house with each boar vill, and immediately after clicking castle age as getting housed early on is particularly painful. Getting housed at 45 vills with 3tc is quite common but not that bad as you can use the extra resources to pick up wheel.

Thank you for the informative video, Spirit. @6:05, I think you should have mentioned that the delay is less only if you find the sheep within the first 5 seconds. By the time the sheep comes under the TC, a player using the Chinese civ would eventually already have had at least 5 seconds of idle TC time in the beginning (post loom,because the food gathering doesn't start on time), further delayed depending on how much time it takes to find the sheep, and how far they are, and also, if they aren't behind a cliff or a thin, long line of trees (happened in HD, often). I've been doing it wrong all this time, researching loom after the 4th villager gets created. I must have been trailing by 300 resources at least, by the time i clicked up to feudal. xD Noob mistakes. Shall not happen again. Thank you, SOTL for showing me the correct way.

I hope you can make a video about walling/sim city at some point. It's definitely something I need to work on as someone only just getting into the game competitively. Knowing where to wall and when is not always obvious, and building defensive towers etc is also something I'm unsure about.

Maybe I can help you out... Actual walling with palisades is something you want to minimize. Definitely make "walls" with buildings that you would already need to make, but actual walling takes lots of villager time that could go to collecting resources. Instead, have the extra resources that you would save from keeping your bills on farms or lumber and use that to make military to attack early if possible. The best defense is a strong offense in aoe2. If you do wall, make it minimal and as close to your base as possible to achieve its usefulness so that: 1) your villagers aren't spending a ton of time walking, and 2) you can reinforce or repair a wall quickly if it is going to be breached. It's okay if it feels claustrophobic early on... you can always delete walls later as your base expands. The same logic applies to towers. They take alot of resources (125 stone +50 wood) but are completely immobile, so defensively it can only guard one area while your opponent's military can move to other areas to hit your economy. It's far better to just have your own military to defend/counter attack. Even if you are just defending, your own military can chase down an enemy army while a tower cannot. Even more import, using 125 stone means you can't afford an extra town center when you get to castle age unless you send villagers to mine stone. That then creates an additional problem of villagers taken away from high value resource collection like food/wood (i.e. resources that can be used for lots of different things or help you get to castle age) to collect stone, which has VERY limited use and only provides a large benefit once you have ALOT of it (relatively speaking). Once an opponent starts relying on towers, I can almost always count on getting to castle age more quickly because I know their economy is not setup to advance as quickly as mine, and then I can just take out those towers with castle age units anyway. Of course there are some exceptions to this logic for very specific builds (like Spanish tower rush into fast-castle and conqs), but good baseline strategy limits towers and walls. Hope that helps

@@emerson685 So yes, I'm obviously aware from any logical RTS standpoint that building defensive structures is something one wants to minimise since it's a resource sink that doesn't necessarily have returns that make them worthwhile. But what I'm more specifically referring to is the kind of early feudal pressure or castle age attacks that often straight up kill me/my partner (primarily playing 2v2s). And we're talking from the Hard AI, which we've been able to beat, but primarily when a wall keeps them away from doing damage before our units can respond, a well placed tower does enough to hold off some early archer pressure or a crossbow timing, and a quick castle is key to turning the economy into an even and eventually positive trade. That's where the start of my line of questioning began, anyhow. We've come from a background of fairly good (diamond-master) level Starcraft II, so the fundamentals of sim city and resource min/maxing are plenty familiar to us - but we're finding that a tower is one of the main ways to all but ensure we don't die, in order to get into the lategame where we can continue to refine our macro/fundamentals and then win the game - which we usually do, once we're past castles and able to each get into Imperial in good time. The intention being to continue improving until we can consistently beat the Extreme AI - without need for towers etc - and then go into competitive ranked games. We both enjoy economy driven, macro games over rushes or cheeses - we do like doing small pressures etc and getting out on the map, building advanced castles/production etc and asserting dominance. My partner likes to boom really hard, I like to maximise military efficiency - so he'll often go over 120-130 villagers of a 200/200 pop whereas I'll seldom break 100, usually hitting around 80=90. Since it's 2v2, we do gradually increase the number of trade carts we have going throughout the later stages of the game. I have to bully him into taking relics, and usually I end up with 2-4 and he's lucky to get 1, but with those extra gold sources we use markets extensively to sell and buy resources a lot - which I'm not sure is a good thing or a bad thing, but I figure if we spend 125 stone on a tower, it's better to get into castle and buy a couple hundred stone to afford extra TCs and a Castle rather than investing additional villagers/resources onto extra stone mining and the stone mining tech (is it fair to say that we shouldn't rush out both the gold and stone mining techs the second we hit Feudal? How about the wood and farm techs? I've watched the video on Wheelbarrow/Hand Cart, already, and these are the questions I'm forever stuck with...) I've been walling off the areas that are leading to the exposed side of my base, farthest from my ally, and walling at the point that is narrowest, so it's cheapest to build. I tend to have quite a high wood float going into Feudal/Castle a lot of the time, depending on who I'm playing, so spending that wood on palisades doesn't seem to be a problem for me - though another thing I'm unsure of is when to add additional production and how many, i.e., when to turn 1 Archery Range into 3, 3 into 6, and so on - I then tend to get a tower in a good spot covering the front of my base and position my army/rally point to cover the other way in, nearest to my ally, so we can react to help each other out. More often than not, our armies on their own - without any expense on walling or towers - are insufficient either in size or compositon or both to deal with what comes at us. At times, I've scouted multiple garrisoned Archery Ranges in early Feudal, and correctly predicted the archer rush, and churned out skirmishers to deal with it quite well - then the other guy, who has hit Castle already (while ours are on a big delay as we work on getting the units out, upgrading, avoiding being housed, and continuing villager production) comes in with knights and cleans up. Maybe there's just particular 2v2 build order combinations that we need to learn and learn how to defend properly. But avoiding dying in 60% of games at the moment is very hard to do without building defences - and I wish I could avoid having to do so. There's also occasions where I've 'walled' the main entrance to my town with my produciton etc and they wipe my army and just camp the units spawning out of it - even if I recognise I can't beat the army and don't engage it, I lose too much coming out of the buildings (even with the rally point correct) and they chunk it down pretty fast. If I'm down a solid number of archers/skirms or what have you, should I grab villagers (presuming Loom) and push out asap with them tanking to try and deal with it as quickly as possible? Or just get as many units out as I can and let my buildings die, building replacements in the back, and using my army/TC to defend as much as I can? (Though I have to remember every time to not just take my first wood at the biggest/nearest forest, and instead get the one farthest away from the enemy, since too often their pressure arrives and my lumber line is endangered). I see you've dumped the intro. It's what got me hooked way back in the day when you were just building your audience up, but I kinda feel your vids are now better without it. @Spiritofthelaw Tip for next video: what is the best strategy if you are housed in DA? Like put 1 or 2 vil to build and reseach loom earlier, build house with all 6 shepards / all 3/4 lumberjacks and idle the TC but get next vil faster.

Hey spirit, I counted out the hits by the boar when you said it took 4 for vil without loom and 7 for one with. There were 8 animations for the one vil with loom I thought

Yeah, the attack animation is often faster than the actual attacks. Villagers are actually unusually close if it's a 8:7 ratio. It's much more disconnected with others (rams come to mind)

Another problem with looming late is that you'll have 2x(number of boar) villagers with significantly less hp than they would have had with loom. That is unless the boar gets immobilized by the terrain, it may also attack the new attackers reducing their hp at a higher rate. This makes an opponent scout rush more effective since there are more villiagers with a greater reduction of HP. So the value of losing 100-something dark age collection is a bit overstated as a justification for looming later. And most people often have too much of one resource or another anyway after feudaling. Learning how to balance resources is more important imo than looming later.
