I always liked "Eureka" but of course as @Mike T stated, SyFy channel cancels everything I like too. I think they simply cancel when a series succeeds and the actors want raises. It's probably cheaper to cancel a series and create new shows expecting for them to only run a couple of seasons than give the people their deserved raises. (Just a thought)

BTW if you haven't considered reading the books yet and you're a fan of really well-built fictional universes, I highly recommend it. The audiobook narrator is fantastic if that's your jam, too. The show does a fantastic job of adding to the books while staying faithful to the tone and characters for the most part, but the books add so much more.

12 Monkey is better. Plain and simple. Though I do really like The Expanse it isn't very rewatchable because it doesn't have much depth. The attention to the science is very good apart from the crazy Epstein drive, and disappointingly you can't just spin up asteroids, which spoils a dream I have had since I first read about this stuff in Larry Niven's SF about belters.

BSG IMHO is the best modern sci-fi tv series with the Expanse second. STO and STNG are legend when it comes to sci-fi tv. Books, on the other hand, I have not found a series in this genre I've enjoyed more than The Expanse!

Zachary Read ... honestly, I still have yet to see battlestar gallactica. No real reason why I haven’t... didn’t have cable back when it originally aired, and, just haven’t gotten around to checking it out yet. I’m sure I’ll get to it eventually. Probably soon In fact... but I actually have heard some negative things about it from a couple people, so I’m just about 100% sure that it will fail to knock out The Expanse for my personal #1 spot. And yeah, The Expanse books really are amazing, and one thing I love about the Book to TV adaptation is how much they DON’T fuck up the books in the process of adapting it to screen, and in some areas even IMPROVE parts of the storytelling and character development. Basically the exact opposite of what Game of Thrones did by going off-book and taking the author’s IP and going off in their own direction... and the reason why they pulled it off so well and avoided the pitfalls of productions like GoT, is twofold... 1) they have producers and showrunners who actually are fans of the books and actually respect the books and want to do right by them and do them justice... and 2) They actually have the AUTHORS of the original material (aka James S. A. Corey (which is actually the pseudonym or “pen name” of two people)) in the freaking writer’s room and full-on part of the writing team... in fact they’ve actually said they see the show as a sort of rare opportunity to be able to go back and do a rewrite, or a sort of 2.0 draft of the original books and sort of edit them and fix things from the books that they wish they could have done the first time around now that the book has been out for quite a while and they’ve had time to sit with the story and digest them and approach them at a fresh angle... which, in the end, makes for an even better and more refined final product for the on-screen version of the story, instead of a bastardized version of the author’s original vision and intention which most adaptations from book to screen end up turning into. Exactly why Good Omens turned out so fantastic... because not only was Neil Gaiman the freakin showrunner of the series, but he was the sole writer for every single episode!!! Hollywood should wise up and start hiring the writers of the original works their adapting to make to film or TV versions of their works! I can’t friggin WAIT to see Ilus (aka New Terra) in Season 4... the trailers look AMAZING and it was one of my top 3 of the book series! Edit: one very small example of how they improved the story from the books to the TV series version is a very tiny edit, but had a huge effect on the story IMO: ...in the book, when the Canterbury get the distress call from the Scopuli which the first tilt of the domino that sets the whole story in motion, in the book, the captain of the Canterbury simply says, “Welp!... The law is that we logged the distress call, and since we’re the closest ship, we’re obligated to go to their aid and check out the situation, so so much for our “on-time” delivery bonus for our shipment of ice-water from Saturn’s rings” and that’s that and they simply go out there to check it out and the events unfold... Now I’m THE SHOW, the writers saw the opportunity to use that situation to not only make a much more dynamic, interesting, and dramatic situation, but to also use it as a way to really add to Holden’s character development very early on... in the show, the captain says, “Fuck this, we’ve got an “on-time delivery bonus” waiting for us and I don’t think anyone here actually wants to add to our mission time, let alone lose that bonus... so we’re going to ignore this call, pretend we never hear it, erase it, and scrub any evidence that we logged the distress call from our system”... and everyone is for the most part n agreement with that decision... then in the middle of the night Holden actually decides to listen to the actual contents of the distress call... he hears Julie Mao’s voice saying, “Please! Anybody out there! Please help me!”... and not only does he show his character of playing the hero and the Good Samaritan and the person who tries to do the right thing early on by actually logging the distress call so that they legally HAVE to go out to investigate the distress call, but that one simple act is the cause of EVERYTHING that happens from that moment onward... from causing the entirety of his crew to be murdered when the Cant is nuked, to causing a full-on inter-system WAR between Earth, Mars, and The Belt... to so many other effects from that one action, large and small. And the whole rest of the show is Holden trying to basically fix the fallout and find personal redemption for this one action that starts an escalating chain of events that are increasingly catastrophic. He is constantly trying to fix his mistakes by doing what he sees as the right thing and they almost always end up making things worse and further out of his control. This is a great example that just goes to show how one extremely tiny, seemingly insignificant change to the story can cause a dramatic difference to both characterization and over-arcing story and motif.

I'm glad someone else watched Dark. it is fascinating from the very beginning and I'm hoping for a 3rd season. Here's a few I've caught, maybe you've covered them already: Netflix The Rain - French - Teen post-plague apocalypse . Convoluted and engaging Nightflyers - Syfy, probably Canadian - Hard literary science fiction. No sequels please. George R.R. Martin's novella ends that way - grimdark. Glitch- Australian - Living dead, not zombies, the protagonists are OK except they've been dead for quite awhile Black Spot - French - Supernatural happenings in the forest - highly recommended. 3rd season? I doubt it. Kingdom - Korean -Medieval zombies and palace intrigue . Can't wait for season 2. Cleverman - Australian - Aboriginal super beings oppressed by Fascist white government. Pointed racial context. Cells at Work! - Japanese anime - Starring red and white blood cells, cute little platelets and various germs and virii. Plausibly medically true-ish . A lot of fun - like Moyashimon. Special mention because it's not really science fiction - Ultraviolet - Polish - Amateur cyber detectives solve crimes faster than the police. Best ensemble cast on television bar none. Love the twins. Amazon Prime Made in Abyss -Japanese anime - Very odd and disturbing. Children are forced to descend into a never-ending pit that mutates them . Fortitude - I think Canadian- Very strange doings in the arctic. Michael Gambon stars in 1st season, Stanley Tucci 2nd. The Kettering Incident - Australian - Time travel? Cloning? Only one season so I'll never know.

The OA is hands down my favourite show. It is so unlike any other television show and well worth the watch even though we may never get to see the truth at the centre of the labyrinth/puzzle that Brit and Zal (absolute geniuses!) have planned out. The parallels, clues and Easter eggs throughout the show had me watching it all the way through several times. Also glad to see The Expanse on this list I thoroughly enjoyed that show also.

The problem with half these shows, is that their on paid subscription services. Which is a less popular way of television show viewing. Because it's way more expensive, than cable or satellite TV. The paid sub services may have had a chance at being the future of television show viewing, but seeing how the field is growing and becoming more crowded. This makes every channel and studio, wanting exclusivity of its IP. So everyone is asking for a $10-$20 monthly fee, and when you have 30 possible services to get your expected to pay out $300-$600 per month, just to have access to all the available shows. This is unrealistic expectations for the average family. The average family income does not have that much extra money for frivolous things. This means they have to chose between a cable or satellite, or internet services. Seeing how cable is about $100-$200 per month for 150+ channels, satellite about the same or less. Then the internet services, $300-$600 for about 30 channel services. It's clear that cable and satellite is a better choice for you dollar. And seeing how Disney+ service is up and running, and Disney has been buying up as much IP as it can, for the exclusivity of its services. They are single handedly making services like Netflix and Hulu, kind of useless. They will have a smaller and smaller library of movies and shows. And it becomes less practical, because of the ever changing line up of shows from year to year on each channel service. So buying a service for a particular show today is fine, but when the show ends, or is cancelled, that paid service does make sense any more. And the viewer is expected to change services from month to month. And this makes it way more difficult for the services themselves, because depending on the successes of their shows, they may have viewers coming and going from the service, and this will cause a high and low income flow. Which will make them less likely to risk money on groundbreaking entertainment, so the quality of shows will lower, the quantity of shows will be limited. And if the viewer feels that they are not getting a good value for their buck, they will take their bucks elsewhere. When the services were limited to 1 or 2 main services, and a large library of movies and shows to choose from, it makes sense. This is why Netflix became a popular service. But know everyone is coming for a piece of the pie. The library is dwindling down, and too many services asking for $10-$20 per month, the whole idea is falling apart. The reason cable and satellite has been successful for decades, is because of the concept of 1 platform with many services for 1 price. It would have failed miserably if they charged by the channel. The internet services might have a chance, if the all centered around a single media service, who offers a packaged deal for a lower price. But seeing how the studios are leaving cable, for the internet, and offering internet only exclusive shows, they are motivated by greed, and have no desire to be re-branded into a cable like package deal. They think that people will buy their over priced services for exclusivity. And they will get to make more money, than they get from cable. But when there becomes more and more services, the people will have to choose the ones who have the better choices of shows, and what their money allows. Which means even a great show may fail, if it's on the wrong service, or is not bring viewers in. Netflix is a good start to the centralized internet services, but it's dying, because of service exclusivity, in an ever growing field. If these shows had been on cable and internet services, they could have been offered to a much bigger viewership, but exclusivity limited it to only people who have extra money for the services. Being on both could have made them a more successful show.

I wish that the book 'do android dream of electric sheep' was made into a netflix series - deckard is a completely different man and the tone and setting is different as well, the book is more about his relationship with his wife, societies relation ship with empathy boxes (a form of god), and a dies Earth, and the humans left behind, and that the android are becoming more and more human, to the point the test made to test and kill and android can't be passed by some humans; and Deckard even considers if hes killed humans before thinking they were androids at points...alongside the idea of being sexually attracted to an android, to which point a fellow hunter tells him sleep with the android and then decommission it...

It's no worse than, say, Krypton of the various other SyFy TV shows that are and have been out; And this one actually has a plot line that is related to the books or media it covers...well, somewhat. Most people like it because the LGBTQ concept with the series. I like the series because it's what I wish happened with the Harry Potter series, and I'm going to be honest -- It is pretty much an adult version of Harry Potter lol. The latter seasons are not as much, but they are very unique on their own, and sort of have an interesting spin per episode. Ultimately, it's not everyone's 'cup of tea', but it may be if you are interested into the syfy or magic-side of books or movies. Or I guess if you blindly like anything that support a specific group lol..

Of those mentioned that I've seen: Dark is excellent but takes some real effort to keep all the characters and timelines straight. The Expanse is amazing, my current #1, and the attention to the physics of space travel makes it feel more real than most. The OA is very weird, completely unique and entertaining. Electric Dreams was a mixed bag but generally good. My favorites not mentioned are Battlestar Galactica which captured a beautifully desperate tone, Fringe which went in all kinds of directions with a wonderfully subtle sense of humor, and Orphan Black with multiple tour-de-force performances by the amazing Tatiana Maslany.
