Behringer went from "ew its a behringer product" to "here's my wallet, just take it". They saw a giant gap in the market, people *still* want to buy classic synthesizers but almost nobody was making them anymore. And now instead of having to rely on re-sale and rarity based inflation prices, we've got an amazing company that makes great synthesizers for what they're actually worth. I love my Poly D, it's such a versatile instrument, I was so happy when I saw the price was under $1000.

Hey, I just wanted to leave a link to a video here. Everyone loves to crap on Behringer for copying other designs (although I think in the case of the Keystep they maybe went a little too far) and for Uli being a jerk or whatever, but rarely do they get praise for when they do the right thing. Benn Jordan made a video calling out Behringer and Uli in particular about some synths that they were supposed to donate. Well, after some time, he finally got an answer: kzbin.info/www/bejne/l2rTcmiJiJp3nrs And yeah, Behringer is doing a great job of making some cool synths. They may be inexpensive reissues, but their engineers are CLEARLY doing a lot of work to nail the sounds, and every single one that I've bought both sounds and works great, and does a great job of capturing the sound of the original. I do like original ideas and original synths, and I think the Deepmind is a good synth but of course it doesn't get any attention because 1. it's made by Behringer and 2. it's not a copy of anything. Everyone wants to complain when they copy but when they make an original product, everyone ignores it. Shame. Anyway, my point was to link to Benn's video to help give them the credit they deserve, at least in this particular instance.

I have, stowed away in a closet, a MiniMoog. I bought it about 35 years ago at Rogue Music in New York; I'd traded in a Roland SH101 for it. It wasn't particularly in the utmost best shape even then; the store gave a bit of a break on it because a previous owner stained its wood a very dark shade. Anyway, I've considered having a "diagnostic" done on it, and having the m'moog brought up to decency (the power cord is cracked)... however with the Poly D I've been playing for about a year by now, I haven't really thought much about the moog lately. The Behringer provides all I love about a MiniMoog... PLUS...! Eventually I'll probably get the Moog improved.

There's another reason for having both ramp and sawtooth on Osc 4 aside from the obvious modulation use! You can emulate pulse width modulation by combining a ramp from one oscillator and a saw from another. The interference between them produces PWM that cycles from 0% through to 100% continuously at a rate defined by their relative tuning (i.e. it happens at the rate of the "beating").
@BossDrSample3 жыл бұрын
So freaking cool
@fugamantew Жыл бұрын
Whoa whoa whoa, how in hell can I achieve this on the Poly D again?
@eyeball226 Жыл бұрын
@@fugamantew Set one oscillator to saw and one to ramp, mix them at equal volumes, the amount of detuning controls the PWM speed (tune them close for slow PWM, the more detuned they are the faster the modulation).
@o3rMeNsАй бұрын
@@eyeball226isn’t that just the phasing of two oscillators that aren’t hard synced? You don’t need a ramp for that and the notes played affect the speed, not just detune. It’s not the same as PWM.
@eyeball226Ай бұрын
@@o3rMeNs No, there's a big difference between the phasing of two identical waves (e.g. two saws) and two that are the opposite (e.g. a ramp and a saw). The opposite slopes cancel out to make a flat topped wave and the pulse width of that is defined by the phase difference. At 0° they cancel out completely, at 180° they make a square wave, at 90° they make a 25% pulse wave and so on. The speed of the phasing obviously is the same thing as the speed of the PWM. You are right that the note played will also affect the PWM speed as it's a result of the amount of detune.

I absolutely LOVE my PolyD. I come from decades of Rompler and live VST performance. But I just want to throw that all out the window. The PolyD plus a great B3 Clonewheel (I have the Mojo61) just feel RIGHT. The bass is so juicy, I've started subbing in for bass players in other bands (and in my own), and people love the tone. Leads are just awesome and grab you by the balls. It's a Ladder filter, so it's not gonna be pretty like an ARP, it's gonna rock. I will say there are 3 missed features with the PolyD: - With an Aftertouch keyboard, they should have given the option to route the AT to the Mod section for aftertouch vibrato. This seems like a nobrainer and would have been very easy to add. - No Effects loop. The Chorus is solid, and the Distortion circuit is FANTASTIC, but those are "End Chain" effects. A simple Send/Return for Wah or Leslie pre-distortion would have been great. Currently I'm having to build a pedal board with it's own Distortion and Chorus, which makes me sad because the ones built-in are great, but need to be by-passed if I want to add other effects. - Personally, I would have swapped out the Chorus for a Delay effect. IMO delay or spring reverb is an absolute first priority on a mono-synth to keep it from sounding too sterile. Detuning oscillators provides its own chorus, anyway. I only ever use the chorus if I'm in Paraphonic mode and need to fatten up single-oscillator notes in a chord.

Your video is the best for learning about the Poly D in short time - Thank you for that. For me the biggest disadvantage is : If we leave a three-part chord lying there and play a bass run, then each individually played note triggers the entire chord again and again, as if we had struck it again. It can get annoying. One or more keystrokes (gate) can only trigger one envelope again and again (i.e. it starts again) or start at the envelope curve at which it is currently located. This can be annoying in poly mode if you play runs and melodies legato and two tones are triggered when changing from one tone to the other. Of course, this effect is less pronounced if the influence of the envelope z. B. the filter is not as strong or the cutoff frequency is quite wide open.

@Loopop Thank you for the excellent tutorials and reviews. Your teaching style, and level of knowledge are un-matched anywhere else on KZbin. I bought a Behringer Neutron based on your review and demonstration.

I bought a used Poly D as my second synth. However, after some months of gathering dust, I resold it for close to what I paid. Now that I'm getting more into things I realized as much as I love vintage synths, the Poly D (and probably Moog also) is not for me. I love the sound, but I need presets, ability to save, and some kind of LCD display. Also I think I need at least 4 octaves. So I'm watching tons of other Loopop videos to decide what to get. Meanwhile I am focused on learning my way around on a full-size piano.

yeah same I haven't bought this yet but coming from someone who uses a Korg Minilogue, Not having the ability to save presets is a major killer and I don't think i'll be buying it.

Behringer is providing us classic synth clones at a fraction of the second hand oem price, so what if it doesn't sound EXACTLY the same, the fun is having fun with it! Plenty of options to tweak the sound for the fussy, eq, external effects, daw processing etc. I is looking forward to my Behringer 2600 and Poly D soon ! Peace.

Loopop another great tutorial! But did you actually just apologize to a modulator because you told him an oscillator was better?

Yeah I'm definitely getting this one.

The music during the closing credits sold me. Yes, I have a Model D- but no chord capability. Love the round robin arpeggiator idea. Any idea how many notes out on the keybed via MIDI? When in mono or unison mode, is the MIDI out also changing or is it still poly? Thinking interesting applications of the other Behringer mono synths in poly-chain.
@loopop5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! MIDI out will send as many notes as you can press regardless of polyphony mode

A Model D AND a Poly D? You're the man!

My poly d was so cool then yesterday the filter mode switch went limp and the synth became a stone. When I called the retailer in L A to exchange or return it I was informed that Behringer stopped letting anyone but sweet water do returns or warranty work . So I’m stuck still waiting for a response from them . And so I said let it go Christo and reconfigured my rig with the Vermona Performer mk four voice . It was an awesome idea and sounds great with the matriarch sequencer too! But right after I got done recording...my grandmother’s mod wheel just dropped into the synth. Which is also silent now. In just two days and I baby my synths . Peace Christo👽
