So another big surprise from Behringer in their frenzy of 30 years celebrations. This one is the POLY D and yep, it's a pretty heavily “inspired” instrument, that coming from the Minimoog of course.
But with quite a big difference, and the clue is in the name, well sort of. The Poly D is a four voice paraphonic MiniMoog voice, with additional features. Paraphonic as in it can play four notes, but they go through a single VCF and VCA.
Lets take a look....

Things I wished for when I owned a Model D: The ability to play more than one note at a time...check. Aftertouch and velocity sensitive...check. Sequencer...check. I'm already in line at Sweetwater. All I have to do now is figure out how to sneak it into the house without anyone noticing.

Sometimes with synth plugins and iOS synths there is so much going on that I get lost in the functionality. I usually find myself going back to the simpler offerings like what you get in Korg’s Gadget and some of the Arturia iOS synths. More is not always better.

I feel like a lot of Behringer's market uses a hybrid in-the-box + external hardware workflow; one where reverbs & delay are often best left after the synth is recorded in, so that they may be tweaked. Chorus is more of a timbral thing that doesn't extend the release of a sound, so I agree that it makes more sense.
@harrymerchant8944
@harrymerchant8944 5 жыл бұрын
The synth sounds very large. Adding the chorus to an already big sound (especially poly mode) will make the synth very difficult to blend in the mix. It takes up so much space, almost the entire spectrum.

7:25 NO ! This chorus is a fabulous addition by Behringer, especially to enhance the otherwise limited 4 note pads, and even you find yourself using it in the video all the time. It is one of the things that what made me buy this synth. The Juno chorus is one of the best there are so this can also be used as a great effects unit.

Yeah i found myself often having it turned on because i love the sudden Stereo spread the sound of the Synth suddenly gets and it's also giving it a bit of a unison sound too. Which adds a LOT to massive pads and basses. Still though... a multi-effect like the one in the Behringer Odyssey would have been lovely too.

If you want a delay just add it in the end of the chain like you did, having delay on the unit is not necessary better because a delay on the unit becomes redundant if you want to use a specific delay of your own choice instead.

Wonderful, useful demo, Nick. Different conclusions can be made depending on where one focuses. I HEAR a melancholy, atmospheric sound that would be great for film scoring. Both soft and Moog-punchy, one can chord and modulate, brighten or mute. This board would lend itself to a player where fine-tuning of tonality is appreciated along with both harmony and dripping, detuned disintegration. I could see where your suggestions- or at least some of them- would make it into a Version2. Again, I loved what you brought out of the Behringer Poly D and I appreciate your honest reactions throughout.

Goodness gracious, that pad you were playing showing the paraphony was just simply amazing.. Bravo sir, always loved the minimoog sound but I actually really enjoyed that, it was very lush, still had has that minimoog character. I guess thats one place the chorus can really help! Always liked juno-style chorus anyway.. I sure hope they listen to your suggestions tho, there is plenty of real estate left that could be used even without it becoming cclaustrophobic. I mean, there is room for a delay already, right where the behringer logo is... Not that I mind the logo, cause I feckin' adore Behringer, but that neutron delay would be cool since they already have the circuit. Any delay would be nice tho, as long as it has a mix knob. 3 knob, time, repeats, mix, lets go Behringer... :p

It’s nice. And I really like it. But of course what we all need is Behringer to do a version of the PolyMoog 280a with of course the all important Vox Humana patch built in. Btw that chorus is really nice. But add a phaser into the package and start to get a winner. Mind you we can always add outboard fx like you have with the delay.

Chorus for sure! Delay is on everything and most people have a delay kicking around anyway. A chorus built to complement the synth was a great choice.
@montag4516
@montag4516 4 жыл бұрын
Plus delay and reverb generally sound and function best at the very end of the signal path just before going into an amp or recorder. Having on board chorus (instead of delay) allows you to place other effects (such as phaser or flanger) in the chain prior to adding any delay or reverb. So yes, on board chorus probably was the best choice for many setups/situations.

I remember when the Behringer Model D expander came out i was sooooo close to buy one but i held back a little and was hoping there would be a keyboard version soon. And sure enough, Behringer delivered and made sure the double price would give us even more for the money instead of just keys and wood side panels. The keys alone would have been already reason enough for me to buy one but the Sequencer and 4th oscillator and even the analog Juno-inspired Chorus, really made me buy it blindly and i haven't regret it ever since. That heavy non-moog is exactly what i always dreamed of since i started looking for Synthesizers to buy in late 2002, when everything you could get was either VSTs or virtual analog hardware and few actual analog ones, as well as second hand vintage gear and all of it for insane prices. NOW really is the perfect time to start getting into hardware synths with the sheer incredible amount of affordable instruments. And i am soooo grateful for that. The Poly D really is a synth that really takes you on a journey and with a multi-effect unit at the end of the signal chain you're amazed what sonic landscapes you can discover. I cannot recommend the Poly D enough. It actually convinced me to give the Odyssey and the DeepMind6/12 a place in my gear list as well. Soon......

I think the poly d has a lot more character than the Korg Minilogue. It has a warm and inviting look to it, like a piece of furniture, and though I haven't received mine yet, something tells me the way it plays is just as warm and inviting. I do agree with him that having delay is what really will bring out this thing's true potential, which is why I'm glad I already have a boss digital delay. Behringer seems to have delivered with this product. Most synth enthusiasts have VSTs on their computers, and if we're going to buy a standalone synth it only makes sense for it to be a pure analog beast like this.

I just sold mine thinking it took a lot of space and plus that I didn't use it so much. End of story? No :-) While waiting for the new buyer I had it on my couch and looking at it I just... kind of regretted the then coming sale / pickup. It is an adorable design after all. Now I watched this again and I'm really thinking I'll get one again. Or two? Lol. It's truly a lovely synth. I love my Deepmind 12 R too. Perhaps if they made an update to this one with added analog delay, patch memories with names, CC on all knobs... but then again the OBX clone should ... Ah well but anyway... Behringer; I love that you make affordable & exciting synths!

I’m looking at it as a deluxe 4 oscillator Model D that just happens to have paraphony and whatnot. If I get one it will be with that in mind. I was super excited when I saw Behringer’s release video but now that I saw your’s Nick, not as much, LOL. Still I am of the opinion that what Behringer is doing is absolutely fantastic. They are steadily becoming my favorite synth manufacturer. There is so much coming out all the time from them that it’s almost hard to keep track of it all. What more could a budget conscious synth player ask for?

Everything has been said already. Just making some notes here. 🤷‍♂️ 13:58 Fat sound, aftertouch, chorus later too, nice 15:27 first taste of a pad ... yumm :) 15:55 ohh 16:02 yess (aftertouch I suppose) 16:43 with Ventress on, lovely ... “it has got a nice tone” 20:04 ❤️ just lovely, juicy, warm and sweet, melancholic, with heart Yes, it really is a Para-D, not a Poly-D. But it can play nice, lush tetra-chords. And with that chorus, and that sound. And yes, there are more fully featured, good sounding polysynths out there, even for a good price. And I don’t expect anyone to sell their Deepmind to get this one. It is a paraphonic, nice-sounding Model D with great oscillators, a lovely chorus and apparently quite a bit of the character of the original. If this is, compared to others, a pony with a limited number of tricks, then I still want it very much, because I really love those tricks. Not as my only synth, of course. But as the heart for these lovely sounds.
