I have been using this kzbin.infoUgkx1_veP7CApJK_GWy_TczaMciuG64PqJeU as a handy reference book. I read through the book and enjoyed the little glimpses of examples. I love that this author believes in rescue dogs. The tips and training has been invaluable and gave me moments of...."how simple why didn't I think of it" so it's been a great tool. Thank you!

This is actually my dog, Buddy. He was adopted a week after Victoria filmed these videos. He is now 5 months old - believe to be a shepherd/lab mix with possibly some chow. He is already around 35-40 pounds. Great dog! Glad you all like him.

I have researched, studied, and used all kinds of dog training on my dog and others and positive dog training has always proven to be the best kind of training that is long lasting and healthy for my dog. Thank you for posting these, Ms. Stillwell obviously cares about the dogs she trains and the owners and it is so refreshing to find ways to train a dog that does not have the owners force the dog to do anything against their will, has none hitting and none yelling methods. :)

You can let the puppy explore if you'd like but it's important that you "puppy proof" your home beforehand (there are great resources on the ehow . com site to find out how to do this). It might also be a good idea to supervise the first exploration. Congrats on the new addition to your family that's coming soon!

Hi Victoria. I started to teach my puppy tricks about a week old. He is a 11-week-old labdoodle. The problem is that he does not seem to chew the treats I gave them very well, and he did throw up 2 times for the past week due to the treats ( some sorta peanut butter treats). Do you have any suggestions on the treats? Thanks.

The dominance thing is all to do with the Alpha male and female thing that was around a few years back, it has been proven to be inaccurate now. Victoria, in my opinion, is one of the best out there and her advice is based on common sense and not hurting the dog in anyway.

a little OT but do you guys know why dogs often respond so well to a whistle as your recall cue (as opposed to a word)? my family spent loads of time teaching my poodle recall with 'come' as the cue word, but he was always a little lackluster coming back to us. but one time i just decided to start whistling for him instead, and he learned it as the cue for recall without me even doing anything special. he picked it up as if it were simply natural. it's always been a little mysterious to me.

Usually the chow/kibble is a good treat. I just get my puppy's treats (which are pretty big for training) and break them up into pieces. I highly recommend treats though, because she/he will associate the treats as a good job, not just food. Hope this helps! :)

Make sure you have a solid recall without the stimuli first (he comes immediately in 100% of the time). Then add just a bit of stimuli. Make sure he is completely reliable. Once you've achieved that - add some more distractions, etc. Step by step. Don't rush. You can fade out the treats so that the dog doesn't need them anymore. Gradually turn treats into a random event - sometimes he'll get treats, sometimes not. In that way he'll never know whether he gets them or not.

We've just adopted a rescue dog, we don't know his proper name, but we've called him Sonny. We don't know his age either. He's responding to Sonny, but being a Dachshund cross Jack Russel he has his hunting head on every time we go out. When he's out on a long leash or free in the garden, he doesn't respond when he's in hunting mode. When he's close to us he's great or when we've got his favorite toy or treat he'll respond...I was able to get him to sit on a loose lead 5 times in a row in an open space on a loose lead so he's an intelligent dog. I was just wondering what is the best way to teach a dog who's just learning his new name, in a new environment with new people, although we've had him for a week and 1 day lol :) Early Xmas prezzie for us. He's perfect in every way though. He goes to bed at night and stays there all night, if you put our food in front he'll not touch it untill we say ok :) He's super, just that one little but where he pulls in excitement, which he is getting much better at. My question is, how do we get him to come in an open space, with a long lead, with his hunting head on? Many thanks Sarah

Does anyone have any advice for me. We adopted a 7 week old puppy and she is just so clever. She has been with us almost 2 weeks and knows how to sit, stay, and heel. She even comes when called but only when she thinks we have treats. She will come right up in close to us to get her treats but as soon as she gets one she moves away. She had very little human contact before we got her and she was very afraid of us at first. Now she is very warm with me and I can pat her all over and she even comes up to me and licks my face. It's more just getting her to not retreat from us as soon as she gets what she wants during play/training and getting her to think of petting and praise as a reward. Any advice? Is this just a matter of giving her more time? Or are there steps I can take towards this. Thanks!

I tried training my 8 week old puppy, Onyx, to come and I gave him a treat afterward. I did this a few times, and now he just follows me around nonstop and sticks to me like glue. Frankly, it's getting kind of annoying because he thinks he'll always get a treat if he's as close to me as possible all the time. If he sees I don't have any treats on me, he completely ignores me. Any tips on how to bribe him out of doing this?

I had the same problem, thankfully, I just ignored him and he just grew out of it. (Sorry for being really late)
