The valaryon family is not a dragon riding family. They and the Celtigars are Valyrian but not all Valyrians are dragonriders. The Targaryens are the only surviving dragon riding family, valaryons such as Laenor, Laena, and the twins Baela and Rhaena are only able to bond with dragons through their Targaryen mother. Corlys and his brother Vaemond are both unable to bond with dragons.

It makes Rhaenyra's infidelity much more obvious. Beyond that it doesn't effect the story much. May lead to rumors about parentage of certain characters introduced later in the show. But overall it's an artistic choice and doesn't in any meaningful way change Corlys as a character. I like the actor and portrayal so far.

Furthermore he indicated that if he could go back and change anything he would describe the Velaryons as brown skinned. He gets to do things in the shows that enhance the story. No it bothered people that Sallador and Xaro were race swapped, but as both of their stories were minimized and later forgotted it didn't have much staying power. Their importance from the books was killed and they disappeared almost as soon as they appeared. The show ruined the entire sections of the stories they were a part of so people had more complaints than just their race. But yes, people complained just like now, and rightfully so. But now people complain more because it actually has an effect on the story they're presenting. The whole reason why Targaryens married Velaryons alot was to preserve the valyrian features associated with royalty in Westeros. That does not exist in the show, they just awkwardly talk about pure valyrian blood as if they have it and it matters. The Velaryons are not dragon riders, the only thing that matters with their blood is their looks, but that was removed in the race swapping. I think you have to be an extremely spineless person to defend the tokenized race swapping. Everyone knows it was done because of a quota so everyones taken out of it every time they appear on screen. Only those who care more about flaunting their virtue than the actual story did not mind it. The mentality of surrendering the dignity of the story just because of some irrational belief that ever even hinting at the fact that not every single piece of entertainemnt needs to have people of all races everywhere every time is some big crime is truly pathetic. What would be wrong with keeping everything as accurate as possible? What would be the harm? What justifies the change? For hollywood the answer is money, because these quotas only exist because men in suits think that they can turn everything into a culturally black american rallying cry to make people watch their product Black Panther style. Really bad analogy. Columbus was a great navigator who stumbled across America on his way west to China and the Indies. Corlys is a blend of Marco Polo/Vasco de Gama and other navigators and an almost Ferdinand Magellan. But he is also like Niccolo Machiavelli - a great statesman of his age.

Would a fully European looking westeros in a medieval time period accept a black guy as a lord or royalty? This change was purely for real world identity politics.

The show is on a different universe than the books, so everything that happens in the books does not apply to the show unless said events are established to be show canon. There is no evidence to suggest the people of Westeros are prejudice against certain racial groups except the Dornish due to bad history. All art of Corlys depicts a pure Valyrian, before the show was announced. So, the old fans know what he looks like. Most people like Coryls no matter what, since he's just badass. But then there's a ton of new fans that just like the Velaryons because they are black. It got the show a whole new audience by that, that pay money to watch it. From a marketing perspective, it was a genius move to make em black. Lots of cash in that. Does it pay homage to the book? Not really. Rhaenyra's kids are also silver-haired in the book, so they also ignored that. Among alot of other scenes they left out, like when Daemon is a good father to his Velaryon daughters.

In the books, Valyrians were literally Targs but under a different name. White skin, white blonde hair. Imagine they stuck to that. So many average viewers/non-book readers would be so confused when a Valyrian and a Targaryen are on screen together. It would be so dumb, for the show runners to try and explain to the average audience that these to families that look exactly the same, are different. Making them black wasn't some political, woke decision. It was a smart move by the writers to not confuse fans.

I is ridiculous for the show to have made the Velaryon’s black. We are told over and over that the ppl of Valeria are a magical people, they have pale skin, various shades of purple eyes, and silver/gold hair. If they would of at least made their eyes purple, but to just through silver hair on a bunch of black ppl just makes no sense to the story. And the reason the show runners did it is what makes me mad. They didn’t want to make a show about a bunch of white ppl. First off that’s offensive. If anyone said they didn’t want to make a show about a bunch of black ppl the world would be up in arms and that show runner would be fired and never work again. But it’s ok to offend white ppl in woke Hollywood. And if he didn’t want to make a show about a bunch of white ppl then your working on the wrong story. Do a different show. Don’t change up the characters we know and love. Now I do love the actors portrayal of Corlys on the show. I think he’s done a great job, I have nothing against the actor. But this obsession with race swapping is just stupid. If you want to make more shows with black actors that’s fine. Write stories and have as many black actors as you want play the characters. But don’t take stories written for ppl that are suppose to look one way and change it. I don’t care what race or nationality we’re talking about. I wouldn’t like if they took a character written as being black and had a white actor play the role either. Once we know a character, we don’t want to see you change them. The character is always written to look a certain way. So for HOTD I would of been mad if they dressed a character in modern cloths because it’s set in a fictional world that’s based on Middle Ages England, so they need to dress the part. Because they need to look the part. I want the character to look the way it’s written, that’s all. And that’s why the race swapping doesn’t work, even in fiction.
