Those giant crossbow things are actually called Ballistas and they’re real medieval siege weapons developed originally by the Greeks and used by the Romans (I think you see them in Gladiator for a modern reference) and other civilizations during the Middle Ages.

Just to extrapolate on the whole “Age of Man” thing, Kevin was totally correct. Tolkien intended his universe to be a sort of creation myth for Britain. So we are, by Tolkien’s measure, currently in the age of man.

Say what you will about the ent stuff earlier in the movie, but everything from when they reach the edge of the forest onward is great IMO. The "last march of the ents" is awesome and that music cue is one of my favourite bits of score in the whole trilogy.

I loved this series.... just make me want to crack out the trilogy with my son again (and am wondering whether to run out and buy the extended edition - or wait for it in 4K). I love the discourse, and even Nick's readings brings tears to my eyes. Thanks so much for doing this review so well. For my 2 cents, the big villain in Two Towers is the pride and hubris of humankind - the fall of the alliance between Gondor and Rohan... it's the decision to hide away in Helms Deep out of pride rather than to band together with Gondor. It's that pride that keeps the people of Rohan enthralled in an obviously failing Theoden - as much as he is enthralled by Wormtongue's silky poison. As for the Ent's, yes Merry and Pippin are reader/viewer - but the Ent's represent all of those that would seek to bury their heads in the sand, to disengage with the world's woes even though they threaten to burn down your front door. They are the world's inertia or apathy - the breaking of which is slow and painful; until their eyes are opened to the fact that they are part of the problem (through their inaction). It's a deliberately frustrating thing - but considering the context under which Tolkein wrote LOTR, I think they are the mirror to the see a world thinking the rise of evil could be considered "another's problem". And I think the issue with Arragorn's 'romance'with Eowyn - this is his own test... he knows that love for Eowyn would be easy (as a human) and politically savvy... he knows that to tie his heart to Arwen will also bring much sadness (and unfair sacrifice) that he is not sure that he can live up to. And as for Faramir and Smeagol.... we can't forget that for the people of Gondor, only fell things come from Mordor (where Gollum escaped from), and they have learned only hatred and distrust of those dark things. We know that Frodo (now forever known as Fredo) has accepted Smeagol as he sees himself (and his future) in him - Faramir see's only a threat to the land of Gondor.

To give Elyse's bias some credit, though I still rank T2T last on my list, this one very firmly establishes the call for glory/honor aspect of the trilogy that doesn't exist in Fellowship. Theoden, Aragorn, Sam, and Faramir exhibit it in spades. The sheer amount of poetic dialogue that surfaced in the groups discussion is evidence of that. As an ode to Tolkien, this one is mature in its writing where Fellowship isn't, and attempts to shift the scale and stakes of the characters in an intrinsic way. But it does still exist in a vaccuum, serving its little 3rd of the trilogy over the rest, which is where it fails.

I've pretty much always felt that the quality of the movies go in order of release. Fellowship just has all the great backstory. Builds up the characters and you get to know and love them. Plus, I think the Mines of Moria battle sequence is great (although showing it's age), but perhaps not up to the highs of the battle for Helms Deep...i just like how intimate it is.

Mr. Lord of the Facts, please make sure you mention to them in the third movie the Battle of Dale, taking place roughly the same time as the Battle of Pelennor fields. It was probably the biggest battle in the war, and it really makes The Hobbit movies we’ll watch even more consequential, cause it takes place at the lonely mountain and features the Dwarves of Erebor led by Dain II Ironfoot and the Men of Dale led by King Brand.

@AdelaideBen1
@AdelaideBen1 4 жыл бұрын
Haldir's death (in the movie) is made more meaningful because he's introduced as an entitled arrogant dick in the first movie... and we know the sacrifice the Elves make in coming to their aid at Helm's Deep. And you can't tell me that the Elves arriving isn't one helluva heartfelt moment - knowing that golden days of old aren't gone forever.

Gondor is the last free kingdom because Rohan is not really a free kingdom. The lands they live on technically belong to Gondor. The Rohirrim are allowed to have those lands as condition of protecting that portion of Gondor. They do not own the land outright until after the war is over and Aragorn gives Rohan to them outright. It makes zero sense that they had Theoden question where was Gondor to help protect Rohan. Why didn’t they send troops? They did, dude. You ARE the troops. It also makes zero sense in that Gondor has been fighting these same enemies for years and years in other parts of the kingdom, while Theoden was on only the fringes of the battles.

So, just something to keep in mind about the effects, LotR was budgeted at $281 Million. Not per movie, that's for all three, less than $100 Million per film and WETA had never done anything this big and hadn't even really done all that much CGI before. For comparison, the Hobbit trilogy cost SEVEN HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE MILLION DOLLARS, and most of it looks nowhere near as good as films that came out a decade earlier.

Maybe they talk about it in the video, but one thing about this part i didn't understand was why the keep wasn't behind the wall. Strategically doesn't it make a lot more sense to have the keep behind the wall rather than having to deal with 2 flanks? Or even have the keep behind the second wall? Also why did they even need to guard the wall. I researched and it said in the books the caves were behind the wall but in the movie thats not the case so it doesn't make much sense. Other than that, I am really enjoying watching these movies for the first time.
@Snorlax_il
@Snorlax_il 4 жыл бұрын
In the books they have a much larger army too, the elves dont come to the rescue, and they dont use black powder to blow the wall up. The keep is behind the wall though, that's where they ride out from in the end. The idea, I think, is that there are 2 sets of walls and that the first gell too suddenly for them to close the second's gate
