I can tell you which audience the Khan reveal serves: The middle ground fans: People who didn't actually watch Star Trek, but knew that Khan was a big deal from cultural osmosis. Because that was me, and I thought both the character & reveal were SO cool in 2013.

Here's the problem with Into Darkness...The Wrath of Khan worked because it was an extension of Trek TOS, and it had the benefit of bringing back a beloved character all Trek fans knew. It doesn't work, at all, in Into Darkness because there is zero history between Kirk and the Enterprise crew and nu-Khan. He could have been literally anyone and it wouldn't have made any difference whatsoever. The big "revelation" that Harrison is really Khan doesn't matter in the least, because who the fuck is Khan in the Kelvin universe? That's even ignoring all the other structural and tonal issues, not to mention the complete dumpster fire of a script that needed a dozen more revisions. The first one skated by on the strength of the cast chemistry, but the plot was incidental because it was more about setting up the new versions of the characters. Into Darkness doesn't get that benefit because the characters are established, but it does nothing with them, and pisses away all good will the first one built. Fortunately, Beyond is goddamn phenomenal and the best of the Kelvin films...but no one saw it because Into Darkness was such a wreck.
@gp63
@gp63 4 жыл бұрын
100% of this. Plus the revelation of Kirk's son and the whole subplot of aging and mortality. Wrath of Khan has some weighty themes behind them that felt relatable and well-earned. Into Darkness would have been alot better just playing it straight instead of being a cheap knock-off.

Can't wait for y'all take on "Star Trek Beyond".... Personally, it is my favorite of the Kelvin Timeline, but to each their own! Side-Note: Suggestions for future retrospective "Reviewed & Ranked" movies.... Today, Joel Schumacher sadly passed away. Maybe a look back at the four "Batman" movies from 1989 to 1997 (unless it's something y'all have done... I'm somewhat new to the channel)? I know "Forever" gets a bad rap along with "Batman & Robin", but watching it again, it's not as horrible as people make it out to be.... for me, anyway. Anyway, just a thought! Cheers, fellas!

The Khan moment didn’t rub me the wrong way this time around! I get that it wasn’t set up within the universe just yet that the name was something/someone important, but if anything, I can excuse how dramatic that delivery was as Khan simply affirming that he indeed had lied about his identity and he’s actually very passionate about whatever he’s trying to do.

This movie is a mess, and it’s whole problem is encapsulated in the Khan reveal. JJ Abrams is all about fanservice as opposed to storytelling. He needs better screenwriters than Orci and Kurtzman to make a compelling narrative.

"My name is....Khan." "Um, ok? And you are?" - should have been the response. There's literally no point to that twist for the characters in that movie. Nor, for an audience who doesn't know who Khan is, which, considering this whole JJ Trek was supposed to appeal to a new audience, WAS THE INTENDED AUDIENCE. Instead, it exists only to piss off fans who know about The Wrath of Khan, exemplified by that godawful ripoff ending in engineering.

This movie blows on several levels. JJ continues his - cool without context - style of shooting. The Enterprise underwater is dumb and makes no sense. The biggest beef with this movie is the ability to use a transporter to travel light years. If one can transport that far then there is no longer any need for starships. Terrible story telling too - magic tribble blood, a Khan reveal with a Caucasian British actor - seriously?!!??!
