I lived in Jackson in 1963 & 64 and 1969 & 70.. It was clean, and most everyone was working or attending college. Neighborhoods were mostly segregated along racial or socio-economic lines. Unless you were very poor or transient. We moved frequently because of my father's job and were in a poor neighborhood which had mostly poor white and some poor black families. However I reiterate the neighborhood was clean. Neither black or white people would have left piles of trash and debris in front of their houses. For the most part we all got along. I have fond memories being a child running through billowing clouds of DDT when the city would spray for mosquitoes. We stretched out our arms and ran around in circles pretending to be planes. The only thing better than that was swimming in the sewage canals. I credit those sewage canals as the reason I never get sick. The water I swam in has inoculated me for everything. Great time to be a kid.

It’s crazy how we have changed as a society in really less than 50 years. I grew up in a part of South Dallas called Oak Cliff, it’s like a badge of honor to say you’re from The OC lol, but I was walking with my older brother, to the shopping center at the corner of Highway 67, and Polk St. In the early to mid 1970’s where there was there was a Skagg’s Albertsons, and a sound warehouse. I was 5 and my brother was 8. We would get a free cookie from the bakery, then we would go to the music store where all the teenagers would hang out, it was a great time to be a kid, Mo-Town was hot, and everyone was cool 😎 I admired the beautiful black girls in their Candies sandals, and cherry lip gloss, with soft, big Afro’s, the guys in their tight faded light blue jeans, and satin button up shirts that had the ocean, or waves, or Jaws 🦈 on it lol. I really thought they were such cool grown ups!

The city doesn't dump the trash, the crud does. The city doesn't murder people, its residents do. Come on, being poor doesn't mean you have to be a lazy lout. So sad. Thanks, Joe for sharing this with us.
@NNiolet7 сағат бұрын
Jackson has issued over 300 "boil water" notices since 2018. It isn't all about "not being lazy" for the residents. Many of them have been on the receiving end of corruptions effects; no water, roads are terrible, no leadership in the community, and let's not forget how the city was burned to the ground three separate times and was even coined a nickname because of it. After the war, the south was left in disarray and the rich racists left their plantations and went north. Everyone here is essentially everyone who couldn't feasibly leave when all that destruction happened. What you see is the result of corruption, federal backlash since the war, people leaving with their money, etc. But yes, we can all do better, but I can almost guarentee if you stepped a single foot into jackson, ms, you would likely end up broke down on the side of the road from the fear of stopping to get gas at any of the stations there. Spoda isn't kidding when he says he "lived to tell the tale." If he DOES go down the wrong street in Jackson (just like some other cities) it would be the last video.... The literally had a case of decapitation (left on someones porch) as an intimidation tactic. It's a literal warzone.

I watch some KZbinrs who travel Eastern Europe & Russia & then when visited run down areas in the UK they reckon it's far worse than anywhere they been in Eastern Europe or former Soviet States. One of the KZbinrs said the southern states of the US are the scariest places he's visited where he just didn't feel safe & he travels all over the world & is also apparently ex special forces. I don't report to know alot of urban blight but i do watch a TON of these videos on this channel and others on KZbin. And it just seems that Jackson MS is really one of the worst. I hate to say it but the corruption is so bad that the state really needs to move in and take over all aspects of the city to revive it correctly. The local politicans can NOT be trusted to do the right thing by the people anymore and unless more funds and other higher entities move in and take control, this city will be completely unlivable. It breaks my heart to see a once beautiful capital city reduced to this state of decay. If i lived there i don't think i could leave all that trash all over the city. I would drive around on my days off and pick up as much as i could. It's just saddening.

The economic and social issues that places like Jackson and NOLA are facing are much more complex than that. Cities don't exist in a vacuum, they are subject to influence and control from other counties, state, and federal legislation. The level of blight comes from decades of corruption, mismanagement, and malignant manipulation from more than one "very specific group of people".

One of the reasons we see so much trash on the streets or highways in all our cities not just this one, they force closed all the landfills decades ago. I didn't see much kitchen trash on the streets but mostly heavy hard to rid trash that would normally require a landfill. Even paid trash services today are so restrictive about what should be in the garbage can. But you can bet a lot is being moved by barge to other countries around the world. Even San Diego in the 70s had a large landfill across the street from Miramar Naval Air Station just a few blocks west. The area was still being developed for Mira Mesa one of the largest subdivisions in California today. At the time Miramar was the F-14 Top Gun center and PSA had an engine rebuilding plant just next door. Today it is a Marine Air Station, moved from El Toro to Miramar. Top Guns moved further North of LA where there was plenty of open space and not so dangerous. It was very strange to go to that dump and smell the nice clean Pacific air. I've seen just about everything imaginable living in Houston most of my life and then some time in Baton Rouge. It wasn't but a few years ago I drove down one of the Baton Rouge freeways and there was one spot with a mattress laying there. They just wait until late late at night and kick it off. They still have the ugliest oldest freeways in the US. In 76 they were just beginning to expand Baton Rouge freeways and it was all piney woods to the south south west. I was working there in 76 and lived in a nice apartment that had a 7 Eleven on the end of the street and nothing else for a few miles any direction. A Sunday drive on the new section of freeway was beautiful with no traffic, today all the medical centers and lots of business in that same area. I guess you might say I helped break in that new section of freeway. The New I-10 bridge was not up at that time and only Ferry and old 190 bridge. Not as many people were commuting due to that traffic and no bridge to handle it all. Today they are way behind the curve and should have a built a new bridge 15 years ago due to all the commuting from Lafayette. That new bridge did not help for long.
