I spent the 70's as a teenager living on the eastside of San Jose. The house we lived in was a small 1600 square foot 4 bedroom house that my Mom and Dad paid $45k for in 1971 and sold in 1979 for 75k. This was before the Silicon Valley boom. I looked on Zillow and it says it is now 1 million 300 thousand! I had driven by it about 4 years ago and it did not even look well cared for at the time. Crazy!! Love your Videos!

I have an internet friend who lived in San Jose for many years. A modest but lovely house...he shared pics of it, and his wife had a garden there. They wanted out of California and moved to Ivans, Utah...near St George. I'm pretty sure they made a mint on the sale of their house, and the Utah home was much less expensive. Plus, he's far enough away from the light pollution that he can do his deep space stargazing in his backyard. Oh, and his wife loves hiking in the rugged wilderness nearby.

As a Brit, I had the upmost pleasure of visiting California and I stayed in a family home in San Jose. I got to see San Francisco and loved going to the Bay Area and looking at the sea lions basking in the sun. I loved the trip to Alcatraz. I was completely in love with the state, the food and the hospitality of everyone I came in contact with. I didn’t actually recognise much in this video but, obviously it’s a big place and my trip was back in 1986. All I know is I flew back to the U.K. grateful and with joy in my heart that I’d been made so welcome by the public and felt like I was part of the wider American family. Thank you Joey for allowing this old gal to revisit those very happy memories. God bless America & God bless my King. ❤🇺🇸🇬🇧❤❤

It is NOT peaceful, there's tons of crime, it's way too expensive, too many damn kids speeding up and down the streets, too much crime and the people that live there all share one house! I grew up on 11th street so I know! San Jose is not all it's cracked up to be. It's now how it used to be in the 80's. I remember the only good thing about it was the 1989 earthquake. 🙂

You found your way to San Jose (cue Dionne Warwick). My husband & I both moved here from Oakland to attend San Jose State University in 1977. We were determined to move back to the east bay after graduation because back then SJ was still mostly an agricultural city. The Silicon Valley boom was just started to take off. We found it too rural & too slow. ( Wish you would have shown a little of SJSU on your tour.) We married our sophomore year, started a family in 1984 and bought our home in South San Jose in 1992 for $207k. The homes in our mostly nice middle class neighborhood are now selling for 1.2-1.5 million. We are flabbergasted at how much property prices have increased. We thought we’d only stay until we graduated but found it a great place to raise a family. With two incomes, it was possible to stay. Our daughters no longer live in the Bay Area but my husband & I have never lived anywhere else. The weather is the best in the country, the diversity, location to the ocean, mountains and the Sierras plus the Napa Valley wine country can’t be beat. However, if we were starting out today, we could never afford it. My husband wants to sell & move somewhere cheaper but we have prime real estate that many people would die to have. We live near open park spaces perfect for outdoor activities, libraries & community centers with good public transportation. I can walk to most of these places. We’re only an hour from both Oakland or San Francisco. The one drawback is the disparity in the wealth gap which has created a huge homeless population. Surprised you did come across this in your video. Thank you for showcasing our beautiful city. If/when you return, please don’t forget SJSU & our prized shopping area, the beautiful Santana Row.

I was raised about 125 miles south of SJ and as a kid we drove up to see family. In 1975 an uncle bought a ranch style three bed house on a lot for $35k. The fam thought he overpaid. Last year he sold the house for $1.15 million and moved to AZ. Back then there were fruit orchards everywhere.

This weeks video presents us with this interesting paradox, Money is required to live in San Jose - but having wealth doesn't mean you will be free. San Jose is a very beautiful city and the Winchester Mystery House is very quirky. Mrs. Winchester employed a staff of carpenters who did all the work on the house throughout her life. She believed that the ghosts of those killed by Winchester rifles were after her and so she turned her house into a maze to confuse them so they couldn't find her. You would think that having unlimited wealth would be liberating. But here this woman was trapped in her house by the source of her money. And you need money to live in San Jose! But money can be a source of entrapment like in Mrs. Winchester's case. Joe knocks it out of the park once again. Another beautiful video.

Born and raised in San Jose and still live in the area in Morgan Hill which is the next town south of San Jose. My parents bought their home in the early 60's and my Mother still lives there. It was a wonderful place to have a childhood with the open spaces and orchards. Unfortunately, the orchards are all gone as well as the open space. I have been to the Winchester house only once about 20 years ago. They had flashlight tours on Friday the 13th and Halloween, not sure if they still do that. It is horribly expensive here and if I hadn't bought a place in the 90's, I would not be able to live here. Most folks that I am close to are leaving and moving to either Nevada or Idaho. It is a beautiful area, although there are horrible areas here, just like everywhere else. We are in close proximity to major sports teams as well as natural beauty such as the mountains and the beach.

So many Texans have a false, Fox News, impression of what California looks like. It is so far off. I would have stayed but I lived in a very expensive zip code and wanted to slow down due to health reasons. My neighborhood was very safe with fantastic views of the ocean and great restaurants. I have a friend with a Peruvian restaurant in San Fran. She said you really have to bring your A game in the food industry. The competition is stiff.

100% FACTS ... If you wanna be THE BEST OF THE BEST in your industry (almost any industry on the planet) you go try in California. SF and LA have their issues (in selective areas not ALL OF THEM) but overall the quality of life is incredibly high if you have family with roots there (already have property) or if you have a very high salary. Honestly had the best childhood imaginable growing-up in the Central Valley just East of the Bay Area. Feel BLESSED that my parents set-up their roots there 40+ years ago (and about 200-300 other family members) up and down the valley, in the Bay and in LA. It's been great. I will never leave. I've spent some time in other states/cities: NYC, Alabama, Florida, Boston, Michigan, DC .... NOTHING compares to a life in California (when you already have family and friends established there). I'm sure it'd be different if I were a transplant though.

I’ve enjoyed you travels the past years, and glad you came to San Jose. My wife and I have been long time residents there. We really needed 2 good paying incomes and diligent saving back in the 1990’s to scratch our way into a starter house, and we traded up a few years later. It’s extremely difficult to buy a detached single family home now…only very high earners can do it. We love the climate and diversity (great ethnic food everywhere!) and plan to retire here since our personal housing costs are not a big factor. 49’ers, Warriors, and Giants are all within an hour drive to see them live. Hills surround the valley with trees and trails for hiking. I know most folks are shaking their heads, feeling it’s not worth it, but for me it’s home and all is good.

My ex-husband's father was a City Planner for San Jose for many years, in the late 50s through 1980s. They lived in a nice, affordable middle class family neighborhood. In a modest 4 bedroom home. San Jose changed around the mid-90s. It got very crowded and not very nice, in my opinion. Housing prices were going up too. His parents moved out to Auburn to retire around 2000 and made a pretty penny on their home. I'm glad to see and hear that the city has cleaned up since the 90s. I love that the old architecture is being well cared for.

Thanks for pointing out how the suburbs of San Francisco San Jose and oakland are completely developed and populated without any space between. Effectively it’s all one metro area with SF as the core. Lack of usable land is what drives crazy property values. There’s just a narrow strip between the marsh and the hills where you can build

Well, you can afford it...if, like me you picked the right place to live 18 years ago. (I live in Willow Glen in a more-than decent older complex and pay about 60% of market rate). When I started with Pacific Bell I worked at 4 N. Second St, just a couple block from where you're walking around downtown. At 5:19, the storefront with the arches used to be La Taqueria, one of the best places ever to get burritos and quesadillas. And those hoops you're walking through are pretty neat to see when they're all lit up and changing colors at night. The Winchester House is pretty cool, even if the stories they used to tell about it were sort of made up. BUT....knowing that you're a fan of classic rock, and since you were driving in the neighborhood, I'm surprised you didn't do a drive-by of the house where the Doobie Brothers got their start. Anywho, I hope you enjoyed your stay in my 'hood. Happy trails!

I was born in San jose hospital in 1961. The hospital no longer exists but i remember it well. I lived by the east foothills and could drive 3 minutes and be in those beautiful hills. We had cherry, apricot and plumb orchards all around. Though most of the orchards are gone i was very blessed and fortunate to grow up here. And whats amazing is that the city has kept its self up pretty good after all these years.

It is not beautiful anymore. I’ve lived in San Jose for 38 of my 43 years on Earth. It used to be a really great place to be. It has been going down the drain for years now. Homeless tent cities all over the place, terrible roads with pot holes, super expensive, etc. All of our city parks are riddled with gophers holes and weeds. It is so bad I can’t even play soccer with my two boys because their little feet get stuck in the holes. All this while having insane property taxes, probably some of the highest in the country. Just paid my second installment of property taxes yesterday, $8,850. $18,000 a year for a basic 3/2 1,500 sq ft house. Where is all this money going? We really need to get out of here.

All the money goes to Ukraine to pay for their government pensions. I mean their war, they are totally having a war. Seriously every once in a while the news has crisis actors I mean actually shows you its happening like every six months or so to make you realize you're sending your retirement money to a foreign country and funding your demise at the same time. Don't forget to send more money there.

SJ will reassess you before you even have a chance to bury your folks, they are not following BOEs rulings on Prop 19. They just moved to Tasman Cisco buildings and living like kings, that money is going to their pension funds. There needs to be an audit. Other counties aren't hostile and openly blowing taxpayer dollars.

I've lived in the area since 1977 and have seen it explode from its tech roots. Yes, San Jose is not known for its aesthetics. It was never a destination town but it has never billed itself as such. Its downtown is not just becoming more vibrant since the pandemic but, in many places, is becoming hip and happening. I've worked in many of the buildings featured including City Hall, St. Joesph's, The Italian Bank building, and used to have a business meeting in the Winchester House weekly. You can't beat the weather here. San Jose isn't for everyone. It's challenging living in town but there are endless opportunities for bright, innovative, and self-motivated individuals. You can't just cruise through jobs here. Thanks for the video.

My dad's family moved there in the early 1950's. His cousins still live there, but his children were pushed out of the market because of the cost. They live in the valley. My mother's great aunt passed away in 2002 and had a house on the side of a hill with a large beautiful yard. There was a bidding war for the house and the new owner knocked down this beautiful craftsman house and built a ugly modern looking thing. All he wanted was the view.

After retirement I drove long haul trucks mostly just to see the sights just couldn’t sit still if you know what I mean. But never very much in California. That’s how I feel in love with Texas. Expensive is right I’d say. It’s a place to visit but don’t live if you don’t have or make a lot of money. Wow those numbers just blows my mind how people make it. But with those big companies that are in the Silicon Valley I imagine they pay quite well. Clean city very nice beautiful buildings. Your stats for. This city is on par for southern British Columbia, particularly but not limited to Vancouver and Kelowna. Average house price in both cities is +$1 million CDN. That creates a ripple effect as “economic refugees” go outside the metro areas looking for affordable housing. Even fuel prices are comparable. We’re in the $1.70 per litre range in the Southern Interior, $2/litre in the Lower Mainland (Vancouver area). $0.54 of that $2 is taxes.

Actually, San Jose is one of the cheaper neighborhoods in the SF Bay Area. You can still get a 2-bedroom home in SJ for a tad over a million. Most other cities are mid to high million; the premium cities like Los Altos, Palo Alto, Belmont, etc are 2 million and up. We paid 2 million for a 1280 sq-ft home built in the 1960s with no air conditioning in Belmont.

I grew up in San Jose in the 70's and 80's. It wasn't expensive then. My parents bought their first house there in 1973 for $50,000. There was more crime back then. Our house was burgled 8 times from '73 - '84 and we had two cars stolen. San Jose was the PCP (drug) capitol of the country in the 80's and San Jose PD did not mess around. But for all that I had a great childhood there. I wouldn't want to live there now and I got out of San Jose right after high school and never looked back.
