I agree heavily with your review. This game felt like it was supposed to be character driven but none of the characters were developed enough to really make it work. The stepdad was evil in a cartoon villain type of way, we never got to know her mother before she killed herself, and Lorelei herself felt like a blank slate. Her boyfriend’s personality was just that he was nice, and the relationship felt like it progressed way too fast..A lot happened but at the same time it felt like close to nothing happened. I loved downfall and cat lady but this was a disappointment. I was never able to finish this game but this video helped me see what I missed and made the game easier to get through lmao.

Why did he feel more like a Captain Planet villian than any sort of antagonist? He seemed like he was just a bastard to be a bastard.

I think crows in the game are suppose to be the real life symbolism, meaning a tragedy or death is going to happen. It happens when: Susan is close to her mental breakdown and she has to make the crows go away When time slows when robbie drops the grenade. When Susan dies in the hospital and will have to endure its horrors And when jimmy is turned into a crow, with the potential of him dying and signifying the horror that is happening in the real world

I have to agree on the fact that Lorelai was pretty weak by the series' standards. I get that since Downfall was a downer ending and the Cat Lady was bleak but hopeful, that the final game should be positive for the most part because that's uncharted territory but... I don't think this story went through enough drafts. Because she's a central character I'm going to give my thoughts on the Queen of Maggots. The way I interpret her is that she represents decay whether it be mental or physical. By extension I also think she represents change to a degree. While corpses completely decay in a couple of months, living people with mental illnesses can last for up to decades, serving as food for her maggots for a lot longer. Which is why she prefers to let people live and only get rid of a couple of exceptions (the parasites from the Cat Lady kill mentally ill people and animals in distress for example, at least this goes for those who we know the motivations of). This is also why he leaves Joe alive and puts an unloaded gun into his coffin after burying him alive. It causes him more distress and that's more food for the worms. Because I see her as a representation of decay, I don't think she's evil. She's a force of nature that needs to eat and so she does. Same as the maggots themselves. She doesn't target people because they hate people or whatever, they just happen to be what they eat. And just like Susan and Lorelai need her help, without decay our ecosystem wouldn't work at all. Of course it doesn't mean we have to fully lean into the phylosophy of "everything will die and decay one day nihilism" but before Lorelai (the game) I think it was made very clear that the Queen of Maggots is an important part of existence that moves things forward one way or another. I think if anything the dream house symbolism represents the nihilism of not caring about life one way or another and embracing the presence of decay in a destructive way. I think she needs an heir because just like how nothing lasts forever even decay cannot last forever. She's not a god after all, she's a representation of a force of nature (in my eyes anyway). And I think she chose Lorelai because she also represents change because she's eager to make things change. The way she was made objectively evil instead of a hard to grasp concept that's actually advanced things reaaaaaly rubbed me the wrong way because of that. And her defeat felt that much emptier. In the previous games the goals were more every day things despite how much surreal elements there are. Saving a mentally ill partner, getting through an every day life... now it's killing a big evil monster. It's just so out of place for this series. They basically made Lorelei fight larger than life things instead of fighting her own problem and I think that's one reason why her characterization suffered. These games' stories are fueled by the protagonists' own wants, needs and struggles. Lorelai felt bad all the time for sure but she never really struggled and her wants and needs are the same: getting out of an abusive home. She doesn't make for a compelling narrative sadly. Jimmy the Traveler was also extremely pointless and Lorelei's step father was just. unfittingly cartoonlishly evil like. Both of them threw me off so much. Sorry btw for these long paragraphs you're like the only person who makes in depth videos about this series. Your videos are really good, keep up the good work! P.S.: An easter egg you missed: Lorelai's family had a painting called "The Crying Boy" hung on the wall. This painting is a famous haunted painting that causes housefires but the painting itself is miraculously never damaged.

I remember myself getting hyped for Lorelai but ultimately feeling a little bit dissapointed in the end, I don't know, felt like a bit anticlimactic to me. Golden ending earned very easily, bad ending seems like a regular ending and even Lorelai herself wasn't very fleshed out. I mean, I empathize with her but she seemed less of a character then Susan or Joe, they were very compelling. Maybe she also needed some mental problems? Also the whole thing with Queen of Maggots was very vague and left for interpretation, which I usually like but here it's like The Queen is a metaphor fro depression or trauma but ALSO she is a literal devil and it was like ... what? what was the bit with Lorelai in the Downfall? She told this to Agnes because she thought that Lorelai could become the new Queen or it was just the teaser for the nest game? I read that after the Cat Lady, Rem planned to make Lorelai then decided to remake the Downfall and apparently Lorelai was more fleshed out for him in the process, which left me with an impression that the third game would be more about Queen's origin and instead we barely have answers instead of a vague ones, overall maybe it was more of anticipations/reality thing for me. Also fun Easter Egg that really fucked me up - if you break the bottle when Al meets the Cat Lady she makes him buy one because it's a 1+1 deal yada yada and that messed me was that in the end of this section, when Al leaves she says to her cat "Fancy a cigarette Mitzy?" She named her cat Mitzy and made her a similar sweater! It even made me think that maybe Mitzy wasn't even real in the first game because of this lol, but I think it just shows how Susan misses her after she died of cancer. Anyway, watching your recapping and analyzing this series made to caught on some details I overlooked and appreciate this games even more, thanks!
