Lore, you have the right to speak about anything. Do not ever let people take that away from you. Your race, gender, experience, etc... have no bearing on what you can speak about, or have opinions on. If anyone is silenced, we all lose a lot.

I agree. But, I do think its valuable to realize where you have less knowledge from which to draw upon. Let's take it out of hot zones into something more benign. I don't know anything about wrestling. I've never watched it, never followed it. Of course I am still allowed to speak about it, but what are the chances that my opinion is going to be useful or free of misunderstandings/errors? Knowing that, I would approach it in very general terms and with a light touch, that's the smart approach. I think that's how Lore handles these sorts of topics and I think that's the smart approach. Are you ALLOWED to speak on it? Of course. Are you well equipped to speak on it? That's more complicated.

@@ShadowDogProduction that's not all of the arguement people are making. Non straight white males can comment on anything they by your standard "not well equipped to handle" by there race and gender and orientation but that tactic is only used again straight white men to shut down conversation or to delegitimize straight white men's opinions. But if a straight white male said your not a straight white male, your opinions about straight white men are illegitimate because you can never know a straight white males lived experience. That is considered out of bounce. Don't you see the ridiculousness of that arguement in any direction? It's not an intelligent rebuttal and it adds nothing to the conversation. Any conversations. It just poisons the well. I have a unique experience with racism against me growing up in foster care living in the ghetto. I am equipped to talk about this because I have experience hardcore racism and hate crimes daily growing up. I have life experience being hated and being insulted for being white. What I am trying to say is all of our arguments on the subject should be treated based on the assertions & what points the persons makes. Opinions should be taken seriously based on the merit of the arguement not the color of the person's skin first then the merit of the arguement

Interesting note, when I went to captains mast, I was informed by my JAG that if I plead guilty at a Captain's Mast or Court Marshall ensures a less severe punishment. Generally the lowest the Judge can get away with while appeasing the requirements of justice. Whereas an innocent please found guilty will almost always get the most severe the regs will allow. And yes, I was guilty, I punched an officer who had put my entire work-center at risk for radiation poisoning. I plead guilty and got reset of of my time in rank and lost half my wages for three months. The officer pled innocent to reckless endangerment of enlistendmen under his command and ended up losing his cushy administrative billet.

I love the Guinan and Ro scene in 10 Forward. I especially love when Guinan says "it is the start of an interesting friendship", Ro replies "I don't stay in one place long enough to make friends" to which Guinan says "too bad, you just did" and walks away. It is a great way for Guinan to tell Ro that she has a friend now without being too sappy about it. Great acting by Whoopi Goldberg and Michelle Forbes.

My head canon reasoning on the slow development of the Bajorans comes from the fact that they had, at least for a portion of their history, a caste system. Also, we are here for your opinion. If someone says you shouldn't even speak on an issue in Star Trek, then thank them for their input and speak anyway. This is your platform. Thank you for another great show.

I feel like we don't know enough about the politics to know why the Federation is keeping their distance from Bajor. Take real politics and Hong Kong right now. With what's going on in China, there's a lot of public sentiment in Canada that we should step in, but if the government of Canada steps in and acknowledges Hong Kong's independence while simultaneously refusing to accept similar independence movements internally, it opens up a very messy pandora's box. Given that the Bajorans would be hardly united in even accepting aid let alone reaching out for it, and how the Cardassians would spin such aid for their own politic benefit, it makes sense for the Federation to remain hands off rather than step in and stir the pot any further.

The one thing that really annoyed me about this episode, even when I was a kid, was the discussion of her name. She says that most "Bajora" reverse the traditional order of their names "in order to assimilate." To which the question has to be - assimilate with whom? You mean to tell me that Starfleet, which encompasses not only aliens but recruits from many Earth cultures who handle their names in the exact same way as Bajorans, doesn't have this information right there at the top of everyone's personnel file? It does what it wants in terms of characterisation, but they should have thought up a more subtle mistake for her to correct - this one makes Starfleet look like a bunch of blundering, US-centric dolts.

The situation with Ro and the "polite" Bajoran diplomat foreshadows in a sense our experience with the Iraq War. Ahmed Chalabi would be the "polite" choice that had ingratiated himself into the West but had no real sway. Whereas the person she recommends would in essence be akin to the Moqtada Al-Sadr of the Bajorans. Not on the list, but an actual REAL player who had the ear of the people. As Lore might say "Not going to get into politics, but yeah..."

One thing that always irked me when watching this episode, was When Riker gives her s*** about her earring not being in Starfleet uniform regulation standards while worf is standing nearby with his big metal sash. I wish if I could rewrite anything in Star Trek the next generation it would have had her call riker out in his hypocrisy. I think this would have underlined the story narrative on how possibly she's both guilty and being unfairly judged.

A possible explanation for the Bajora/Bajoran discrepancy: "Bajoran" was always meant to be the name of the species while "Bajora" was meant to refer to this specific group of people. As for the Federation not getting involved in the occupation, it's possible that the Cardassians told them that any interference would be viewed as an act of war or there could have already been a treaty that said that the Cardassians "own" all the planets in XYZ systems. I could see the Federation being willing to sacrifice a single non-member planet to prevent a war with Cardassia.

Having just watched "The First Duty" last night, it's interesting to hear you describe Ro Laren having disobeyed orders and gotten people killed, and compare that with Nicholas Locarno, who disobeyed Starfleet Academy law and got a person killed. The main difference is that Nick tried to cover it up.

An important difference, but I'd argue not the main one. One assumes Ro had a better reason for her disobedience than a desire to show off.

It seems the Cardassians probably annexed Bajor pretty quickly so by the time the Bajorans did request help from the Federation, they were legally inside Cardassian space. Certainly, at that point, the Cardassians considered Bajor to be inside their space. Hence it became an "internal matter". Helping Bajor would have required violating Cardassian space which would have risked a war. Basically, the Federation used the "we don't meddle in the internal affairs of others" argument as an excuse because they did not wanting to risk a war with the Cardassians. I am sure the Federation was saddened by what was happening to Bajor but keeping the peace with the Cardassians was deemed more important than helping one small planet.

I counted three uses of the word "Bajora" in this episode, and two of them were in contexts where it would make sense if you assume that "the Bajora" was the name of a ship that Insurgent Guy was traveling around in to perform his terrorist acts. Said ship later proves not to actually exist, but it would still make sense if it had been presumed to. Only one of the uses of "Bajora" actually has to be taken specifically as referring to the race of people, rather than the specific group of insurgents that are going and doing things.

Interesting observation: Why is Guinan so great, even from her very first appearance the very first start of S2? Is it Whoopy's influence or did they 'gave' the character completely to Whoopy's own interpretation? It's like lightning in a bottle that only is equaled by De Lancie in the "good" Q-episodes.

Just wanna say I was kinda on the fence when you (Lore) argued for Federation intervention in the Klingon civil war, but here I'm 100% with you: They should've been helping the Bajorans at least in a humanitarian manner for a long time before this. This mirrors my views on humanitarian crises in real life and the frequent lack of political will in the international community to do something about it, e.g. the Rohingya situation in Bangladesh/Myanmar.

I suspect this episode is a very important one, not least because it gave us a character overwhelmingly more interesting than Riker, Deanna, Geordi or Beverly--yet there was nowhere for this character to go! Officers on TNG might be promoted, but they almost never ever change jobs. Frankly Ro was on the fast track to replace Worf when IRL he got an assignment elsewhere, then become someone's Executive and eventually command of her own (initially small) ship. But that never happens on TNG. Just as people don't disagree, the Federation generally has no systemic flaws just a few bad apples, etc. Yet those problems in the story and background were pretty much absent in all subsequent TREKs. Many thanks for a fine analysis and review!

One potential other head-canon explanation for the lousy ship: All warfare is based on deception. Orta knows this. So if he has warp-capable ships, he'd be a fool to tell the Cardassians that he has them. Also, he knows this ship is likely to be destroyed if Picard's efforts to expose the conspiracy against him succeed, so if he's going to lose a ship the one he wants to lose is the worst ship he has at his disposal, not the best ship. He also gains nothing by telling the Federation about any stronger forces he has: Orta has every reason to suspect a mole is working with the Cardassians, so whatever the Federation knows the Cardassians know. He also knows that appearing to be too weak to get anywhere will convince the Federation better than anything else that he didn't attack their colony. My favorite scene in this has to be the "you were innocent bystanders" speech by Keeve Falor. It's an excellent version of the argument that if you're not part of the solution, you're part of the problem, and also a common bullying dynamic in that the victim gets no support from the random bystanders (who fear becoming a target themselves).

I really wish Lieutenant Ro was in season 1 of DS9 *with* Kira. She’s supposed to be the middle ground, but instead she acts as a catalyst which Sisko ends up bridging. And then you can have the two Bajoran women in conflict. “You ran away.” “You became a monster.” And that dynamic could continue until either 1: the Maquis happened and Ro goes to infiltrate them and joins Voyager. Or 2: The Dominion War happens and Ro goes to the front lines and they effectively switch roles.

They never said they would be _federation_ ships. Just using a small bit of influence could have gotten them some second hand ships from anyone else that are far below the measure of the federation but sufficiently higher than what they had. Picard in "Emissary" (DS9) says that Bajoran has had a continuous civilization for 500 *thousand* years. While humans were certainly upright at that point, Homo Sapiens didn't exist back then. I don't buy that they never had real space travel: the solar ship that Sisko just makes for fun is actually really, really advanced. They also have native impulse ships of various sizes, which almost certainly existed before the occupation. I personally think that they had rises and ebbs, and that their society has been at one of the low points for the last few centuries (which, in terms of their civilizational age, isn't really that much at all).

You start to see why the Federation was getting creamed by the Klingons in 'Yesterday's Enterprise' when you see the High Command staffed with Admirals like Admiral Kennelly. Seems like a born intriguer. The worst kind of senior leader, the kind that loves Byzantine Intrigue. I wouldn't assume the Admiral was ignorant about the capabilities of the Bajoran terror cells. He was just aiming for 'credit' with the Cardassians. They were the big players at the game table. The opponents to build a career on, using as a foil. No one gives a damn about ragtag refugees. I suppose he wanted the Enterprise and Picard as his tools in order to add credibility to his selling of his initiatives to Star fleet Command. That was his mistake, but it almost worked. Ensign Ro was an inspired choice of agent.

I am someone who loathes the religion/science divide that is often seen in science fiction. My take on the Bajorans being an 'old' culture but not an advanced one is that their religion allowed them to be 'satisfied' with being on a single planet. They had explorers and warriors and such, but for their society as a whole, they were content with what they had. This was of course destroyed by the Cardassians and now they are actually interesting because they are now in conflict. I also suspect that the Prophets might also have something to do with it.

Regarding the admiral's offer of ships... 1. Space is #@&*%-ing BIG. So yes, you can hide a ship in it. 2. The admiral could have acquired ships from non Federation sources. They'd be less advanced, but they would be infinitely better than the warp-inert junk that Orta has. 3. The offer didn't need to be real. Remember, Orta was NOT supposed to survive.

1.) "Quick side-note: This episode occurs on the Cardassian border, which is way over here. In four episodes we're going to Romulus, which is way up here." Maybe that's because the makers of all those non-canon Star Trek "maps" didn't know what they were doing. Just putting that out there. I have NEVER seen a Star Trek "map" that didn't have obvious, glaring mistakes. 2.) As for the Bajorans being such an ancient civilization (architects, artists, builders and philosophers when Humans weren't yet standing erect = WOW!) and yet being so technologically primitive.... Who says they have to be technologically advanced? Granted, it is an oddity in the Trek universe, where technological advancement appears to be the name of the game for EVERY species we encounter (even one-off species), for the Bajorans to be so "behind" while having such a long history. However, from pretty much every, single piece of evidence we're given about the Bajorans (from TNG, DS9 and even VOY) they seem to be a much more contemplative race than most. Maybe they just weren't interested in advancing technologically. Maybe they just wanted to make great art/architecture, develop philosophy and worship/contemplate the Prophets instead of becoming engineers and scientists. Is there anything inherently wrong with that? Just because virtually every other Trek race would rather be scientists who develop the latest and greatest technology doesn't mean the Bajorans have to be that way. I applaud Trek for actually doing something different with this culture; it makes them unique. And isn't that what Trek supposedly is about - people being cool with others being different than you are?

We really don't know enough about how the Occupation started to really know why the Federation didn't help. We can make some assumptions though. One the Bajorans didn't have a starfleet, or at least not one capable of fighting off the Cardassians. Second I think it's reasonable that if we were talking about an invasion scenario that the Cardassians moved really fast. That they were able to present the rest of the Galaxy a fait accompli. Getting them back out quickly would involve a war with the Cardassians similar to Desert Storm, only much worse. The other possibility is that the Cardassians had been invited in to Bajor, at least in part. Say a major famine hit Bajor. We know that Bajor and Cardassia had been in contact for sometime and MOST of that history has been at least amicable. We also don't know how long Cardassia has been a fascist state so if you suddenly find yourself in trouble who are you going to ask for help, the near by neighbor who you've been on good terms with for centuries or the Federation who are relative new comers. Then the Cardassians take advantage of the situation and bam it's arguably an internal matter. Just my two cents.

It should be well within Starfleet's capability to provide ships. Wolf 359 caused the destruction of 39 ships. We can probably assume that a few other ships tried to get in the Borg's way on the way there so let's assumed 50ish ships overall. That is probably significant in terms of what Starfleet has in the local area of Earth but that's not that big a fleet. Discovery at one point mentions that there are 7000 ships that comprise Starfleet. Now not all them are going to battle capable. Some of them are going to be transports and small science vessels and so on but that number seems far more believable to me. By the 24th Century Starfleet should be almost double that if not more.

do not take Disco as cannon... I would say (in the original setting) at the time Starfleet had maybe five or six dozen large ships, plus a few hundred advanced shuttle/runabout type vehicles... high warp capable ships are still hideously expensive, sort of like the capital ships in modern navies... remember, the Federation has just a couple of docks, by far the biggest/fastest, producing only a ship only every 3 years or so... smaller vessels yes, there is a good number of them, *(and it is my headcannon that's what they were talking about) but they are not really the kind of ships that form The Fleet

29:20. To fire my headcannon on the 'plot hole': One of the ways I've always taken the Cardasians is that their government ha been taken over by petty power hungry gulls as we often hear. This results in Cardassian politics kind of falling over itself. This is why the VOY Dreadnought made perfect sense to me. Right quick I wanna say I always took it that the Bajorans are the race the Bajora are this specific group. So my head cannon could easily see, decades ago some Gull made the political move of kicking this group off the planet to seem tough. Now, some other gull has heard about that group, and so now to discredit the other gull the Bajora have been drummed up into representing the growing Bajoran terrorists threat and must be destroyed now; so with a glorious parade and big speech a massive force of 3 galors went forth to protect Cardassia from this other gulls stupidity.

No. Different actress, different character. Similar hair style.

I will say I didn't like this episode as a kid I like it as an adult because alot of the story elements go into what we would see in later Trek. The big issue in this is world building and character elements. I hate that Riker calls Ro out for her earring but Worf and Troi do have uniform issues. I hate how the Federation does come off tone deaf and hasn't given any aid to the Bajorans at this point. Some of these world building elements would be fixed in DS9 where the Cardassians at this point still hold many Bajoran terrorists under their control, so aid being given was an issue.

Originally watching this episode was when I realized the franchise was changing. Great actors in a great setting with dumb writing that has characters act out of character and illogically in order to contrive melodrama. Yes, it's a very entertaining episode, until you start thinking about how every scene doesn't make sense. Every line of dialog doesn't make sense in the setting. Literally nothing would have happened in this episode if it had been thought out and consistent with what had been established. Logic and setting is handwaved to get to the melodrama. And if you don't think, or know about the characters and setting, it's really entertaining. I stuck with Trek until DS9 when I realized the franchise had become "ordinary petty people in space" with no high ideals, and no aspirational story telling. Standard ugly people doing ugly things story telling which has dominated mainstream media since the late '80s with the ugly characters played by the most beautiful people in the world.

I don't like this Character, nor the Bajor and Cardassian on TNG. I find this episode weak but it's pure my taste. About be white, male and heterosexual.. Lore, every one has the right to talk about anything, take this right from you is actually racism, sexism and prejudice.

How could lore preach against himself and all other straight white men being barred from certain conversations and not understand the self shame he is propagating upon himself and others (but has no idea how bad Ensign Roe feels to be ashamed of herself)? Lore literally thinks less of his opinions based on his race and of others who look like him because of his race and sexual orientation, but could not understand it in Ensign Row? And he is displaying his anti self anti white & very racist opinions on others so they can also think less of themselves too. But claims he cant imagine the burden of what Row is feeling? I feel the anti straight white male messages in media every day and it sucks. Now this guy is worse he is spreading it & pretending like he has no idea what its like. You probably couldn't even do this job if it weren't for the straight white men who contribute to your income. Thanks for calling us straight white men out and taking a giant dump us all. I am certain this message will get removed but everything I said is true. Lore should have a disclaimer at the top of every video. I will take straight white males money preach about how he believes he shouldn't give certain opinions either because of immutable characteristics millions of people share. But he will take your money
