I was intimidated with grafting for years. I finally tried it a couple years ago, after studying various ways, and failed miserably. This was a kick in the apples for my confidence, as I didn’t wanna ruin trees I invested in. After seeing and hearing how simple Paul Gautschi made it, with the exact graft mentioned in this video(the cleft graph), I never had another grafting failure. All I use is a knife and cheap black electrical tape. All the grafts started budding, no joke, a week later and I never looked back! Thanks for covering this Billy!

Billy, this is the first video from you that I didn't fully understand. As a new homesteader I heard words I've never heard of (scion??). I saw that the process looks easy enough but I didn't get putting what onto what and where they came from etc. I think I need to read an in depth book so I understand it more or watch other videos. This was the first grafting video I ever saw so It's not you.... It's definitely me, lol. But now that I saw it, I want to learn all about it and save money. We were just talking about plans for planting an orchid so it will produce in a few years. This is our first year on our homestead and we have so much to do. Still didn't get to the comfrey planting (sigh). Hopfully today!

" propagating root " - is Air Layering - you do that right on the branch you want to prune off later - by starting the roots on the branch, prune off the branch& planting it in the soil

What was the name of the root stock supplier you mentioned? I have heard that growing from seed may give better tap root. If so, would it be better to use seed from some of the old orchard apples that are still around up here in Vermont or use seed from locally grown newer trees? Thank you for sharing your knowledge Rich

We are in Northern Vermont. I am sure a number of old trees on and around our place have to be 75-100+ years old. So I know they can handle the weather. Their fruit is mediocre. I am sure they were cider trees. I would plan on grafting to the root stock. Stefan Sobkowiak mentions letting one limb grow from original just to see if you like the flavor of the apple lottery. Would seeds from a local tree that was grown on disease resistant root stock carry the resistance with it?

One important advantage to grafting is assuming you have the correct scion, you know for sure what variety you have. At a place like walmart I have found more than a 50% error rate in mislabelling. To prevent cutting myself, it helps a lot to remove any point from your knife. In the field when grafting to say a feral persimmon I do it pretty much like Randall showed. But If I have a bundle of rootstock and I work from a table I use wax and rubber bands. Once in the sun with time the rubber bands decay and when the scion and rootstock grow the wax will crack and full off. For longer term scion storage one can simply wax the ends of the scion wood and place in a seal plastic baggie with a dampened bit of towel. A certain percentage of bleach can be used slow down bacterial fungi. I would have to check on what the bleach percentage is and store everything in the fridge. During the days of sailing ships I believe people managed to transport some grafts. But planting seeds I think is the way it was most often done.

I live in Texas and only 1 type of red apple will grow here because we have so few chill days. The only “Anna” apple tree I could find was from a lady who grafted it onto another Washington state apple tree variety. This spring there are 3 apples growing on the Anna apple tree grafted branch but not any on the bigger Washington state main apple tree. So I am a fan of grafting especially if you have a mature variety that doesn’t produce fruit in your area.

I've been growing peach trees since the 2020 pandemic. The first trees I purchased and they were bare root. Then, I saw a youtube video about growing from seed. So, I saved all my store bought peaches and tried to stratify in the fridge. I had poor success. I did however keep finding peach seedling in my yard where I spread my compost. I have found it very easy to grow peaches from seed simply by putting the seeds in my compost bin.

So I'm assuming that you can't just take cuttings from the dwarf and make rootstock? Do all apples come from an apple tree called rootstock thats only purpose is to make rootstock?.... Thanks for the reply I love your content!
@Jesse_was_here
@Jesse_was_here Жыл бұрын
Typically you have a rootstock, which is a type of tree that’s known for its rooting or tree size qualities. You graft scion wood(live branch cuttings from another type of the same species, usually fruit trees) to the root stock. This allows for an older more developed root system to “power” the newly grafter trees. A great example is Bradford pears. They are an invasive pear tree that has terrible fruit, but grows quickly. You can graft many types of pears onto this rootstock, pears that actually taste good. You get the best of both worlds, fast growing and good fruit. Another reason to graft is to have many type of pears, apples, cherries, etc on a single tree for space saving and cross pollination on a single tree. Hope this helps!
