The reason the Ice cream machine is always busted is because the company that makes the Ice Cream machine for McDonalds wants to keep their monoply on repairs, in fact most of their money comes from repair call outs (and it's specifically the one company that has a contract with McDonalds, notice how no other fast food places ice cream machine breaks down nearly as often). It has a virtually indecipherable error code system which can mean anything from 'needs the cleaning cycle run again' to 'parts malfunction' and they won't let McDonalds employees or owners know what error code means what. It got to the stage where some people managed to get hold of a Service Engineer's manual and created an app which told you *exactly* what was wrong the machine...the company took them to court. McDonald's don't care because they're not the ones paying the repair cost and they get Ice Cream Machines done cheap. This is why Right to Repair is such a big thing.

@@Quadrophiniac the subject of right to repair is something I personally take to heart. I'm a huge friggin nerd, a software engineer, and have worked as an auto mechanic. I really enjoy being able to take my personal devices and belongings and repairing or maintaining them without a company forcing me to do business with them. I offer to my friends and family all sorts of advice, research, and skills when it comes to avoiding going back to the manufacturer, because it's so much cheaper to do so. Even if someone is not capable of repairing something they own (by lack of skill, time, etc..), they should have the choice of who they can contract to make the repair. I thank that you took the time to research into the subject. I just really hope more people do the same and put pressure on their legislators to pass laws on allowing the right to repair.

There's actually an entire lawsuit going with McDonalds, the Machine Manufacturer, and a third party parts & software company that found a workaround. Basically, the Ice Cream Machine company has an exclusivity to parts and repair with the machines and any problem now matter how small that even could be resolved with a an internal breaker flip has to be done by the manufacturer. The third party made a simple software and app add-on that allows the franchisee owners of the McDonalds pull up the error code and troubleshoot the problem themselves saving them thousands and thousands of dollar. So now the manufacturer is sueing for "breach of contract" even though the current contract essentially extorts the franchisee and McDs won't do anything about it. Lawfull Masses by Leonard French, his YT channel has a at least one video, maybe a second one, where he goes over the court docket for the lawsuit and the details etc. it's really fascinating and just further shows how the right to repair is violently stifled here in the US.

When I worked at mcdonalds, I had the job of cleaning the ice cream/ milkshake machine. It was a 2-3 hour process that needed to be done every 2 weeks, in the morning , since only true weirdos wanted a shake or cone at 7am. The only annoying parts were emptying it of mix( especially if people the night before decided that they needed to fill it just before closing...) and cleaning the milkshake flavor lines(sticky syrups that took awhile to get out of the line with water.) Apparently other stores didn't clean out the syrup lines and they would start fermenting. Ugh.

how frequently it has to be cleaned normally depends on where it is. McD have their own rules, but local health rules sometimes require far more frequent cleaning. In Denmark we have public inspection reports and the ice cream and soda machines are nearly always on the list of "inadequately cleaned" at every other fast food place, not just McD. Those machines are also gross and a pita to clean, so it's not really surprising it doesn't get done properly in an industry where a good portion of the employees are minors

It's because each machine is made to be repaired by like one specific technician (that doesn't work for mcdonalds I think) and getting them to show up is difficult and the machines break down constantly. That's if I remember right.

i worked at maccas for four years.We cleaned the ice cream machine once every two weeks, thorough cleaning. Like someone would spend 4-5 hours just to clean it. The reason they are always broken is they overheat from massive use, or the ice cream solution didn't have a chance to freeze because it didn't get topped up enough because everyone was ordering it. I am sure there are some that rarely get cleaned, but its not the reason they all break down

I haven't worked there or 4-5 years, so fuzzy memory, but I remember there was only one company we could call to fix it at that time, but you have maccas all over the world, so there must be multiple companies. Most the time when its 'broken' we are just waiting for it to freeze so we can serve it properly, but i remember that taking like 20-30 minutes some times.

I believe they do it the same way that many other companies that sell products at a loss do their business, Sell the machines at a loss, ramp up the repair costs. You'll see plenty of documentaries and journalism done on this subject. Johnny Harris covered it in depth in fact.

There's a documentary that even points out that someone made an app that solves the entire issue, and the company had it shut down because that interfered with the scheme. @@leejohnson8102 For McDonalds it's exactly like that. There is one company called "Taylor" that all maintenance gets funneled through for their McD ice cream machines. The company was actually recently sued by a small startup company called Kytch, who developed a device to help detect issues these machines commonly have that make them shut down for maintenance. Taylor put out a company-wide notice to McDonalds stores saying the Kytch devices were "unsafe" for the machines without any backing evidence, and now Kytch is suing for defemation. This is why Right To Repair is so important. Fuck the industries that monopolize repair and maintenance of machines in order to inflate the cost and put it back into their own pockets. If they can't even keep their machines working properly, I'd pay a local repair shop $150 to open it up and fix it same day rather than pay $1000+ to have a company-licensed mechanic fly in and tell me it was a minor software glitch or something.

They don't have kimchi in Korean McDonald's but they do, however, have a bulgolgi burger which is VASTLY better than any regular burger McDonald's otherwise has. You can also order McDonald's pretty much anywhere you are in Korea and they'll deliver it to you. Sitting in some random park? They'll bring it to you! In an office cubicle? They'll run it all the way to your floor and walk it to you!! Delivery services in Korea are really next level and living there spoiled me lol

The Mcdonalds ice cream thing was caused by ONE company having the exclusive right to repair the ice cream machines. Employees weren't allowed to fix it themselves and the company overcharged franchise owners (Who aren't McDonalds just the people that pay to run their stores). Theres a couple other details im forgetting but TLDR: Ice cream machine monopoly

The Taylor McDonald's ice cream machines are the only machines the franchise can own. They are designed to break. Taylor machines arent bad... But the exclusive machine to McDonald's breaks more than any others. There's a few really great videos on the subject on KZbin. A guy created a diag tool that allowed shops to fix their issues easily (most of the time it is pretty much nothing) Taylor and McDonalds sent cease and desists and McDonalds told franchises they were barred from using it and instead to continue to pay Taylor thousands per year for repairs.
