The crazy thing is this rep's mom is a commissioner for Mecklenburg county who is progressive and voted for Bernie at the DNC convention back in 2016. Examples include what's happening in NC with the Cothams (hopefully it's just rumours and not true), Pete Buttigieg and his Marxist professor father, Lisa Nandy and her Marxist father, David Milliband and his Marxist father, Clement Attlee's grandson being a big Tory, and many more. I know most were UK examples but I bet someone with more polisci knowledge could find more American examples.

Unfortunately, we lost the SD-8 election by a hair, which means state republicans hold impeachment power, but they can't really do anything unless they try to impeach multiple people at once, which would definitely bring about repercussions, not the least of which would likely be recall attempts on a lot of them.

I'm not sure if it's still true, but what I've heard about gerrymandering for the two parties is that Republicans are willing to gerrymander in "risky" ways, to try to grab more districts, even if it makes their hold over specific districts shakier, whereas Democrats will gerrymander to solidify their control over specific districts so that they can keep their seats, even if it means their party is likely to have less districts.

Was feeling down about awful news in state legislatures in Tennessee, Florida, and North Carolina, but outcomes like Wisconsin, Chicago, and others in the last few years show that a *lot* of people are getting fed up with this current iteration of the Republican party. Polling always shows how hated the GOP's platform is (so much so that many people *refuse to believe you* when you tell them what's in their regular agenda, and this goes back to circa 2010!), but now they're seeing it play out, particularly with the loss of abortion rights. About time voters began reacting appropriately at the ballot box.

all of that "nothing land" is a bunch of forest and farmlands, which Wisconsin raises cattle to make CHEESE as well as the forests supporting species like maples, birches, aspen, spruces, and pines. However, I do get the notion of the areas that would "need" to be settled to an extent, if such people can bring in talent as well as dealing with severely cold and long winters, then it could be up to 10-25 people per square mile or even up to the light green category, albeit being symbiotic about land use and whatnot.

It would be easy enough to just mandate that each county/parish/whatever was a district for voting. That way when someone wanted to change anything it would have a real impact on direct local elections and people would flip their sh!t when they changed school districts and property tax codes so someone team could score one political win. Should create a negative feedback loop to prevent such shenanigans.

Now you need to fight for a more democratic voting system. Proportional representation in the state upper house and either mixed member proportional or single member preferential voting for electorates in the lower house. This will loosen the grip of the two party system and and force both the Dems and the GOP to split into smaller parties, enable other small parties such as the Greens and Labor Parties to win seats, ushering in a truely representative multi-party democracy, at least at the state level.

Straight proportionality alone isn’t really the best way to measure gerrymandering. For example, you also want districts to be responsive in the sense that a shift in the state wide vote should correspond to a roughly similar shift in the number of seats held by each party. You also want districts to comply with racial requirements under the voting rights act and to be somewhat compact, following existing jurisdictional boundaries like county lines and city lines, and grouping together similar communities of interest where applicable. Those goals can trade off with straight proportionality sometimes
@cobaltcorsair592 Жыл бұрын
Racial requirements? I'm not American, so I don't know what that is, but it sounds like a bad thing.
@dylanb265 Жыл бұрын
@@cobaltcorsair592 Ok I totally understand where this sentiment comes from, but America has a unique history with this sort of thing. Basically voting is EXTREMELY polarized by race in a lot of America (especially black and white voters in the American southeast) to the point where a lot of states before the passage of the Voting Rights Act (and some after it) basically drew districts designed to minimize the impact of minority voters. The VRA therefore creates certain requirements for not splitting up minority voters in states where they exist in large enough numbers and in geographically connected enough communities to draw districts that could allow those minority voters to form a practical majority of the voter base. It's why you get districts represented by members of Congress like Sanford Bishop, Terri Sewell, Jim Clyburn, Bennie Thompson, etc. However, this does lead to some oddly-shaped districts. For example, Chicago has some districts populated mostly by Latino voters who live in somewhat separated parts of the city, but who are connected into the same district to give them a chance to elect a representative chosen predominantly by Latinos in the area, rather than having those voters diluted by white and black voters in more nearby neighborhoods.
@gudmundursteinar Жыл бұрын
Both sides Gerrymander, but, since the political divide is often rural vs urban the Republicans have an advantage in Gerrymandering since you can easily make contiguous districts with a 20+ Democratic lean. Ultimately the solution has to be, either, making the districts much smaller and created by a non-partisan comission like in the UK (where districts have 70k people compared to 700k in the US) or you need to simply resort to proportional representation with multi member districts that might cover multiple states or increase the size of congress to about 1000 or 1500 and have many more representatives (this requires removing the electoral college as well).

Gov Evers can just appoint a replacement, no matter what the WISGOP does they can’t impeach Evers without a lower chamber supermajority too. To be fair I fully expect them to kick and scream all they can, but if the Supreme Court strikes down the current state legislature maps, it won’t matter, because by 2025 they may not even have a majority in either chamber, much less a supermajority.

The thing is, Michigan was produced by merely undoing Republican gerrymandering. Most gerrymandering is done to protect incumbents and/or strengthen rural representation even in blue states beyond what should be proportional as for economic reasons involving regionalism. As in the districts are to create in state legislatures a larger but permanent number of "safe" seats.
@connortobin3775 Жыл бұрын
So as a heads up the 4th district of IL is actually famously NOT gerrymandered, and is a viable district that perfectly represents its population. IL has a law that districts must be single, contiguous masses, and that suspicious gap right there is a massive highway system from the old redlining days. The 4th district is a historically Latino/hispanic majority district surrounded by a LOT of white-majority districts that would otherwise gobble them up and reduce their voice. This way they actually have representation at the county & state levels.
