Done on purpose... SPOILER ALERT... the church is purgatory. The island is probably redemption (6x16 - what they died for, listen to Jacob's speech). This is an alternate timeline where the characters are a different version of themselves. You'll be able to read more about that on lostpedia and you'll find some plausible theories on KZbin

@@Splub Season 6 was a flash sideways, an alternate timeline of sorts. They’re all essentially the same people, just with different outcomes. What’s satisfying is that they all still meet AFTER 815 lands this time.

@@Lava91point0 the island was a chance given to people to redeem themselves or make themselves mean something. once they died, they met in purgatory, which is depicted in the 'flash-sideways'. At the end of the show, I'm pretty sure they go to 'heaven' which is the big white bright door in the church at the end with a bunch of the characters together. this is by no means an alternate universe/timeline. that wouldn't really make sense at all

Not necessarily true. Ben changed on the Island because Sayid shot him, he got "revived" by the Temple and changed or "lost his innocence". That's likely what kickstarted that entire thing. But since this timeline the Oceanic 815 never crashed on the Island... no Sayid to shoot him as a kid.

Seems to be a lot of people that think the flash sideways was an alternate timeline. It isnt the flash side ways, is basically purgatory. This is explained by the "awakenings" of the memories of there actual lifes tbe Christian explaining it to Jack. What makes this scene good is the difference with Ben and his fathers relationship and that it was mended in purgatory in a sense. Which reflects Bens growth as a person likely from his time under Hurley as the island protector.

Spoilers!!!!!! The purgatory was a heavenly place where the survivors could get emotional resolutions to the pains and traumas that happened to them in real life. It gave them a place to get/give forgiveness for their wrongdoings to each other. It gave them a place to shed their mortal scars and for their souls to heal. And once that was done, all their debts were paid and all their issues resolved on Earth. They were ready for whatever comes next…….beautiful ending. This show was primarily about humans living in the moral grey area between the two sides, one is light, one is dark. The immoral brotherly enemies bring people to the island, to prove the other one wrong. That the scales aren’t balanced in humans, Jacob believes they lean towards the light, and MIB believes the opposite. Also should be noted that Jacob also brings them to the island to help them. Their lives back home were not happy ones to say the least. “you needed the island as much as it needed you” No human on the show is 100% good or 100% evil, just like in real life…even hitler loved his dog. It was about character and morality, not mysteries, monsters and magic boxes.
