In the late 70's my best friend and I got lost in the woods outside Fairbanks, AK. No map or compass. The best thing we did was stop the INSTANT we realized neither of us was sure of where we were. We sat down, took some deep breaths and thought about and talked the situation out. We oriented ourselves to the sun, then cleared a spot on the ground and drew a map with known spots on it oriented to roughly north We were able to back track to a known point and were only lost for about an hour. The hollow pit in your stomach feeling you get when you realize your lost is a feeling I never want again.

I am a native Kentucky from the Appalachian Mountains! I love the Daniel Boone quote! “I can't say as ever I was lost, but I was bewildered once for three days.” As quoted in Daniel Boone in “The Life & Legend of an American Pioneer” (1993) by John Mack Faragher page 65.

@@ReichenbachEsq thanks for clarifying Daniel Boone's quote. I'm a Kentucky resident myself! My parents raise 6 of us and the outdoors is still a big part of our life!
@ReichenbachEsq4 ай бұрын
@@recondrone1776 Your quote was correct as well, from my understanding. Daniel Boone made several comments about not being “lost” & all of them are worded a little differently but all are similar. This makes it impossible to get the quote wrong 😆 I suspect what Daniel meant was a “lost” person must be found & saved…& he saved himself & made it home every time so he was technically, never “lost”. Daniel clearly had a sense of humor 😏

I live in the Boreal Forest region of northeastern Ontario Canada . There are places here where you could be three meters from a trail or road and not see it . Realizing and accepting you are lost puts you in a situation where controlling your emotions and calming your mind is the first but most important and difficult thing you must do .

Carry orange reflective tape to tie around trees or hang off branches at impotant points. Carry a machete or big knife and hack into saplings to hinge them over as you go to mark the rest of the way in between the orange tape. Always put a shoe print anywhere it is muddy and be aware what your own shoe print looks like. Often i take sticks and make an arrow on the ground so i know direction of travel if i find my trail again after getting lost. Always look for your path thru the grass and weeds, it will leave everything bent over, you knock off the dew as you go, etc... I've been lost a few times...you either learn the smart way or the hard way... All of these tactics have saved my bacon at one time or another.

Thanks, it's nice to see you again. I also got a bit lost in the forest, but I found my way, so the next time I marked my car on the Google map and I returned without a problem, I used it as a simulation, I knew I would come back because my phone would bring me back but I watched my behavior, and before I turned the navigation back on I saw what mistakes I was making, many times I went in the exact opposite direction, and thanks to this analysis in the future I knew what to look for, so in the forest I didn't know I always marked my car on the map, took care of the batteries and returned with mushrooms, Have a nice day

I used to use a topographical map and a compass. Then I graduated to an electronic compass. I finally got a GPS but still continued to carry the topographical map and a compass. One trip I was in some woods where years ago the farmers had removed all of the trees creating thick undergrowth. I could see no landmarks so the map and even the GPS were of no value. The only thing I could do was follow the compass because I knew in a certain direction I would eventually hit a certain road. Then I had to follow the road the long way back to my truck.

Okay as a Firefighter , we have Left hand or Right search . Okay now imagine you have no visual reference as to where you are going . So to make it clear how hard we rely on visual reference . Easy exercise pick a place you work at , place yourself within a room close or maybe far from an exit .....now think normal entry or if not where you are closer to a closer fire exit . Sounds pretty simply but I will guarantee you will work your way to where you came in . Always look for fire exits as that is your safe and closet route out , or you go the way you came in which will meet a mass of people with the same idea . Now this is a modern fail in navigation , East or West etc no matter If you paid attention you will know your nearest exit . To me in my job in General life this is your life saver . Now in the woods , totally different how ever with google maps and compass apps you have a better understanding and chance of survival . There are no corridors etc but bearings out of where you have gone . If you went west and had to return east later .....compass bearing and maybe lights or land marks etc . Obviously night makes it worse but you can work it out . How ever I am from the UK and in my area we don't have such wide areas of wild Country side . How ever and it has been a while since I was pure map and compass , I still think with old school and modern i will make my way . How ever in mass woods like Lars and his family and friends , local knowledge goes a long way .
