Wow, saw the thumbnail and instantly thought of my childhood growing up in NYC back in the 60's. Those were usually our first pair of roller skates, they didn't go too fast so you learned how to balance yourself. Best part was when one of the wheels went bad we'd take apart the other skate and use a 2 by 4, turn it into a scooter and use that till it fell apart. Thanks for bringing back the memories, nice restoration!

They manufactured this type of roller skates up into the 1960s. When I out grew them, I turned one roller skate into a "sidewalk surffer" by nailing it to a piece of 2x4.

Wow - what memories! My sister and I had noisy metallic skates just like that in Chicago in the 1960s. We'd practice around our house in our Polish / German / Italian neighborhood, and then our parents would take us to The Hub on Harlem Avenue on Saturdays for a giant group skate. The kids were (generally) great; the music (on the huge Wurlitzer theater organ) was phenomenal, and after, we'd walk across the parking lot for a tour of the Maurice Lenell cookie factory. Three decades later, I'd introduce my own kids to skating at Great Skate Roller Rink near Austin Lake in Portage, Michigan. This time we had in-lines, with rubber wheels, with much better ball bearings and ankle support. Thanks for reviving those rusty memories along with the rusty skates!

Roller skating was popular in Japan about 50 years ago, and I used to wear these iron shoes while playing. It was cool to see sparks scatter as the ground rubbed😅

My great uncle gave me these for my birthday when I was about eight. Where I lived on Long Island there weren’t any sidewalks so it was noisy on the road. I had them all my life until I moved and someone swiped them. Too bad for them…I still have the two keys , LOL . I really love your bringing them back to life.🛼

That is awesome, not only restoring the roller skates to working order, but also making a new adjusting key for them. They look much better than before and they work like charms as well. Great work. Just like new.

We all had these skates in the 60's. The Chicago Skate Co. produced the best/earliest precision bearings and quality boot skates with poly-eurethane wheels. I had a pair in 1980 and roller skated to my college classes. These skates are still featured in commercials today, but many 80's movies show them off too. Thanks for the blast from the past and great job too!

We used to make scooters out of our metal skates. We'd nail each half of a skate to either end of a 2 1/2 foot length of 2x4. Then we'd nail a wooden orange crate to one end of the board with its opening facing the other end of the 2x4.. A bar of wood would be nailed to the top of the crate for a handle. We'd stand on one end of the 2x4 with one foot and propel ourselves forward with the other foot on the ground. Some guys would nail an empty tuna-fish can to the crate, in front of the scooter, and put a candle in it which reflected off the metal and served as a headlight. You could put a buddy in the box and give him a ride. Since the scooter was just put together with nails, the crate would eventually fall off. We discovered we could maneuver the scooter without our hands, and the skateboard was invented.

I remember sharing a pair of skates like that I shared with my sister in the early 70’s. We would spend all afternoon in the summer buzzing up and down our driveway and having a blast. I remember my tennis shoes would always pop out and spent half the time ratcheting it down. Those were good times, thanks for the trip down memory lane!

I had a pair like this when I was a kid in the 80s. I don’t know where my parents got them from. They must have been hand-me-downs. They were super noisy, and every little crack in the road or pebble would jerk you to a stop. They were terrible! But it is fun to remember trying to use them. Thanks for the good restoration and the trip down memory lane.

We called them "brother clakers" - if your brother was annoying you you hit'em with it. But if they are on and you kick'em and turn to skate away the toe grip would come undone - you trip - then pay back sets in... Ahhh the 70's...

Just a tip, which I’ve come to use religiously with Evaporust and similar rust removers - once you pull the parts from the soak, spray them with a mixture of 95% white spirits (mineral spirits) to 5% white mineral oil. This will seal the metal with a microfilm of mineral oil and protect metals that are vulnerable to flash rust.

In my hometown located in Venezuela, in the 1960s, all the boys and girls had skates and we went skating in the park, especially at Christmas, which was called Christmas bonuses, while the adults listened to the mass, the boys skated. In the park that was in front of the church, the most famous skates at the time were Chicago, Wester Union and Winchester, what were those times, today all that is over in my region
