Why you should watch it? Great writing, great acting, great characters, mind twisting mysteries. I was never disappointed in the show. I loved every season. I loved the ending. I just discovered "Lost" a few weeks ago in the DVD aisle of the Goodwill store, and I quickly became obsessed. Unfortunately, it's been 20 years and there really are not many people "in the flesh" to talk to about the show. I just went through all six seasons by binge watching. Someone on KZbin said to just watch the show as an experience and don't think too hard about it. And that's what I did, and what a wild ride! (Even Season 6.) Now I'm going through it again slowly, watching all the episodes on DVD with ALL of the bonus features. This channel is the golden thread I need to pull it all together. So I'm just savoring the show with all of its quirkiness.

Have you not seen Twin Peaks? Jar Jar Abrams took the model for Lost from Twin Peaks, that show is the original watercooler show that changed TV viewing. If you haven't seen the series, please do.
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
Yes, that's a fair point to make. 'Twin Peaks' was a big influence on LOST, as was 'The X-Files' and the writings of Stephen King. Plus, it was originally pitched as a fictional dramatic version of the reality show 'Survivor', and thank god it moved away from that lol. But I agree that 'Twin Peaks' could be described as an early watercooler show (although it was cancelled due to declining ratings in its second season), an 'X-Files' was a massive phenomenon too, but not in the same way or to the same level as LOST. Because they were produced in a different, less connected era. An age of innocence, you might say. What I meant in the video is that LOST originated this era's kind of watercooler moment -- the social media age -- in which people all over the world were talking about it both in real life and online. You could connect with total strangers and rabidly discuss the series. The cliffhangers were constant and unlike anything we had seen before in TV. The show was never cancelled and kept up that global audience right until the end, and beyond. The way we talk and argue about film and TV shows today really started with LOST imo.

Fantastic video. LOST is my favourite TV Show, and yet I'm still one of those that was disappointed in the ending. However, I'm certain that the main reason I found it disappointing was because of how amazing the previous 5 seasons were. Which in itself, is a compliment. Season 6 always had to change format slightly, if not drastically, to allow for the story to be wrapped up in a way that LOST had never had to do prior. The show was never about ''wrapping things up'' neatly, it was constantly evolving and remaining fresh. I feel like this is the main reason that so many ''haters'' target the final season, and particularly The End - it simply couldn't compete with previous seasons. It's not that it ended badly, it's just that it HAD to end, and this required quite a shift in the storytelling we were used to.

When the show first came out and I watched it, I was one of those who really was disappointed by the ending. I felt let down because I was so caught up in solving the mysteries that I missed the real point of the show. Now, after so many years and so many rewatches, I absolutely love how the story ended. Apart from everything else, LOST is deep spiritually. When all of the action, adventures, ups, downs, successes, and failures of this life are finally over, the only mystery that really matters is who we really are. In the end, it's all about what we've learned about ourselves, how we connected with others, and then experiencing the joy of returning to the Source. Just one of the many things I love about Lost and the Lost community is that the show was so engaging with so many questions and mysteries, and the community is so invested in answering the questions and solving the mysteries, that almost anything can spark a detailed and passionate debate. One good example related to Cindy the stewardess. In several episodes we see her chasing after Charlie to the restroom at the front of the fuselage, even banging on the door, right before the tail broke off…and yet we see her survive the crash with the tallies. I always wondered how, in just seconds, she got all the way back to the tail just in time for it to break off, and why she would even do that. I searched online for answers and theories (many were confused) none of which I found plausible. Then I found out it it was a retcon by the writers - apparently, Cindy was going to be the one to tell the survivors that the plane was off-course and no one was coming for them, but when they decided to have the pilot stay alive long enough to talk to Jack, Kate and Charlie, they didn’t need here there…but they did need someone to relay that info to the tailies in S2 so they decided it would be her. I thought it was great! The idea that a simple retcon for plot necessity could spark an online debate and a a host of theories just shows how special Lost was.

I marathoned hours of your videos last night. I have been looking for videos connecting the dots in LOST for years and have been surprised nothing good existed. You're doing a great job! I am also a big defender of the finale (though I have issues with the final season as a whole) and it has always frustrated me when I see somebody trashing the series. The week leading up to the finale I was obsessed, I couldn't sleep and had tons of dreams about it. I have rarely felt that intense about a TV show!

I know the exact feeling! Before I started this channel, I always used to search for some comprehensive analysis of the show online but none seemed to exist. Every now and then I still get the odd dream about it, although that might be a result of running this channel lol. Thank you for watching! I've launched the episode guide now, so there will be monthly new content releasing as I go through the show episode by episode.

@LOSTEXPLAINED1084 ай бұрын
My assumption about the Hurley bird (until the epilogue) was that it was one of the many animal manifestations of The Man in Black. Always felt it didn’t need to be specifically explained because that was such an easy if unspoken answer to settle for. What was your preferred theory?
@jordancooperlalala4 ай бұрын
@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 I can't figure out the Man in Black's motivation for doing that. But my theory was, when we're in season 5 and it becomes clear they all start working for Dharma, I was positive we were going to have a brief moment of Hurley working in an aviary and teaching a bird to say his name. Then a few decades later this bird is flying in the jungle and sees his beloved trainer and lets out a happy "HURLEY!!!!!" I thought it would have been a sweet, funny and succinct little "answer", I was surprised it didn't happen. I also at one time thought the whispers might be our main characters time traveling and observing themselves from the bushes, but that turned out to not be the case.

I had an idea for an explained video. What was the story of Paul (Amy's first husband)? Why did the others kill him and why did he have that Ankh necklace. He obviously had some type of connection to Jacob, would be curious to hear your take on it. Thanks for all the great vids!
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
Interesting question, no one has ever asked me about this before to my recollection. Not sure if it would justify its own video per se, but just to give my two cents on it: Paul and Amy were beyond "the line", as agreed in the terms of the truce. Paul wanted to take her to a romantic picnic spot and chose the location poorly. In other words, they were in Hostile territory, which meant that The Hostiles (aka The Others) could punish them for breaching the truce. Paul was killed and Amy was going to be taken, presumably for interrogation. As for the ankh... while it is the personal crest of Jacob, I don't believe that Paul had met Jacob, nor was Jacob the reason he was wearing that item. DHARMA had been studying the Egyptian history on the island for a while, as evidenced by their interest in the frozen donkey wheel and Horace Goodspeed's house being built adjacent to the old summoning chamber for the smoke monster. Even the countdown timer in the hatch featured hieroglyphs as an homage to the Egyptian islanders who had come before DHARMA and had figured stuff out about the energy beneath The Island. Paul was simply one of these historians who was enamoured by the Egyptian history and wore the ankh as a symbol of his interest in it. It's possible that he may have been a candidate at the time of his death, but we have no real evidence in which to draw a definitive conclusion.

I loved the ending. I watched the show well after it was on the air. I had no idea how popular itwas , or anything about it. Quite honestly I thought it seemed the most reasonable ending. It leaves it with story left to tell, yet our main characters story over. There’s plenty of spaces in the text to have different interpretations. In my observation people watch tv shows with different outcomes in mind. Some people are looking for concrete answers to mythology, where others prefer ambiguity. That difference really changes the narrative that surrounds the ending of an epic show. Your videos are well produced, written and sound fantastic. I really enjoy the channel.

I asked my friend Jon that showed it to me, if they were in a form of purgatory. He answered no, as the series had not yet ended. However, I had an NDE back in 2017. My consciousness didn't end, and I had an encounter that left me with a ton of future information, given to me, in order to prove (to me) the validity of the experience. Lost, as it turns out, is the closest explanation to reality, that Ive found, since the experience. Now, I absolutely LOVE the ending, and see the entire series in a different light.

Well done. The almost joke-like reputation that Lost has inexplicably garnered is completely undeserved. That vocal minority who either didn't understand it or mistakenly believed it to be something it wasn't has kept countless new viewers from experiencing a wonderful show that will never be duplicated. I watched it live from episode 1 to The End and thought its conclusion was perfect. As you mentioned, Lost was never going to be able to please everyone after years of debate and theorizing, but the end was fitting for how the show evolved from its early, "Lord of the Flies in the Twilight Zone" beginning, I will admit its not the greatest show of all time -- being a network show forced to fill out long seasons almost guarantees this -- but it remains my favorite show of all time.

Yes, this misinterpretation has persevered throughout the years and is pretty much the worst thing you can say to a LOST fan. I even made a video all about this very subject so that fans could share it and use it as a quick way to end this argument.
@melrupinski889 ай бұрын
Let me through in a couple of more reasons, kind of from a personal standpoint. I never fell into the “they were dead the whole time” camp, but I was one of the people, upon my initial viewing way back, was disappointed that the mysteries weren’t resolved satisfactorily. I suppose my expectation was for more cut and dry answers. It wasn’t upon reviewing that I realized that the vast majority of the mysteries were indeed explained, just not in a matter of fact/in your face kind of way. I also have to say that the content on this channel has really helped me gain a greater understanding of this 👍 Also, I (and many others) had a hard time getting over the fact that we were duped into thinking the flash-sideways was a flash forward, and that what was going on was really the survivors’ future life off the Island. Sure, things started getting weird when Desmond went around “waking” the other survivors up, but surely the Island messed with their memory when the left, and they could now get on with their lives with the full memories of the past and their relationships, right? It took me a while, and a reviewing to get over that feeling and accept the ending for what it was, and to realize that it couldn’t have ended any other way.
@cirjaonisim1113 Жыл бұрын
I think the reason for which a lot of people don't like the show especially those that have no sorts of faith (like you said in one video) is because LOST is like the Bible. It doesn't gives you answers straight up on a plate but rather asks of you the difficult questions, questions in the light of which you see your own insecurities, uncertainties, your sins, your shortcomings and your flaws. And that is really uncomfortable to anyone. But what I find extraordinary and is what you have proven with this channel already, is that just like the Bible which explains itself to anyone who wants to find answers for himself is that LOST also explains itself to anyone who is curios and is willing to invest time to search and find answers for himself. Great video, great channel!

@@Choekaas Oh man, that truly sucks! :-( Sorry to hear that it's lost in the ether of KZbin. I've had this happen to me before. I remember, on at least several occasions, when I replied to a comment with a really involved message, posted it, and then for some reason it never showed up when I checked back. Not sure why that was, I suspected it could be related to my VPN somehow and KZbin mistaking me for spam. In your case, it could be because of the links. I can't remember if any of my erased comments had links in them... Either way, it's so frustrating to put effort into a comment then to lose it all in one click. It has got me into the habit of pressing ctrl+c on whatever I write just in case it happens again. I've been burned so many times before that I copy+paste all my responses before clicking post. Even with this message lol. Anyway, sorry your message got lost (no pun intended). If you can remember any pieces of it, feel free to share again.

Great show that I’ve watched a few times through. Ending is a bit unsatisfying though. They don’t answer enough questions. Why is the island “magical”. Why does someone have to take care of the island? How did the black smoke become? How did the original people get there and Jacobs mom? Great show but would love more answers.

Once again, a great video. Thanks! ☺ I hope for new videos of the LOST FAQ series Can you answer the question about the show? Why can Miles Strom talk to a dead boy in the 4x02 flashback if a) Miles doesn't have a boy's body b) Miles can only read the memories of the dead, not talk In fact, this flashback contradicts the following episodes. Also, the boy also informed Miles about money and drugs behind the closet in the room. What do you think about it? And what kind of device Miles used in the room? Why didn't he use it in the 5x13 flashback? P.S. Sorry if there are mistakes in English, I am not an English speaker
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
Well, we know Miles can hear the dead without needing their remains present, as evidenced by the scene in 'Confirmed Dead' and later a flashback to his time as a little boy in 'Some Like it Hoth'. It's more related to him being in the environment and space that the dead are occupying. He's a radio tower receiving their signal. And we observe that he picks up the of the dead much better when their bodies or remains are present. Now, we also know that proximity to electromagnetic energy amplifies the voices of the dead, as shown on The Island and with the whispers. The machine that Miles is using in 'Confirmed Dead' appears to generate some kind of charge in the room. We can assume that charge is electromagnetic in nature. So, it is most likely a device that helps to boost the signal of his gift in absence of a body, which allows him to get more out of his communion. He isn't really talking with the dead boy, he is talking *at* the dead boy. Searching for the right prompt that will reveal the secret he is after. Miles could become like Hurley if he had honed his gift in a more open and honest way, but because he uses it cynically and doesn't tap into his full potential, he remains a borderline psychic and, therefore, limited in his abilities.

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Thank you for the answering! I found out about Lost because of the show "Once upon a Time", in which there were many references to Lost. Before I first watched "Lost" in 2019, I didn't know anything about the plot of this show. I didn't read the reviews and didn't know what people thought about the ending. I watched it in one month and the half, I really loved the ending, and I was shocked that a lot of people think the ending sucks. For some reason, people thought that the explanation of mythology was the only important thing in the series, as if it alone determined the ending, ignoring the development of characters, especially Jack, Ben, or awesome written antagonist as Man in Black and his epic confrontation with Losties. Many people called the change of genre from robinsonade to fantasy a terrible thing, although logically this is exactly what was supposed to happen. Jack turned from a man of science into a man of faith, and the show went the same way, showing that John Locke was always right. As for the "unsolved mysteries", the most important of them were actually revealed in the show. The rest of the mythology had to be solved by the fans. There's nothing weird about that.The same thing happened, for example, with Gravity Falls. Lost is my favorite show, I prefer it rather than Breaking Bad. I've rewatched Lost with family members several times and will rewatch with my girlfriend soon. In the main Lost community in my country, people compete for how many times they rewatched Lost :) How many times have you done this?

@@LOSTEXPLAINED108 Do you know Choekaas? This guy makes Lost Episodes Guide and other videos about the show. I saw him in the comments to your video about the Egyptians. Have you thought about collaboration with him?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
I don't know if I could recall the exact number of times that I've seen the show. By this point in time, I'd estimate maybe a dozen or so, with my most recent re-watch having been through 2020-2021. Yes, I have interacted with Choekaas. We don't know each other personally but we have spoken on several occasions on this channel and on Reddit. I've been asked before about doing a collaboration with another LOST KZbinr, and I always wonder: "what would that collaboration look like?" I wouldn't really know how to do a collaboration with Choekaas since our respective content is quite different: he maps out character journeys and I explore specific mysteries. We have our own channel plans mapped out, so to speak. That's not to rule out doing something in the future though, but I tend to enjoy working and making my videos on my own.

Not sure if this is the best place to ask, but do you have any thoughts on why Ben was legitimatly snubbed so hard by Jacob? It seems like a point by the end that Jacob didn't care for Ben at all and it ended up being the reason he died.

I finished this show today. The beginning so so great, and I actually liked the ending. Sadly the show feel off a lot after like season 1 and 2. Everything beyond that is pretty much your average 08/15 show. Still... It's a great experience! I actually expected it to be more "mindfuck" tho. However I guess the cliffhangers and mysterious parts work way better if you got to wait a week between every episode

Back when I was ten years old back in 2010 I didn’t like the last 2 seasons but I remember loving the ending and have never understood why people couldn’t wrap their heads around it. (SPOILER) Even without knowing all the answers it’s still pretty clear what happens. Hurley becomes the new protector, everyone else escapes, Jack dies and they all meet in purgatory. I’m about to do my first full rewatch in years.

@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I plan to re-record and remake The Theory of Everything over the next few months, but I will break it down into six parts rather than another five hour video. So, part one will focus on the origins of the island; part two will discuss its ancient history; part three will explore the game between Jacob and MiB and the candidates; part four will address the science and time travel elements; part five will explore faith and the supernatural, such as the whispers and the sideways; and I'll include a final part that discusses the meaning and themes of the show overall. That's the current plan. Hope to have all parts done and uploaded this year. Fingers crossed!

I absolutely recommend the show. Initially was disappointed by the ending. But a couple of years ago I've rewatched it and it's adorable. I think I'll watch it again after finishing these videos. As a comparison - the end of Game of thrones is so frustrating and bad written, LOST treated it's villain much better. The writers didn't have a plan, but somehow this show was a complete and a satisfying story. Love the video ❣

Ok say that lost had some plot holes, inconsistencies, mysteries that haven't been solved or had bad explanations. You can't say that lost did not have the best characters of all of TV history when compared to other series up till now. It had memorable characters, dialogues and quotes that even 10 years after watching the finale, I remember them and I go back to watching it again.

Thinking of sending this to my stepfather as part of a campaign to get him to watch it, but can't help thinking those credits are a bit spoilery. Do new viewers need to know that the Island has protectors or that there is someone called Jacob who has candidates?
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
You know, I was so busy focusing on not spoiling too much in the actual video that I didn't think about the Patreon credits! Yes, they could be seen as slightly spoilery, I suppose. But without the context I'm not so sure if newbies would read too much into Patreon tier names, nor understand that what they represent or are referencing. The important thing is getting fresh eyes to give the show a go. By the time they get to the latter half of the show, I don't imagine they will be thinking nor remembering the details of my Patreon lol.

Lol, have you really done that? I would imagine watching my explanations without having seen the show itself would make the videos seem like mad rantings! I always encourage everyone to watch the show for themselves, regardless of what they know (or think they know) about it in advance. If you're not joking about this then perhaps the upside is that you'll have a unique context and understanding of things going into it. Could be an interesting experiment! Although I always recommend that new viewers watch the show first and then my explanation videos afterwards. Because LOST is best when seen without too many advance spoilers, and without someone else's interpretations already in your head.

Can you make an in-episode order TLDW of the story? I want to understand the show but I can't stand how much time JJ Abrams wastes on mystery boxes that don't lead anywhere,
@LOSTEXPLAINED1082 жыл бұрын
That's a tricky one. First of all, JJ Abrams wasn’t involved with the writing of the show past the pilot. He only came back to direct one episode in season three. Otherwise, he was hands off the series. Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse ran the show. While it launches from a place of JJ's "mystery box" storytelling style, it is very much its own animal and tells its own mythology that comes with plenty of answers, ambiguities, ideas and general brain fuel. I'd say if you're curious enough about the mythology (and explainer channels like this) then it's worth buying the ticket and taking the full ride. There's lots of summaries of the story out there, it just won't be very dramatic or compelling to digest the narrative in that way. What makes LOST so great is the journey itself to the end, particularly the characters and their emotional arcs. You won't get that from TLDW breakdown. I don't plan to make one of those, but I do plan to launch an Episode Guide later this year that will go through each episode one-by-one. Newcomers could watch along with those each month if they so desire.
