I also loved how the Leftovers explored the themes of order and chaos. I came away feeling that it taught me how both are different sides of the same coin. One can't exist without the other, but one also negates the other. It's a paradox. A battle. A dance. And it's something we all must cycle through continuously in our own lives. The sooner we learn to accept and embrace both rather than trying to hold on to or push away either, the sooner we learn to live our lives with grace.

Season two is the characters trying their best to feel better, and not accomplishing it, but at least there is some bright light for moments. Consequently, I don't think The Leftovers got a "fair" watch from me. I DID watch it--all the way through (and quite quickly at that--and I was never bored or uninterested, but....I felt like the "connection" I experienced with LOST--personal "connection" to the story, the intrigue and, of course, the characters--just wasn't there for me. But, again, I think I came to The Leftovers with the wrong approach, and that's partially why. I suspect the show's actually BETTER than my experience, but what I brought to it muddied it. I want to give it another go, with this understanding, but... I'm simply not ready to take that particular journey again. To me it seems as if they were all existing in a simulated universe, very similar to a combination of the Sims and Second Life. Their world is a diverse mixture of characters, some autonomous, some NPCs programs, and possibly participants from 'our reality' immersed in the simulation. You had cowboys hanging out with Buddhist monks, nuns mingling with pagan revelers, cops milling about the town dealing with circus clowns, party people and a variety of animals. Strange, random events occurring, changes in the environment and landscape. People who were supposedly dead or killed, RESPAWNING multiple times, some of which had different personalities and memories. A glitch in the matrix or a moderator/programmer altering the parameters of the simulation at will perhaps? Think about the scene in the after life purgatory hotel, where Kevin had to CHOOSE a set of clothing in a closet that would determine what his role would be in THAT simulation, that is straight out of the gaming world, like GTA.

The main reason that the show raises a lot of questions it's due to its deconstructive nature. This show de-naturalizes ideas just to play with the audience's expectations, starting from the search for meaning behind everything in the show. The common systems of belief are purposely subverted and the existential crisis is also unusual in its nature, raising questions in the opposite way that it usually does: The Leftovers doesn't explore the meaningless of life but rather life as a punishment as the departed are more priviledged than those who remained to grief. Also, the propensity to surrealism is also amazing, exploring an ambiguous limit between reality and dream and generally between plains of existence, external and internal, real or magical/mythical.

Great video but you should REALLY take the "no spoilers" out of this title. There are SO many spoilers in here. If I'd watched this before the show I would have been extremely mad. In a show like The Leftovers where the core content is the exploration of ideas and analysis of ambiguous information, talking about the character arcs are literally the main content of the show. Talking about how "we can't know the answers but the true meaning is how we and the characters come to terms with that" is literally the epic conclusion the entire show builds towards. Telling someone that before hand totally undermines all the red herrings and misdirection the show meticulously builds up over three seasons. Knowing that from the start effects how the entire journey is perceived.

Yeah, I wouldve been upset if I saw this. After the first season I was furious the show gave me no answers and wanted to quit, but I kept watching and finally understood everything the show was trying to tell me from the beginning. Going through that journey is an essential part of the viewing experience. I wouldn't tell anyone what the show is about besides giving the vague "people struggling with their lives after 2% of the world mysteriously vanish." That's all you need to know going in and to not have anything taken away from a first view.

Most of the way through season 1 and I think it's a really interesting show, but it's honestly kind of wild to me that this channel dedicates so much time to copaganda, but this video doesn't seem especially interested in how power and authority are deployed by this white police chief, at points drunkenly against what are literal terrified brown people (see: the dry cleaner). I don't really care whether shows do positive or negative things with their protagonists, but I don't think the camera senses what's important about some of these abuses, because the show is so caught up in understanding individual experiences of grief rather than institutional uses of power. What we end up getting as a result is a fascinating character study that doesn't really care at all about a subset of the behaviors its characters exhibit, except insofar as they lend them complexity or moral ambiguity. It's honestly kind of jarring and by far the worst part of the show thus far. Like I said, I'm inclined to agree with your assessment on the whole -- at least most of the way through season 1 -- but this *feels* like a show that began airing in 2014; its understanding and representation of law enforcement feels bad in ways that are unintentional, due to a lack of attention, and as far as I can tell do not substantially inform its characterization (i.e., I've read far enough ahead to know there's no grand reckoning between the black female mayor and the police chief over his use of state power). I can I only hope that this isn't a season of television that would be written today, or even back in 2018, with the same level of obliviousness. Genuinely a bit disappointed in the level of analysis you brought to this video, as compared to your other studies of cops in popular media.

@bromarvids51862 жыл бұрын
I think it was a great show. However as naturally dissatisfied as I am regarding the ending, it's not necessarily because they didn't answer questions. Lost was built on too many characters that it seemed the writers were stuck between a rock and a hard place when they knew they finally had to answer questions regarding the island, and furthermore every single character (almost). This is probably why it was met with mixed reviews. Leftovers was similarly a fantastic story, based on a forever interesting concept of religion and 'what happens when we die'. I don't feel many stories have dealt with it as well as this series. Now I do feel lost was a learning curve that trying to answer all these questions can be less interesting than leaving the audience think for themselves. But the final episode seemed to answer more the loving relationship of the main character over the actual core of the entire storyline. It's as though they forgot that this was not a love story between these 2 characters, rather a story about characters and their way of adapting after a strange anomaly. Much so that I didn't really care about their romance, as the constant drive has not been in that direction, it involved many characters. Many episodes are slightly dated in it's slow paced way, but the final episode was a great one off love story, that would be best fitted as a budget student film. As the episode pressed, I felt worried that it wasn't going to deliver. So much that I kept googling convinced there must be another episode, or series remaining. It didn't deliver. The parallel world, another dimension answer was great. However it rendered much of the religious jargon obsolete. Left me thinking that forcing religion down the audience's throat to then conclude it wasn't really anything to do with religion at all, is ultimately rather lame. Yes they didn't actually conclude it wasn't religion based but let's be honest, it wasn't was it. It was potentially the hand of God the same it was when marley died in Marley and me. Again I must reiterate, the extent of how forced the final episode was in giving the audience an end to a romantic drama. What does that mean when you look back on Kevin and his James bond style afterlife experiences. Was that a dream? I mean no, he died for hours, several times and always came back. But the significance of this dwindles when you realise religion wasn't a part of it. Patty became nothing more than a driving force for more destruction. The guilty remnant's mysterious ways became nothing more than a cult, a group who knew nothing more than the rest of us. All these long drawn out dramatic scenes were fabulous to watch, but lose credibility in the shows conclusion.

I loved Lost, however ending was hard but i still love it. Here I'm in the middle of season 2 and I'm like... meeeh. I mean, I'm watching it but I don't feel any fulfillment. There're some myster, question that few episode laters are explained - kind off, however many are left without when Lost gave most of answers.... I'll end this show, however.... I don't agree that this show is masterpiece.

I just watched the series 3 finale... twice. What a show. Something that truly gets better series after series.

May I ask. Do you finally get any answers in the final???
@jameswebber3592 жыл бұрын
@@spicnspan981 Yes... And no. I got different viewpoints on my two watches of the last episode. I suppose if you're asking: Did they give a DEFINITIVE answer? Then, no, they do not. But this show was never about those who disappeared, it was about those who remained, hence the title: The Leftovers

The thing I wanted to know most was how the Guilty Remnant was getting insane amounts of money. They never once explored that, ever. They just rolled around buying churches and having a video game infinite money glitch to go eat out whenever they wanted and shit lol
