“Former heroes giving birth to spoilt rotten kids” is inadvertently a jab at the kids of many of the leaders who fought for liberation in South Africa but he’s saying that by virtue of being children of such great leaders they are born into a cycle of responsibility and expectation but many of them fail to meet any of these expectations and use their surnames as a ticket to living a life that they haven’t worked for. Thus being said, they also use their surnames as an excuse to absolve themselves from the problems of modern society and live on preempted pedestals that they played no part in creating.

Mandela has a book written "A Long Walk To Freedom" - that could be a reference to that long walk which he meant that we've (South Africans) got a long way to seeing that freedom
@comfortmthombothi605 жыл бұрын
@@bensonnyakabwa1868 In retrospect it's applicable but I doubt that was the intention of the title. For me it aptly captures the long walk he (we) had to travel for political freedom which also ties in nicely with the narrative of his 27 years incarceration. But like I said, in retrospect, it's even more apt for the ordinary black South African and the continent at large.

"I'm from that continent of long walk accomplishments" This refers to Nelson Mandela's book "Long Walk To Freedom" then he ties it in with the "Former Heroes" bar basically saying that the kids of our struggle heroes are spoilt because these former heroes made a profit from democracy. Also, these "heroes" are corrupt and feel they are above the law, and often get their kids out of sticky situations as was the case with President Zuma with his son
@phakamanimavela31415 жыл бұрын
Mr Jay Esquire I think he was referring to all African liberation heroes and their associates. Where liberators turn into the government, line their pockets and enrich their families. The by product being those leaders kids being rich spoilt brats. It’s a deep bar. One could write a whole book around these bars

When Rappers appeared on Sway And they spit real bars, they are satified "Hyenas" and Sway hosted alot of Rappers.. So he basically destroyed them Lyrically;Hence, elephant grave as its a big ass grave😅😅... That's how I understood it to say the least.

Speaking of Honey & Pain, he is also referencing his album Honey & Pain (on Spotify) - I highly recommend this album, all the songs are fire but from musicality stance I rate: Honey & Pain ft. Mike Classic (from the album) Rapture ft. Jay Claude (from the album) Side Chick ft. Ayanda Jiya & Rouge (from the album) Zakwe - Roots ft. Stogie T & Jay Claude (by a different artist but I had to throw this in the list) - My top pick here Then from a storytelling stance: Purgatory (from the album) Numbers Game ft. YoungstaCPT (from the album) Johazadousburg (from the album) God's Eye (from the album) - My top pick here, cause of the depth Also Stogie T has 2 albums as Stogie T, before he changed his name to Stogie T - his was commonly known as Tumi or better known with his former band Tumi & The Volume. I thank you :)

Also, I was just going of the Honey & Pain reference, hence I mainly referenced the album, mans has amazing work as a emcee and a poet.

The “elephant graves” line is in reference to how Mufasa only allowed the hyenas in the elephant grave yard in The Lion King

just so we are clear the dude is legendary and went by Tumi , and his band Tumi and The Volume, he really dumbed it down when he changed his name to Stogie T for the new audience, but if you wanna hear him on some Black Thought penmanship find his materials as Tumi and The Volume.

Love y’all both!! But Damn y’all reallyfucked up on the “Reading Langston Hughes, el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz and them, shit // In the pocket like the Audubon assassin” 😂 el-Hajj Malik el-Shabazz is better known as Malcolm X. So when he follows with “in the pocket like the Audobon assassin” - he’s referring to Malcolm X being killed in the Audobon Ballroom -- if y’all remember one of the Audobon assassins yelled “get y’all hand outta my pocket” And the double entendre meaning “...in the pocket” referring to being on-beat aswell!! Y’all messed up on that one!!! And that was one of the craziest lines in the whole thing!! I was certain y’all were going to go crazy for haha! But beautiful work as always bros!

“I put your certified hyenas in elephant graves”: That’s actually a reference to Lion King. The hyenas (Scar’s cronies) would hang in the elephant graveyard. That’s the forbidden place Simba and Nala ventured until Mufasa saved them from trouble.
