Derek N ehh somewhat not really. People dislike this song because it has a music video, which at the time of you made a music video to a song, it was considered selling out and being “poppish”. The song itself is far from a pop song and the album it’s on AJFA is I think their fastest thrash album. It’s mainly the music video and it really blowing them up that gets hate. Doesn’t take away from the actual song

Historically And Justice was a really dark album, one that they recorded over the loss of their Bassist Cliff Burton who had died while the band was touring a year and a half earlier. One is based on Johnny got his gun by Dalton Trumbo who both wrote the book in 1939 but also directed the film in 1971. Joe is the soldier, who was a son and was engaged to be married and the very last day of World War One is the victim of a mortar shell blast that blinds him, causes him deafness, removes his jaw and nose, and severely injures his arms and legs which have to be amputated. Unaware that Joe is conscious and can still think and feel, he is believed to be an unthinking, unfeeling vegetable. Recognizing that he wishes to be dead due to the extent of his injuries once he becomes conscious and is able to piece together exactly what has happened to him he desperately begins to try to find a way to communicate to the Nurses and Doctors. As a last-ditch effort, he decides to use morse code, using his head to tap out the messages. S.O.S. Help, Kill me. Which at first is misinterpreted as part of his condition slipping until they begin to notice its consistency. The story ends with Joe finally getting his wishes across to one of his nurses who tries to end his suffering but is stopped by a Military superior and ends ambiguously with whether he remains in his state or whether they finally end his misery.

Kill Em' All is the record that pioneered the Thrash Metal genre. There were elements of Thrash before Metallica from bands like Sabbath, Queen, Motorhead and Venom, but Metallica is the band that wrapped it all up into 1 package. This song is about the 1939 Dalton Trumbo novel Johnny Got his Gun. The clips in the video are from the 1971 movie version. The black and white scenes are his present condition after stepping on the land mine, the scenes in color are him flashing back to his life before the accident. Both the novel and the movie have been banned and very difficult to get at various points in history due to the powerful anti-war message. Metallica bought the rights to the movie to use in this video. The original author Trumbo was one of the people blacklisted during the McCarthy communism witchhunts.

The "video" you saw was actually clips from a movie called "Johnny Got His Gun" about a guy who was so injured he lost all his ability to communicate and move. For those that want to know. This song is based on the story line of a movie called Johnny Got His Gun. It's about WW1.. The movie is.. well. This video.. Only with more detail. Will make you hate war. In the movie, his face, arms, and legs are gone. Blind and deaf. Removed after a shell blast. They think he is brain dead, he's not. In the movie and as you see in the song you hear his thoughts. He can't tell what's real at first.. Goes through this journey and slips into madness. The part that stuck with me was that he could feel the sunlight when it shines through his window. It was just about the only joy he knew.

No worries. It was set in world war 1. The book was written in 1938 the movie was made in 1971. Side note: "While it is well known that Jimmy Carter required all his new State cabinet members to view the film shortly after his election as Georgia governor in 1971, the film became far better known when it was incorporated in the video of Metallica's song "One", whose popularity subsequently turned Johnny Got His Gun into a cult film. Eventually, the members of Metallica bought the rights to the film in order to keep showing the music video without having to pay additional royalty fees."

Anyone that says that this is a bad song is just full of shit. As far as the song and video go, a little info for you guys. The song is based on the movie "Johnny Got His Gun." They even used the clips for the music video. In fact, they loved the movie so much they bought the rights to it and if you buy the movie on DVD it comes with this music video as a bonus feature. The movie isn't the easiest watch in the world because of how grim it is, but I suggest giving it a watch because it just makes the song that much more powerful and meaningful. It's a powerful anti-war song and just really damned good. Anyway, great reaction guys! Speaking of good anti-war Metallica songs, I'd also like to suggest Disposable Heroes from the Master of Puppets album. Seeing as you guys loved that song, maybe another song from that album would be cool too. And on a final note, Happy Holidays guys and have a happy New Year as well.

Not based on..but scenes from the move where used... The black and white parts are original.."One" is an anti-war song that portrays a World War I soldier who is severely wounded-Arms and legs blown off from an artillery shell, blind and unable to speak or move-begging God to take his life as he feels constant pain. His only hope is to devise a way to communicate with the hospital staff. In the music video, he jolts in the hospital bed, spelling "Kill me" in Morse code.

@@DonnaCPunk He really is such a good and cool guy. He might not be the best player from a technical view but he helped write and play some of the best songs ever. So he's up there as one of my favourites

I don't know why they aren't getting back to Pantera. Cemetery Gates is my choice too.

Also, yeah. Not a Pantera fan, but I'm seeing a lot of push for Cemetery Gates by Pantera, and that's the one song of there's that I like a lot. So I'm gonna have to throw a vote in for that.

Bryant Smith, brilliant song. I'd push Hollow more personally.

If you even understand a little bit about music you'll be able to see the incredible power and emotion within this classic. I retired from the military a couple years ago after 25 years of service. I understand the torture and finality of war first hand as I have known many buddies that have been devastated one way or another. I cannot listen to this song or watch this video without it having a profound affect on me for the rest of the day. I tend to avoid experiencing "ONE" these days because it emotionally drains me but I had to see your take on it. Thanks boys, another awesome job!

This is a classic. Growing up in the hood, the 1st time I heard this I was hooked. I never saw the vid but I heard the song. It's also sad, but bangin, a man coming from war, so messed up he's praying for death. Metalica did that shit. Sad but beautiful song.

Metallic nailed it with turning the feelings of conflict, sadness, confusion, fear etc of a person in pain returning from war into music

Me too Kat. I saw them spring '94 in Atlanta. Had a 2 minutes of bombs intro to this song, which was quite awesome! Also it was my first time in a mosh pit. :)

This is classic Metallica in my mind...i don’t know how people say this isn’t good. Metal or not, this is a great song and you guys nailed it in my mind. Great review from both of you! Hope to see Scar Symmetry in the lineup someday! Have a good holiday fellas
@excuse.me.sir.6 жыл бұрын
i wish they would of listened to just the song itself with out the movie overtones, or the video with out the movie in the background. all that talking and war sounds kind of takes away from the song in my opinion. for a first time listen i mean. they should listen to it just the song first.

Old Scar Symmetry though with Christian Alvestam. Pitch Black Progress or the one with ghost prototype 1 and 2
@mcjibbs6 жыл бұрын
Definitely this. We can throw them for a total loop and have them listen to Ghost Prototype II: Deus Ex Machina. That intro would make them very confused.

I've been petitioning for Ghost Prototype I for awhile now haha. I'm hoping it's only a matter of time til we hear this reaction!

justice is probably their best album but if you grew up with much trashier metal like kill em and ride thelighting and are used to extremely aggressive metal compared to this more /heavy progressive album and without no bassist...there ya go
@samuelsantos-bu3xy5 жыл бұрын
Grigori Rasputin1990 that’s still not a reason to say this song/album is trash though. it’s understood this album was different to people, but it’s not bad.
@dr.juerdotitsgo51194 жыл бұрын
Bullshit. No thrash metal fan EVER thought this was shit. They, Lost In Vegas, were probably confused with the fact that some hardocre fans back in the day thought Metallica sold out because they made a video for MTV
