Wow. I’ve been on ice like that twice before in my life but both times thicker by a couple of inches. And never perched on a shipwreck nor undulating like that. Stunning footage but here comes the old man admonishment-if you’re going to take that level of risk you need boot cleats instead of snowshoes, ice picks around your neck and an inflatable vest on. We want to be able to see your adventures for years to come, eh?
@LostLakes4 жыл бұрын
Thanks James! I think you saw my reply on FB but the snowshoes were to spread my weight and for a little extra clearance over the watery ice, my picks were tucked into my sweater, and I think I had the PFD on the whole time 🙂 Always welcome your old man admonishment though...someone's gotta keep me in line 😜

Had ice like that on Priest Lake in North Idaho about 1985 or 1986. The lake is 19 miles long and from a mile to 4 miles wide. The entire surface was like a pane of glass end to end. It was about 8 inches thick so it was a lot safer than your situation. We used crampons to get around and the Lake Trout fishing was excellent! It hasn't been like that in 35 or 36 years since. A rare event indeed.

Wow, thank you for that last bit of footage! The whole time you were on the ice I kept thinking " Man, I wish I could be there on a pair of skates!" I was also singing Joni Mitchell's "River" :) Just so you know, tin foil as well as aluminium pots can leach a bit of aluminium when you cook in them. However, if the pots are anodised (which is usually the case), they are said to be safe. That is, if the pot is damaged or if you cook acidic foods (tomato, lemon, berries, and the worst of all, rhubarb - source:pubmed) it will leach.
@LostLakes2 жыл бұрын
Hahah I've been dying for it to freeze smooth again ever since...this was such an amazing experience. Thanks for this Katanya! Lately I've been trying to cook in my steel pot and just use aluminum for boiling water to avoid/minimize that risk. Also, rhubarb...who knew!

@LostLakes4 жыл бұрын
Good stuff PCS, thanks for saying that. I admit it's weird to call the thing I'm killing "my friend"...it's just how the gratitude comes out for some reason. Being grateful and compassionate for fish and game ought to be the first thing taught to anglers and hunters. Much of the time, it's all about the guns and the trophies
@randyrobertson61164 жыл бұрын
That's actually an effective technique for dispatching the fish and putting him out of the misery of not being able to breathe. When I fish and I'm just doing some catch and release, I try not to keep them out of the water for more than 1 minute. I'm not sure when it starts to get very uncomfortable for a fish being out of its water, but I would think a minute is a decent guess. Anyway this was a great video. Seeing that ship in 40 feet of water is a testament to the cleanliness and clarity of lake superior. I've heard of 80 foot plus underwater views in superior. God , I would love to get up there one day.
