In Fellowship of the Ring, Viggo Mortensen, who played Aragorn, found the portrayal of Uruk-hais so realistic that it unnerved him. Richard Taylor's impassioned speech to the stuntmen playing the Uruk-hais about merciless killing added to the intensity, making Mortensen and others hilariously uneasy during filming.

It was still prop knife with everything blunted not sharp one. Still would have hurt definetly if he would have hit Viggo especially if it would have went straight to his face. The actor actually did it by mistake it was the knife he was meant to throw, but because he couldnt see very well because of the prosthetics he accidently threw it at Viggo when he was meant to throw it way past him, and they likely would have just used camera angles, and such to make it look like its aimed straight at him

Nah, he was the reason they needed this speech, he was on set swinging hard from the start. He was just built like that and told THEM "come at me for real". You clearly never actually seen the Hobbit trilogy... The special effects are way better than LOTR trilogy- as it was a decade or so after with better CGI! No one says it doesn't look spectacular and like the real thing! In the theatre it was insane you felt like you were sucked into middle earth... so regardless of whether you like the original story or not doesn't change that both movies succeeded in drawing the audience into the world and rooting for the heroes against the fuglies!!!!!!!

from what I've heard, the extras that played the Uruks got into character very easily. In Two Towers, that scene of them all lined up, banging their weapons and chests, just shouting out animal noises of violence and death before the initial assault, was unscripted activity from the extras. They just started doing it, and the actors seeing it were genuinely unnerved by the performance, so the "shaken defenders" shots of them reacting to it were somewhat genuine xD

"Move forward with the intention you are going to kill." This is what so many fight scenes these days lack, intent (or at least the appearance of). It's painfully obvious that a stunt man isn't trying to hit the actor while also allowing themselves to be hit. It makes both the hero and the villains look silly and incompetent, and the villains never come across as a real threat taking away any sense of tension.

The scene at the end of Part 1, where Aragorn cuts off an Uruk sergeant's arm and stabs him with his sword - and the Uruk just proceeds to pull himself onto the sword with a grimace saying "this is nothing to me, bitch, fuck you", is in my top 3 favorite movie villain scenes of all time. All these years I always thought there is something special about the orcs/Uruks in the classic lotr films, about how fucking mean they look, unlike any other "villain army" in any other movie. One almost killed Viggo Mortensen for real, shooting a real arrow straight at him. When you see Viggo deflect that arrow with his sword, know that it was a real threat to his life.

it's crazy how cinema used to be taken seriously, you'd hear directors talk how cinema is always serious methodical work. now seriousness is such a taboo, god forbid anyone does their job for any other reason than being childishly passionate about it

I love the individual look of each orc. Not soulless clones, but individual characters. An absolutly fantastic job done by the make up team. And I love how they spit while talking. That makes them really come alive. So intimidating. And to know these are NZ soldiers and Maori and both. And the stunt coordinator points at you and tells them: "Kill him." Viggo: "Jesus, I'm shitting my pants." Ian: "Rrruuunnn!!!" 😂😂😂 Hell, yeah!

Doesn’t say much, that is true for literally every movie in existence other than lotr. the hobbit movies weren’t bad, but it was a film adaptation of a short children’s novel. No matter how they did that it would never compare to lotr.
@TheOnlyJohnAbraham
@TheOnlyJohnAbraham 3 ай бұрын
@@JFlatby Except that they took a book shorter than any of the LOTR books and stretched it out across 3 really long movies. The story has great potential for good adaptation, they just did it wrong.

@@TheOnlyJohnAbraham I agree that making 3 movies out of that short book was a bad idea (and probably purely motivated by making more money). However, even if that was corrected I don't see a world where the improved Hobbit movie would be as good as LotR. The story is still more of a children's book. (I do like it though! I just don't think it could ever compare to lotr, which was the original comment. "the difference is that the hobbit movies werent that good")

its an interesting thing about humans men, like the stanley milgram experiment in the 60's, you give a person a uniform, a costume, a mask and a purpose for that, they truely become that thing and forget who they were before. its completely transformative, those people really became Uruk-Hai for a few moments getting riled up lmao.

@@Tawadebno, it really doesn't. I love the hobbit, but the movies are unbearable. It should've never been a trilogy, they should've shot it like a normal film instead of that stupid high framerate shit that only make a minuscule difference if you see it in a theater, and should've used actual actors and sets and such like they did with LOTR. As they are, the hobbit movies are just a bloated bastardization of a fantastic story. The old animated version did better at bringing the hobbit to the screen.
