@@gourmetghost Thanks for the response. Interesting how the movie about the unknown, fictional musician played by an actor (Oscar Isaac) a lot are unfamiliar with turns out be a much better film than that of the legendary Bob Dylan played by the star (Timothee Chalamat) everyone knows. Guess the Cohn Brothers direction makes a big difference, along with the script, storyline, etc.

@@Elephant2024 definitely agree with you. I also just rewatched the Todd Haynes film I'm Not There and I think even that was far better than the brand new biopic. Instead of just showing us that time, the Haynes film gives you more of a feeling of what it was like to be around Dylan personally. and I think having different actors portray him at different times of his life is a bold and unique take, it pays off well in my opinion

Merry Christmas! The scene you spoke about with Dylan and Baez I saw somewhere and it's pretty great. I will definitely go see it. I met him in 1975 (he's related to one of my best friends) and my fave album of his is the lesser known "Desire", but he was nice to me, and I appreciated that, being a complete unknown myself.

Were you very young when you crossed paths with him? I love a fair few albums, but I don't think I'll ever love one from him more than Blood On The Tracks. It's just gorgeous, and borderline perfect. There's some acidity and bite, but there's an immense, warm lyricism, too. Soulful, sweetly/humbly introspective at times.

"I live for the dirt!" Best quote of the day! You're never gonna get it with this type of Hollywood gloss. That's a spot-on reference to "Amadeus." But without the insight provided by what I perceive are essentially "needle drops" of his greatest hits sprinkled throughout, the film provides no clue as to who Bob Dylan is. The biopic as a subgenre is - more often than not - singularly uninteresting.

It's tough to better 'I'm not There' or 'Don't Look Back', but I'll definitely give this one a look when it opens in the UK. Dylan really brought the Greenwich Village scene to life in 'Chronicles' and I'd loved to have been around at that time. I'm always a bit wary with biopics because the raw stuff gets sanitized, especially if the artist is still alive. Really liked your take, particularly the provisos and reservations.

I think they kept Bob Dylan mysterious on purpose because that's just who Bob Dylan is. They explain it within the movie a LOT. He doesn't want to be what anyone wants him to be. And that's what the movie portrays. He's interesting because he can't be cracked.
@markkavanagh7377

Agreed. Dylan in Pat Garrat and BtK does not have any presance on screen, he comes across as almost CGI, he's an empty shell that somehow writes universal songs. He's a mystery.
@sub-jec-tiv
@sub-jec-tiv 17 күн бұрын
@@markkavanagh7377Yeah it’s interesting to see how many people who knew him were like “pretty hard to believe that guy wrote all those amazing songs.” And not in a complimentary way. Dylan himself doesn’t pretend to be a genius, and when he has done interviews when asked about his early work he himself admits he has no idea how he wrote those songs. He’s a mystery even to himself, how can anybody else crack the shell and really portray him in any way than how he really is, which is a reflection on the waves, tangled up in blue.
@timtrek
@timtrek 16 күн бұрын
art is about getting out of the way so something more interesting can be born. most people's sense of self is too rigidly fixed to make anything unique or interesting, it was Dylan's not quite there-ness that gave him access to that universality ..he was a vessel for the spirit of the age

100% agree came here to say this - The elusiveness in the film is by design - the literal title is "a complete unknown". This isn't a documentary meant to uncover new previously unreleased knowledge - its a snapshot of his life (which I'm glad they chose to do a limited portion of time and not his entire career) and who he was THEN. Which we don't even know more about who he is now even. The film was excellently made and Timothy Chalamet's performance was incredible esp considering he learned all those songs for the film.

An articulate and insightful review as always. As a massive Dylan fan, it feels like I'm obligated to go see it, and I say that without any reluctance. I realize a biopic like this may have a limited ceiling, but it's an impossible task to distill the enigma of Dylan. Even a hint of his essence and some enjoyable cuts of music along the way will be worth the price of admission. Even before seeing this, I've gained a lot of respect for Chalamet and Mangold just from listening to Chalamet's perspectives in his Apple Music interview recently. That they eschewed the doomed aims of mimicry, knowing it to be unachievable with such an impenetrable character like Dylan, is a promising sign for all the Dylan snobs out there.

Merry Christmas, Maggie! The problem is that Dylan is still alive. You can't just fill in the blanks. The title of the movie says it all. How is a director of a biopic supposed to go deeper without moving into the territory of just going overboard with assumptions, wishful thinking, or, as you described, abstraction. Watch the Scorsese docs, and that's just heaven as a Dylan megafan and as deep as you're gonna get. I'm going to see this today and am sooo excited. I'm glad they only covered those years and that the performances are getting such great reviews. I am a fan of all the actors (I don't know the actress that plays Joan, but have only heard good things). That's the best I could ask from a Dylan biopic. I like that he's a "complete unknown."

Perhaps the mythos of Dylan can’t be cracked, and that’s what makes him as subject so difficult to tackle. Todd Haynes did a magnificent attempt of cracking this enigmatic nut in I’m Not There, but even in that film what we get is a riddle within the mythos, uncracked, via several Dylan personas. I haven’t seen this Mangold film yet, so can’t review your review. I can say, for me, sometimes a formulaic biopic is all I want from a director. It’s mostly about the music for me. I heard that Mangold et al went to extraordinarily lengths to replicate the same sound gear, including amps, studio stuff, mics that Dylan used at the time, which is no small detail. I enjoyed your thoughtful review. Can’t wait to see it.

Hope to see this soon here in the UK. Your review confirms my fears that a biopic on such a legendary, complex figure as Dylan cannot explore the deeper, nuanced aspects of his rise to fame, his impact on the culture and the people closely involved in that story. Still, I am looking forward very much to seeing Timothee Chalomet's performance - he looks perfectly cast to play Dylan - and enjoying the film as a weekend matinée, as you suggest.

I think the biggest issue here is a kind of scripted ‘teleology’ common to biopics.., Chalamet is talented but falls into that trap of knowing who his character is destined to become, so even as he arrives he *saunters* into New York from nowhere USA; self assured in a fashion that doesn’t ring true for any young artist who doesn’t yet know who they are or what they might become… meh, seen it all before…

The likely reason the filmmaker wouldn’t get his hands dirty is the limitation of doing a biopic of a living person.There must certainly be fear of facing a defamation lawsuit if anything the film depicted was not entirely accurate or offended Dylan himself. It’s much like an ‘authorized biography’ where any dirt has been sanitized.

As to the Newport performance, take it from me the sound that the audience heard would have been dreadful. Too loud. Too distorted. And, that is what would have bothered Pete. Remember, 1965, wasn't the first time an amplified band played at the folk festival. Muddy Water's band had previously played there with no controversy.

Devoid of substance , and depth the stuff that keeps the viewer coming back every few years and seeing multiple different messages, meanings, realizations as we grow older hopefully this inspires the next generation to get into music, and unique artistic expression everyone just goes along with trends now and that can be soul crushing to aspiring musicians / artists as it was to younger Millennials and Zoomers

Biopics always bite more than the movie can chew when it comes to careers as expansive as Dylan's. His can be measured in stages or eras so the filmmakers tend to ask themselves if they can do it one way or the other. "Walk the Line" and "A Complete Unknown" chose to take the latter route and look at a period of the artist's life. "A Complete Unknown", at its core, wants to try and find a balance between these important factors in Dylan's life at this time which is why you don't get more of what you would rather see in the film, a single dynamic instead of other ones playing out at the same time. Ultimately, though, the film is about the art and its traditions, what their values are, and what their limitations are as well. This was the paramount meaning behind Dylan going electric. Yes, it is a film that is fully aware that there are other films about or around Bob Dylan and the folk scene in the 1960s. There's a movie called "Control" directed by Anton Corbjin, about Ian Curtis and the band Joy Division who, despite existing for only a few years, still resonates. Their iconography is everywhere now but it is a band that existed for a short time and so it didn't have as many problems in telling a story about a person, a time, and the music of that time even though another exceptional film, Michael Winterbottom's "24 Hour Party People" also told a shorter version of it; that film was about an entire history of a music scene in Manchester. "Steve Jobs" and "Jobs" were biopics that exhibited another issue with the genre, the surviving estates and the families of the subject at hand. The former was made outside of the family and was derided by them as being false but Danny Boyle and screenwriter Aaron Sorkin did create a better film that got right into the contrasting layers of Jobs' legacy whereas the family would rather make a multimillion dollar tribute video to the departed. This means a sanitized version of that life. I don't think James Mangold did that though he did want to make an enjoyable film as well. Unlike Oliver Stone's "The Doors" which was too much like its subject, Jim Morrison, and his ethos concerning decadence and chaos that surviving band members lambasted Stone for character assassination. Yet Stone conveyed an essence of the music and the period that it represented that it mirrored a scene in the actual film where Morrison attended film school in California, where there was nothing but contention about his art. I think about what a biopic should do, and it should do what Corbjin and Stone and Boyle did in trying to capture the disposition and character of its subject and use it to build the story, visually and spiritually.

I really enjoyed this and there are only a small handful of music biopics that I like, Bohemian Rhapsody is probably my favorite by far. I got the sense that Bob Dylan did not participate in this movie and that's one of the reasons why the audience is left in the dark about the character portrayed, but also, Dylan is a very private person as well. I think the movie did a great job of showing Dylan's negative experiences with fame (getting mobbed when he just wanted to go listen to live music, for example) which likely had something to do with his aloofness from fans. I really appreciated the presence of Joan Baez as a character in the movie and both actors did a tremendous job. The one thing that felt a little odd to me was the large number of songs that are played throughout the movie - it felt disproportionately large when compared to other music biopics to the point where nearly 50% of the movie was music.

Your review is thoughful and intelligent but I believe that most people who have a connection in some way to Dylan will be very moved by this film. In fact, I know that not only I was, but everyone I have spoken with so far has been. I think critics are trained to be "tough" on a movie. I appreciate you acknowledged that you were being tough. You are a good film critic but it seems the job of a critic is to find fault. I was not constantly thinking about how he was portraying Dylan. I think a film critic does that. Only a poor performance would make the average viewer focus on that. For many non critics, this was an incredibly powerful film, not only to those who love Dylan but also those who have never realized the impact of his art until they see it in the context of the times through the eyes of those around him. Part of this film's greatness are the songs themselves and how they are presented. Of course the acting is superb. It was one of the best portrayals of a living person I have ever seen, and perhaps the best ever of a living musician. The whole cast was outstanding. You did not dispute any of that. I have no beef with you. Thanks for reading. As I am not a critic, this is not a criticism of your review, just a general criticism of critics in general.

It sounds a little different. It only covers four years, he doesn't have some great obstacle to overcome like addiction or past trauma that haunts him, no huge love story. It's just Bob Dylan being Bob Dylan during the most influential time in his life.

I wonder, as little as I know about Dylan, and what I read about his involvement in the film (he annotated the script and gave notes to the actor), if he wanted a more complex, dirty portrayal.

I'm torn on your review in the same way you had mixed feelings about the movie. My criticism of any criticisms on the film is . . . knowing Dylan, his discography, the Don't Look Back film, and Scorsese's documentary No Direction Home (same lyric line this film got their title from) - what possible film would capture Dylan's essence? You could add more dialogue and drama, at a huge risk of completely mythologizing Bob. The film medium is a visual medium. It's not as dependent on dialogue at theatre. And filmmakers like Andrei Tarkovsky have used film as a form of moving paintings. A Complete Unknown does a great job of recreating Greenwich Village in the 60s, creating the atmosphere of that fertile artistic environment. And there is no other person who could have personified Dylan better than Chalamet. More compelling dialogue with tension/resolution cliched film storytelling would have just been kitsch. And not true to Dylan in any sense. There is no conceivable better Dylan film in an alternate universe. As soon as you pitch how you would do it, it would already sound dumb. I wish I could permanently erase Joaquin Phoenix's portrayal of Johnny Cash from my mind.

I adored the simple nature of this film and that it wasn’t trying to “crack” Bob Dylan. That would’ve been completely insufferable in my opinion. And I actually loved the production design, it wasn’t the typical fetishization of the 60’s that we see in a lot of historical movies

It's less a biopic, more a cover concert film, and more than Walk the Line was. And if you know that going in, it's great. If you don't, you want a lot more I watched Don't Look Back the morning of, so I wanted more That said, I haven't seen a music setpiece that goes wrong the way the festival does, which was very interesting. (It helps that I'm an idiot and forgot Dylan was the one who caused controversy by going electric)

" she remains unpredictable "....you do realise thats an oxymoron right...?? And an incorrect statement too...always the same silly location, leaning on a bookcase on her knees instead of sitting on a chair, we have chairs these days....!! Theres even an unused sofa as a chair clue for her...!! And always the same contrived right hand position, trying to look thoughtful but really just holding her hair back....Unpredictable you say, I think not...!
