Just got back from Kauai a few weeks ago! Luckily the island isn't as loaded with hotels and commercial development, so there are a lot of restaurants, shops, etc you can go to and support the native people who live there. It is so so so beautiful and you're going to have a great time :)

Re: tourism & colonialism- When we go to Cuba we make a point to spend time off resorts and spending money in local restaurants, etc and people DO appreciate the tourist money so long as you don't just stay in the corporate side of things. As for the water issue in Hawaii, I feel like that's harder to reconcile :(

I grew up in Hawaii! Kauai is not too bad and I think you have a good plan for your visit. If your looking for a time/money donation opportunity a local youth center or boys and girls club would be a nice gesture. Public Education is historically terrible in Hawaii so a little donation towards the local kids (keiki) would be plenty pono🤙

I went on an island holiday a couple years before the pandemic (2017 I believe) and what we learned from the natives was that plastic n other non compostable waste pollution b/ of tourists was very damaging to them. transporting recycling to mainland is very expensive so corporations like resorts and hotels n restaurants would just dump them in the water which then contaminated their drinking water. we didn't know so after we were told we bought everything not in plastic packaging and whatever waste/plastic we had we washed it out n packed it in the suitcase and disposed/recycled it after getting home. so I would def recommend that. like food is compostable so that's no problem, but say a plastic to-go box for said food or plastic shampoo bottles in the hotel etc are all dumped in the water so we bought stuff like that back n then recycled. also be aware of hotels n resorts n other business doing "green washing". They'll say their bag is compostable or their to-go box is but really they are not n again they just dump it in the water so either avoid buying those or bring them back (rinsing them off works) n then recycling at home. I would recommend that if it's possible for you guys.

As someone who also cares very much about how kitchen counters look I think you need to have the books/pasta on either side of the subway tiles, and leave a little bit in the middle open and bare for your “workspace” area. Lol. Also I think the paper towels could def go on the other counter by the stove.

My overinvested thoughts: I like all the electronics in the corner. Get a mountable under-cabinet paper towel holder. Mount a magnetic strip to hang your knives instead of a knife block. Put the pasta next to the stove.
@paulinabriggs78452 жыл бұрын
Get another little shelf for cookbooks. Nothing next to mixer for ease of use. Fruit bowl under window (but sunlight might make some fruit ripen faster/go bad faster). Cake stand in storage unless there is cake/pastries. Glass soap dispensers are pretentious (but I guess I like the refillability of it).
