Thank you very profoundly for this beautiful video, Damo, which I was needing today. I have taken some notes for my future review and in case this is helpful to others: 0:00 - Anchoring the breath .... sometimes people miss that there are 3 parts: (1) muscular movement (diaphragm going down); (2) sinking of the breath /Qi and (3) sinking of the mind. The higher the mind, the higher the nervous system is strung (ie fight or flight), in which case the qi won't sink. 2:30 - The INTENTION of breathing low, actually raises the Qi! Even if the muscles go down, the qi stays high and the mind stays high. You can still be stressed, even after years of practicing abdominal breathing. 3:29 - The Daoist principle of Non-doing: ATTENTION (is nourishing) vs Intention (which can be forced, and contrived.) 4:18 - Apply unwavering and passive attention. 5:45 - Anchoring the breath is a process of unfolding and moving OUT OF fight or flight. 6:30 - Organize the "breath, mind and qi" and be at ease first, before doing stronger internal work, which can lead to being more stressed, rather than relaxed and at ease. 8:18 - This is not Vipassana; the aim here is to be able to anchor the breathing so it can evolve in the right direction. 9:30 - Give this a go: If you feel better afterwards, the post-anchoring-the-breath state should become your new norm, especially for one studying the internal arts. 10:35 - If you still feel tense afterwards, then you are practicing with intention, rather than with attention.

I can't express how grateful I am for this video. I applied this information for about 4 hours in one practice and unfolded more positive effects than 20 years of abdominal breathing incorrectly.

The way I understood the difference between intention and attention is that attention is feeling or sensing. Not to be confused with feelings which are mental interpretations of Feeling (singular). When we feel we contact someone or something other the self. And by attending or sensing we are learning to stay in the space between self and other. Attending to this space or rather the lack of it is the root cause of many psychological issues in many people today. Anchoring of the breath could be used as a powerful psychotherapeutic tool. I've just discovered your brilliant channel. Thank you for sharing. ❤️🙏👍🏻

I find breathing in ,with a perenium contraction , and breathing out with belly breathing and upward wavelike contratction ,naturally grounds the breath at right at the perenium , as well as raise kundalini , in an upward manner . :)

But you're using your intention instead of your attention. Don't force anything, just let everything unfold by itself while you passively pay attention

Thank you for this guidance. I am experiencing exactly what you describe. I am a self taught daily intense meditator, mystic and sage. My NS is taxed and am experiencing uncomfortable and unusual symptoms that are being uncovered by the onset of the gift of menopause. Any other guidance would be greatly appreciated. Is the breath anchored in the whole of the "shape" or solely in the region between the diaphragm and the pelvic floor? Thank you

How would one go about eliminating subconscious "intention" before starting to work with the breath? Every time I try to pay 'attention' to the breath it will either briefly get smoother and then break down, or immediately constrict. Then it is difficult to remove my attention from it and it gets more and more shallow and anxiety builds. When I try to "not change anything" I end up "trying to not change anything" and it becomes stressful. Any thoughts?

I’ve been a member of the online program for a few months and I definitely recognise this hurdle. What I learned by practicing is to start to just pay attention, notice the “trying to not try” without judging, and this noticing eventually caused this habit to subside. There’s another series of videos on this channel called “Hidden intention in Qigong” that really helped me make this distinction between attention and intention.

Hi Damo. Thank you for this video, everytime I re-explore basics, I always learn something new. I just want to add something regarding your most recent pod-cast on Buddha at the Gas Pump. It was very sensible the way there were no taboos and you didn't hold back in answering them as well as you knew. There's just one question, that should be have been asked, perhaps you will consider going into detail or perhaps just elaborating on it, if you don't know. It could just be a selfish personal wish, but I think there is value to it, and people in general will appreciate it. You went into some detail regarding psychedelics. To take it to the next level, have you every hear of black-opps/para-military MK-Ultra programs and there use of psychedelics to enhance something like neigong and "psionic" development? And the next thing is, how much might you be aware of regarding the connections between advanced neigong around on Earth, and these para-military/black-opps/Unacknowledged Special access black budget programs? Has there been any indication at all during your time/experience in this life, of any kind of connection? Advanced Masters having some involvement in them? People with Siddies being contacted out sought out by some of these shadowy organisations? Have you every been privy to any inside knowledge about it? Seen or witnessed anything peculiar in this regard? And of cause the grand finale, have you ever been privy to seen/heard or witnessed any connection between Earth Masters and people from other planets? Just my usual bs about that stuff. Apologies to prod you like that, but if your able to talk about any of it in a future video, it would be very timely and good Cheers Lars

Yes, he says so in his book. Advanced stages of breathing will relax the tissues and help expand the huang in a new way helping to shape the container.

This distinction between intention and attention has got to be very subtle, otherwise it would go against the observer effect. Interoception is a highly sensitive process, so I genuinely don't understand how you get from intention to attention. Other than having some sort of super human subtlety. It's a contradiction.
