Lou, I wish other videographers would take lessons from you on how to photograph a car. Your hand is steady, you give us money shots of the entire front, side, rear, interior and engine bay of the car and then zoom in on all the most important details. And you always finish with a shot of the proud owner standing next to his car for scale. No random flitting around, pointing at the ground or the sky or making us sick with unnecessary panning. No missing major details like the interior. And you ask intelligent questions of the owner too.

during WW2, Rolls Royce sent one of the prototypes of their "Merlin" engine to Packard. Packard sent it back after squeezing another 1000 horsepower out of it. Rolls Royce incorporated Packard's improvements, then licensed Packard to build them as well for the war effort. i'm betting Henry Ford couldn't have pulled off THAT one! as a machinist, i was born in the wrong era.... craftsmanship like this brings tears to my eyes wishing i could have worked with the men who made these amazing creations.

The 1930s Packards are some of the most beautiful and best engineered cars of the pre-WWII era. Great video and nice owner couple. The Packard engine bay is just as beautiful as the rest of the car. So great to see these classics restored and glad to hear he plans to drive it..........that's why it was built in the first place. 👍 Wonder if he (and three helpers) will ever put the top down. There is one major improvement with the power operated tops in the 50s and later. One person and one button and the top was up or down.

Some of the post-war Packards were good cars but they couldn't keep up with GM's lower priced, powerful V8s. We had a '53 Caribbean and I thought it had a solid feel that was hard to match.
@tomsriv5 жыл бұрын
Packard made a number of marketing mistakes, the first and foremost was trying to go down market and gain volume after the war when any car they built would have sold. They also couldn't compete down market with the economies of scale at the big 3. They also didn't have the styling of GM. Harley Earl at GM was one of the greatest artists of the 20th century and his designs kept GM in the front. No comparison in styling between a post war Cadillac and a Packard. Packard could compete with Lincoln and Imperial, but not Cadillac after the war.
@nobilesnovushomo585 жыл бұрын
The design of packard declined significantly. If you look at their designs you’ll see there’s a reason they went out of business besides overambition in restructuring

A 12 cylinder, dual side mount, jade green Packard touring car. Magnificent. I've heard the top on a convertible sedan is a mutha to put down and worse to put up. The "B" posts are removed by hand and then trying to get the boot on isn't easy either. By the time you're done it's turned winter and too cold to have the top lowered

A STRETCHER WOULD THEN FIT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE THE DOOR PILLAR WAS MOVABLE BY LOCKING IT TO THE REAR DOOR. THEY REP-LACED THE HEARSE WITH A 1947 CADILLAC WHICH WAS ALSO CONVERTIBLE TO AN AMBULANCE THEY ALSO BOUGHT A 1947 DESOTA LIMO WHICH HAD THE SAME SETUP AS THE PACKARD LIMO TO AN AMBULANCE. THE CADILLAC WAS A PROBLEM AS IT WOULD NEVER START SO THEY DID NOT USE IT AS AN AMBULANCE. IN FACT THEY TRADED IT FOR A 1949 BUICK HEARSE BY FLEXIBLE. THE DESOTA WAS LIKE THE PACKARDS GOOD FOR 10YRS.

I was surprised when the guy said he was going to drive it, amazing. Also, how do you decide which cars at shows you want to display?
@loucostabile8 жыл бұрын
This one will be a fun driver. I like cars, so how to pick cars for the channel is a great question. When at shows it's like a treasure hunt because you don't know what you'll see. That being said, I look for factory correct cars, I like restored cars back to factory, I like cars with interesting stories, well done high end modification cars (like the cars you'd see at World of Wheels), usually 2 door cars since their sporty, so I hope that answers your question. Thanks for asking, Lou

I believe Packard made v16s for PT boats......
@charlespotter75486 жыл бұрын
Also Packard built the engines for the P-51 "Mustang" aircraft.
@donf38775 жыл бұрын
Correct... sort-a. The PT engines actually started life as WW1 aircraft engines. They were so good (and powerful) they were selected for the PT's decades later. I believe the original PT's were 1,400 hp, but towards the end of the war they were putting out 2,000 hp. Three of those in a PT and it would fly!!! They were also used in the 'Miss America' series racing boats back before WW2. First one, then two then four of them. All in front of the driver with straight pipes so you can imagine the noise and fumes. And yes, at the same time Packard was also producing the Rolls Royce Merlin engines for the Mustang. Packard changed and streamlined the building of the Merlin and reduced the time to build them so much, Rolls Royce actually brought a team over here to see how to build their own engine!!!
